You are Alok Deetoris A swift and noble ranger who protects the lands against all that would do them harm. You have been recruited by a local town of Grassville under threat from a being known only as Dopatonin. The stories tell of a man turned into a monster, who now roams the streets looking for victims. Upon capturing his prey, he uses some form of mind control and evil magic's to force them into becoming one of his demented followers. Others say he just manipulates and persuades those who are generally disillusioned with life anyway. Either way, folk from the town have gone missing and have been spotted as part of this cultists band of merry men. Which the town is not too fond of as they have to keep changing the ‘Population ****” sign’.
Dopatonin would be troublesome alone regardless of if he’s man or monster, thanks to his group of believers. But your task is made more dangerous by the hired mercenaries known as the ‘Absence of Light’. This band of thugs and bullies are well known across the region for the destruction they have laid in their wake, sometimes for no more reason than a glance they have taken exception from. The most dangerous and brutal is the leader of the clan, the Black Knight. Let not the title of knight confuse you, this woman has no honour to her fighting and will sooner rip someone in half than be bound by fair play.
To make matters even more difficult, a skeleton warrior has been seen in the vicinity of where Dopatonin’s hideout is believed to be. Nobody knows who rose this deadman from the grave in which he slept eternal, nor who his true allegiance lies. Is he with Dopatonin and the cult, or does he work on behalf of the Absence of Light. Nobody is sure of anything beyond he will be a threat, and he must be taken care of with the rest of them.
But worry not, for you do not undertake this quest alone. At your side is Tyrese Smithers the Barbarian. An ally of yours from many a year back, you two fell out over a difference of strategies. Where he wanted to charge in recklessly in his usual crazy rage and ‘wreck shit’. You instead wanted to take a more quick and stealthy approach. Since parting ways, the two of you have often competed for the same jobs across the region, further dissolving your partnership and building a rivalry in its place. But though you are no longer friends, you know you both will put aside your differences to ensure the success of this mission.
Tyrese also has some history with the Black Knight. Before the times when the Black Knight joined the Absence of Light (or was it formed, the stories are always vague on this detail), Tyrese and the Black Knight had joined up in a partnership. Tyrese enjoyed the destructive ‘no talk, more smash’ approach that the Black Knight herself employed, but eventually the ‘destroy everything’ mentality turned on him as well, and the Black Knight brutally left Tyrese in a state near death. Now fully recovered, he intends to exact his revenge on the Black Knight, and make sure her group of mercenaries never bother anybody ever again. You will stand by his side to ensure he can get his revenge on this day.
Joining your party, or perhaps you are joining her, is a water mage from the Riverlands. Briné Groundswell is a mystery to you, your paths having not crossed before today. But you have heard tales of how she ones was caught up in Dopatonin’s schemes before. During his early days, while he was still building his forces, he tried to recruit a fellow mage of Briné’s, one who draws power from the very stars themselves, Kalista. Both managed to escape that ordeal, but Briné was not one to let a being like that get away with whatever he chooses to, and upon learning that he had set up a compound and was plaguing the good folk of Grassville, she has travelled here to destroy the demon, be he beast or man. You will stand by her side and make sure the job is done.
The Manipulator, the Destroyer and the Undead. But these three warriors in your way would make a challenge, but they have followers and acolytes, subordinates and enthralled beings who will help them fight. You are but a party of 3, with no guarantee of help. But fight on you must, and fight on you will. For the side of justice, revenge and hope are your allies for this battle, and they will serve you well against the Brain, the Brawn and the Bon… Well, you get the idea.
So yeah, as it turns out my girlfriend happens to be big into table top roll playing games and she’s recently found a group of people to play with. And in an effort for more things to do together, she’s dragged me along to these things as well. It was slightly tricky to arrange a few hours out of the house together when I’ve now got a minor dependant living under my roof, but then we realised she’s fourteen, that’s old enough to babysit. So we stick her looking after the 2Guys for a few hours and go roll a dice in a land of swords and sorcery!
And I do admit it is a lot of fun. Its such a shame that this kind of activity had a negative view of being a ‘geeky’ or ‘nerdy’ pastime only. Which ignoring that it’s now the age of the geek, seems rather a strange view point when you look at it. I mean you have a bunch of people who generally meet up in a real world setting and socialise with each other while playing a game of co-operation, creativity and critical thinking. If that’s considered nerdy then I’ll take a nerd card cause those are some pretty awesome life skills.
And I mean, when you really look at it, anybody who’s into any kind of subject could be considered a ‘nerd’. If your deep into your football (of either side of the Atlantic's definition), or any sport for that matter, then you could be a sports nerd. Just because that one seems to have been socially acceptable for the last several decades does not actually make it any less true.
Anyway, I am way off topic. Actually I’m not 100% sure I had a topic to begin with? Oh yeah, table top roll playing. For those wondering I play a healer character. It was Becks’ idea, apparently I spend far too much of my time beating people up to do it in a fictional setting.
But hey, at least that’s a skill I happen to be proficient in right? What would you say, +5 bonus?
