"So, here's the story of how I got struck by lightning on the Saco river.
We had all been there a few hours and had tied on a good buzz. The weather was weird, it would rain for half an hour then be sunny, rinse and repeat. Four people were late getting to camp though, and two of them showed up without the others. Apparently floating down the Saco river in a raft of pool noodles isn't the smartest idea.
The weather had just started to get bad too, so some of us convinced Clifford to use his boat with a motor to go find the girls who were far behind. The second he left on the boat it started torrential downpouring. I remember watching the wind pick up and start whipping the water across the river; it was getting really, really bad. Then it started to hail a few seconds later. Jamie ran down onto the beach to grab a piece of hail to show us.
Then a split second later I was on the ground, the air had a reddish tint to it, and there was an loud BOOM. I was really pissed off, because I had assumed someone lit off the cannon (this thing out friends built that just makes a really, really loud boom) behind me. So I get up yelling "WHAT THE FUCK?!?!" But then I noticed that everyone was freaking out and running around, and asking if that was lightning. A bolt had struck a tree ten feet from where we were standing.
The bolt passed through the tree, probably into the roots, and traveled to where me and another girl were standing/sitting in different places, and took us both off our feet.
I didn't really understand I was hit at first though, and everyone was freaking out about finding the dogs. One had ran off when the lightning had hit. It came back fairly quickly, and that's when started to notice that my feet were numb and the sensation was growing. I went into my tent and tried to relax a little, but then my hands went numb and my breathing got really erratic. It took a little bit, I think half of it could have been anxiety because we had just sent cliff off in a metal boat in that shitstorm to rescue people. He came back with them though, so that's all good.
The numbness and tingling went away within 20 minutes or so and I basically went back to normal, besides being pretty shook up. Needless to say, that was one of the craziest things i've ever experienced. I got struck by lightning and survived!"
So yeah. Evening lightning can't kill me.
