CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) -- Former Pure Class Wrestling North American Champion and Superstar, Johnny Matthews, was found unresponsive on his locker room floor earlier this evening. His wife, Stace, found him lying on the floor after a match, and when first responders arrived on the scene, he had stopped breathing while in her arms.
He had been touring local promotions around the U.S. in support of his farewell tour for the last year, and had started to wrap up his final appearances in Texas when his health failed him, and what is being reported as a heart attack, took his life. While a habitual drinker and smoker in the past, he had cleaned himself up for his last ride, but years of stress coupled with substance abuse were too much to combat along with the physical demands of his work and schedule.
Neihter Stace, nor his brother-in-law and sister, Justin and Lindsay Michaels, could not be reached for comments. It was reported, however, that Johnny (41), will be remembered later next week in Corpus Christi in a small gathering of close friends and family.
