It’s 3am on Sunday night. Is this the best time to reach those who need to hear a message of salvation and redemption? Perhaps. Anyone who is awake at this hour is likely having trouble sleeping. Perhaps they are worried about paying the bills and making ends meet. Maybe they are addicted to drugs or alcohol and are up now because sleep will not come to them. A person watching at this time might even work several jobs, struggling every day to put food on the table for their children. Or maybe the viewer could be that a person battling with some personal demons. Or it could just be that this timeslot, on this channel, is the most affordable option.
Either way, it begins at 3am with a notice that “THE FOLLOWING IS A PAID ANNOUNCEMENT.” After a brief moment, the scene changes to a dark room, lit by candlelight. Standing in the room is Gabriel.
“Welcome, my brothers and sisters,” he says.
“This is a new venture for us, coming to you on television. Yes, I know this choice of medium is not ideal. At this very moment, just a few channels over, I am sure that you can find gratuitous sex and unnecessary violence. You find sin far too easily these days. It is available much too readily in the world. This fills me with sadness, my brothers and sisters. It just about makes me weak. But I continue. I do so because of you. Because your prayers fill me with hope. And because I know the Lord is on my side.
And yet sin is all around us. That is the reason for my statement today. That is why I am speaking with you tonight. I need to amplify my message. It has become painfully obvious that many people today do not understand sin. They do not recognize that their actions are going against the words of the Lord. Case in point, my brothers and sisters, the recent actions of Loki, Kyle Shane, and Dominator. These men have all stolen from me. They have stolen my accomplishments. They have stolen my awards. They have stolen my titles. This is disgraceful. This is disgusting. And this will not stand.
Do you not recognize that you are spitting in the face of the Lord when you sin? Or do you not care?”
Gabriel briefly looks down.
“Our world is a cesspool. And it gets worse and worse every day. Destruction and death and sadness and despair. Some of us wade through this filth every day, trying to ignore it or cope with it or pretend that it’s not there. And that’s understandable. The level of hopelessness in this world can sometimes feel overwhelming. It almost feels comfortable to put your head down, keep your gaze straight ahead, and plow through it all as if it’s nothing. I get that. My brothers and sisters, that is once how I lived my life.”
Gabriel looks down again.
“And then there are those who get upset about it. They feel angry or depressed. They feel scared or vindictive. They lash out at a world that has been cruel to them. This I also understand. I have also been there. This is the attitude that almost cost me everything in my life.”
Another pause.
“Some try to help. They give to charity. They volunteer. They bring cookies to the office. They think that they’re brightening up the world a little each day. But they’re not. There is no way that these small and simple acts can counter the great Satan than we are all struggling against. While these people may have good intentions, they are failing.”
Gabriel looks up now, to the sky.
“And then there are those who look to the Lord. They recognize that only He can guide us. They know that, in the battle against evil, only He represents good. He is everything right in the world. He is kind and pure and virtuous. If you side with the Lord, then you have hope. You can defeat evil. You can overcome sin. That is what I have done, my brothers and sisters, and that is what I will continue to do. This is the only true way to battle evil and to destroy sin.”
Gabriel looks into the camera.
“Dominator, you have sinned. You have stolen from me. You walk with that Underground Title as if you believe you actually earned it. But you have not. Yes, you threw garbage at some other competitors for a few weeks, but that does not make you champion. Defeating me, the real champion, is the only way to earn that title. And you will not do that. You cannot do that. Because, like Kyle Shane, you are a sinner. You are a heathen. And you will fail because you do not have the power of the Lord on your side.
Praise Seromine. Praise the Lord.”
With that, the program comes to a close. After a brief moment, the screen is filled with another “THE FOLLOWING IS A PAID ANNOUNCEMENT” notice and we’re told all about how a new mop will change our lives. If you buy that mop today, you also get a knife that can cut through a pipe and still slice a tomato, for some reason. But quantities are limited.
