"For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness."
Rick Majors opened a drawer that he hadn’t touched in a very long time. He pulled out a box of candles. Why does he still have these? Why did he keep anything from that time? What was he thinking? What is he thinking right now?
“It’s okay,” he said to himself. “They’re just candles.”
He slowly pulled a single candle out of the box and placed it into a holder before shutting the rest back in the drawer where they belonged. In the darkness. Out of sight. Out of mind.
“It’s just one candle,” he thought. “People light candles all the time. Regular people. Stable people. Rational people. Lighting one candle doesn’t mean you’re in a cult.”
But that’s how it felt. He could almost hear Seromine’s voice as he lit the candle. He started to feel his presence in the room.
“It’s just one candle.”
Why was he doing this? Stupid question. The answer is obvious. It’s because of Michael Wryght. “Mr. Showtime” was back. And that was bad news for him. It was bad news because of the Black Hand.
Rick Majors hadn’t had too many run-ins with the group in his life and that’s probably why he's still in the business today. Crossing the Black Hand wasn't something that many did without serious consequences.
Very few can say they have had as dominant a reign as that group. They changed lives. They ended careers. They ruled with force and power. They were legitimately feared by everyone in the company.
But that isn’t why their possible return is bad news for Rick Majors. It’s bad news because they were a brotherhood.
Rick Majors has never been anyone’s best friend. That’s not to say he didn’t have friends. He did. He had good friends. He even had friends who he would consider his best friends. But the feeling was never mutual. People were fine with being around him socially until someone better came along. And then they moved on. That's the way it's been his whole life. And that’s the way it is with Grimm.
It’s strange to consider himself a friend of Grimm. Not only is Grimm is terrifying man who doesn’t exactly have an active social circle, but he’s also a man who Rick Majors doesn’t know very well. They don’t talk much. They spoke outside of Pure Class Arena exactly once when they had coffee. Grimm probably doesn’t even remember that day, but Rick Majors does. He remembers everything about it. It was the most social bonding he’s had with a member of this roster… unless you count the cult.
The cult.
The candle.
He lit it. He lit it. Why did he light it?
“It’s just a candle. People use them to relax all the time. So relax. Of course, most people probably don't use the same candles they used while worshiping a false god, but it’s not time to be picky.”
Michael Wryght is back. And he’s here to take Grimm away. The closest thing Rick Majors has to a partner – to a friend – in this company and he’s going to lose him. Just like he always loses his friends. And it’s Michael Wryght’s fault. He could have stayed away. He has a life outside of this business. Rick Majors doesn’t. Not anymore. But Michael Wryght had to come back. Mr. Showtime had to come back. He had to take this.
In different circumstances, Rick Majors could understand a guy coming back to this business looking for answers, looking for something... but not now. Not in these circumstances. Not when Michael Wryght's search for belonging will result in Rick Majors' devastation.
It would have been better if him and Gerard had killed each other in their match.
Living a Legacy was supposed to be Rick Majors’ spot. It was supposed to be the night where he finally brought the Genesis Title to the main event. But those two men – those two egos – had to steal it from him. Haven’t they taken enough? Pandæmonium did everything it could to destroy Rick Majors and Gerard Angelo isn’t stopping. He'll never stop. He wants to take everything that Rick has, even if it’s just the image of him raising the title as a pay-per-view ends.
“They’re both going to try and take everything from you, you know that, right?”
And the only one who can help him stop them is Grimm, a man who would rather raise a black glove with one of their opponents. Grimm can't be trusted. Not anymore.
This is not a good place to be, even for Rick Majors, who has rarely been in a good place. Will Grimm reach across the ring and extend his hand to his brother who seems to be down on his luck? Will Gerard Angelo kick Rick’s head off while he does it? At least in the ring it will be make sense. Whatever chaos, whatever treachery, whatever insanity happens, it will feel okay because it’s in a wrestling ring. That’s where madness happens.
Right now? In his home? With this candle? There’s telling what might be awakened.
"Forgive me, for I have sinned."
