The sky spilled out above them, but it remained blank and nearly empty. The street lights caused all but the brightest stars to disappear tonight, and although that made watching the night sky quite boring, they didn't mind. Not as long as they had each others company for the night anyways. Pegasus had taken notice of it. It started off with her being his obsession, something he had to learn more about. So he got closer... and now he was starting to feel too close. He had grown to like her being around, her energetic personality always brightened up the day, and although they'd only been around each other for a few short weeks, he was afraid he was losing sight of his original intentions with her.
He'd just planned on getting close enough to her to understand why she robbed him. Maybe to help her out, get her away from the life of crime that she was in. All he has done though, was found himself closer and closer to her everyday, and his true goal seemed to be slipping farther and farther away. It didn't help when she leaned towards him and placed her head upon his shoulder, and then she hooked an arm through his. His heart skipped a beat. What was this... things weren't supposed to go this way, not this way at all.
Soooo... tell me what it's like.
He turned his attention from the bland view overhead and placed it on her. Her hair was a light gold, and it's medium length strands trailed over his shoulder blade and down his back just a bit. He wanted to touch it, to slide his fingers through it, but he resisted the urge to. No, she wasn't something he could ever have. He was just here to help, and that was it. Right?
Tell you about what?
Those blue eyes found his as she tilted her head a bit to see his face. He wanted to turn away, to stare back up into the darkness... but her eyes held him.
About what? {She said it sarcastically, chuckling a little after she did.} Seriously though, tell me what it's like to be a superstar.
He still didn't understand the question. He viewed a superstar as someone with money, someone with fame, and he had neither. He never had a fortune, and he never would amass one in his lifetime... unless he played the lottery... and was very lucky. And as for fame... well, he wasn't exactly in the spotlight... maybe aiming the spotlight on the true superstars, but he certainly wasn't one himself.
I wouldn't know. {He used an indifferent tone, not really sure how she'd react to him.} I've never been one.
She nudged him with her elbow playfully, and then quickly hugged his arm to let him know she was kidding just to be safe. Her eyes still stared into his, and he found it hard to blink now. He knew he couldn't stop himself from looking anymore, and so he just gave in...
Oh come on Jonathan! {Her voice was uplifting and calming, but also coercive sounding at the same time.} I've found myself on the PCW website the company puts up. I've also read through the things they say about you. I mean, you've held all the titles, and you are the only wrestler that has lasted since day one, I'd say that is superstar status.
He knew she was trying to help him, but it wouldn't matter. He'd had his mind made up a long time ago about what he was, who he was. He did like it though, the attention. Only a few people have ever really given him that, and all except her are gone from his life. It was nice to have it back, it was nice to have her.
Sadly, I haven't held every title. {He turned his head away from her and stared off at the tops of other buildings, and although he tried his best to remain calm, he couldn't help but feel a surge of self-disgust come up as he said his next words.} And the titles that I have held, I've also lost. It's sort of a double-edged sword in a way. I won them at one point, but I've also lost them. Every one of them.
His words seemed to unnerve her and she slowly moved her eyes off of him. First to the tops of the buildings that his gaze led to, and then up at the night sky again. It was dead silent now, and no sounds from the street made it to the hotel rooftop where they currently sat nestled together. The only thing that broke the relative silence was their breathing, almost in tandem it seemed. She was the one that finally broke the silence that had taken root.
Ya know... {She paused a moment... a long unsettling moment.} Ya know, nothing lasts forever.
Her head turned towards him, a slight smile on her face. It slowly disappeared as he continued to look at the rooftops of buildings across the street ignoring her for the moment. He slowly brought his legs up to his chest and laid his chin on his knees, and then tilted his head towards her.
No...{He sighed as he watched her}.. No, I suppose you're right. Nothing does last forever. Heh... Nothing Gold Can Stay...
The quizzical look in her eyes told him all he needed to know, but she went on to say it anyways.
What?
He was the one that smiled this time, and he even chuckled a little.
Heh, Nothing Gold Can Stay is a poem. It was written by... {He squinted his face and rubbed his head with his free arm as if doing so would help him remember the name} Frost... I think. Robert Frost... yea, that sounds right.
She snuggled in closer to him, again giving his arm a squeeze.
Could you tell it to me? She cooed out the words, and then went back to using her secret weapon... her blue eyes. Even now they sparkled so lively, so perfect as they looked Pegasus over. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?
How could anyone resist that? Pegasus couldn't, so he again squinted his face, and sure enough the words just seemed to flow through his mouth.
Nature's first green is gold, her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower, but only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf, so Eden sank to grief. So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.
Nothing was said for a bit after he finished reciting the poem. He just stared at her, and she at him. He knew he shouldn't though, he just couldn't. So he turned his head back towards the sky. He saw that the stars were starting to be replaced by clouds as they swept across overhead. She too turned her head up to watch as the last star they could see was swallowed up by the clouds.
It was beautiful.{She looked at him again, a smile back on her face.}The poem I mean. I really liked it.
He nodded in agreement with her, but never took his eyes off the sky. There was nothing to be seen anymore, but he knew that if he were to look anywhere else, it would be at her. It was something that he wanted to refrain from doing, as much as possible. He also knew that one of these times his eyes did fall upon her, he would never take them off again. It was something he couldn't have.
Can I ask you a question Jonathan?
Shoot.
I read about your life before wrestling... is it true? Is it true that your mother was shot? Or is that all a part of Pegasus?
His eyes fell from the sky as she asked, this was clearly something he had not expected. He didn't know how to respond, he had no idea of what to say. So he stood up and left her sitting there, her eyes watching his back as he walked a few feet away. He stopped walking and then ran one hand through his hair, stopping mid-way through, gripping at it even. He let go and his head fell forward to stare at his feet.. and still nothing was said.
I don't know anything about my mother. {He remained with his back facing her, his head still looking at the loose gravel that littered the roof that laid beneath his feet. A hint of anger hung with each word as he muttered them out.} She left me when I was only a few weeks old, or that's what I've been told. Abandoned, forgotten, never forgiven her for it. And I never will. {His voice calmed now, and he lifted up his head to stare off into the night and remember...} The angel you speak of though, is the lady that raised me. The sweetest person you could ever hope to meet in your life, and to this day I have yet to meet a person as un-selfish as her. But that was no story made by PCW to enhance my character, nor was it done to make people sympathize with me. She was shot, and she did die in my arms.
Rain drops began to slowly fall from above, but it was nothing more than a sprinkle. Even if it was a downpour though, neither of the two souls that occupied the hotel roof at this moment would have moved an inch. Pegasus was caught up in his memories, and Melissa was so fascinated by this new side of him she was seeing that she had barely even noticed the drops that plopped down upon her body.
I held her as the life slowly bled out of her. And I could do nothing but watch and pray to God that she would be ok. She died within minutes... perhaps even seconds, and I could do nothing. {He quickly brought a hand up to his eye to dispose of a tear before it ran down his face. Had he looked over at her, he would have seen that Melissa had done the same.} The police did nothing afterwards. They found no evidence to point to anyone, no one could identify the shooters, or were too afraid to anyways. They sat back and twiddled their fingers, and pushed their laws upon me when I attempted to take matters into my own hands.
The rain was starting to pick up, but neither made an effort to escape it. It pelted them with an ever increasing onslaught of drops, and the wind had picked up a slight bit which made the rain sting into them from angles now. Melissa raised her hand to her face to try to keep the rain out of it. Pegasus, with his back still towards her, made no effort to stop the droplets as they bombarded the side of his face. A small flash of lightning lit the sky, and thunder followed soon after.
It's why I hate this life, my life.{His clenched his fists at his sides} No matter what I do as Jonathan Nordby, no matter what I say, it will never matter to anyone. I will never be able to accomplish anything as a nobody. I will never save anybody as Jonathan Nordby. Atleast with Pegasus... atleast then my word gets out to the public, and maybe my actions will lead people down the right path. I couldn't even save Agatha as Jonathan Norby, how pathetic is that?
And that's just who I am. Pathetic. In this life, I will never accomplish anything, and my life will be an average one filled with nothing more than mediocrity. I'll just be lost into the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and then ultimately, forgotten. Pegasus... he's somebody, and he's making a name for himself every night he steps foot in that ring, whether it's a win or loss. His name is on the tips of people's tongues, and while it may not be widespread recognition, it's better than what I am. A nobody, a pathetic loser hoping to fulfill an empty promise he made eight years ago.
He ran another hand through his hair causing the water that had collected to drip down onto his neck and travel down his back. He didn't notice though, his clothes were already soaked through from the rain. He opened his mouth to say something else, but nothing more came out. He sighed and lowered his head to watch as he dragged one of his feet over the gravel below. The sound of her feet drew near, and while raised his head up, he didn't turn towards her. She stopped beside him, and he could feel her eyes staring into him, begging him to look at her. He wouldn't.
She opened her mouth to speak but only a muffled sound came out. She had nothing to say that could make him feel better, nor to make herself feel better either. So she stood mere inches away, words dancing on her tongue, but none were worth spitting out. Even this close to him, she felt that he was so far away, too far away to touch. And that was when she knew what she had to do.
Jonathan... I... I have...{She bit her lip, the words coming to her mind much harder to actually say than they were to think of} I have to tell you something...
Her words didn't move him one bit, and he continued to stare straight out ahead. She bit her lip again and reached towards him with her hand. Her fingerstips slowly pressed onto his upper arm as it rested by his side, and after he showed no reaction to her touch, she slowly placed the rest of her arm on it. She didn't know why she did it, but she felt even more compelled to tell him the truth now.
Now... I don't want you to be mad at me for what I'm about to say, so please just stay and listen to all of it. I haven't been entirely honest to you about things. In fact, I had seen you even before you ran into me about a month ago, two weeks before actually. I... I was actually the person that robbed you Jonathan.
She gave his arm a small squeeze, but he didn't move... he didn't react... he did nothing but blink and breath. It scared her in a way, like he wasn't listening, but it also calmed her because he wasn't freaking out over what had happened... yet. She still had more things to say though.
When you ran into me on the street, I really thought you knew who I was, and that you were going to turn me in or something. But then you offered to walk me home, and gave me a ticket to go watch you wrestle and everything... I mean, I was shocked it all happened so fast, but the more I thought about what you were giving me, the more I couldn't turn it down. I mean, wrestling arenas are so crowded, so busy, like anyone would notice someone perhaps grabbing a wallet or purse. And you... I mean, you seemed like the perfect mark, so oblivious to things and all.
She sighed and tilted her head forward causing strands of her hair to fall in front of her face. She was disappointed that she was spilling all of this out to him, but he wasn't even giving her a shrug or a sigh or anything. She'd even take a slap to the face right now just for him to prove that he is listening. Just... anything...
I... don't know why it happened, or when it happened... but I really did start to like you though. I was no longer looking to make money off of you, I was looking to be with you, to see your smile, to hear your voice... just... all of you. And I understand that by me telling you all of this, that you will probably no longer want to see me. But I felt you should know the truth about me, and even if I lose what could have been for it, atleast I let you know the truth.
The tears that rolled down her face mixed with the rain before they began their fall to their feet. She cried for two reasons now, the immediate one being that she felt the relationship falling through her hands and splashing to the ground like the rain drops that fell down around them. The second was that even with him right next to her, she still felt alone right now. He made no effort to comfort her, no attempt to stop her tears from flowing. She was alone, holding his arm and now leaning her forehead into his shoulder, and yet, still alone.
No need to feel bad, as I haven't been entirely truthful with you either.{He did his best to make his voice calming, but he made no other efforts to help her} I knew who you were before I ran into you that day. I also knew you were the one that robbed me. I didn't go looking for revenge if that is what is seems like. I just wanted to know why you were doing these things, and I was hoping I could help. Be able to do some good as Jonathan in this world, instead of relying on Pegasus to do it for me. I saw you as maybe being that person I could help.
It hasn't gone the way I thought it would though. I had hoped I could get you to tell me the truth weeks ago, but you never cracked. So I got closer and closer to you, and here I stand now. Too reluctant to leave you, and too stubborn to admit that I care for you. Things weren't supposed to go this way, not this way at all.
She looked up at him, and he looked back. Her light blue eyes still surrounded by tears, and his deep green eyes still fighting them back as best as they can. She leaned towards him, her eyes closed and her lips slightly pressed together... a kiss. He couldn't though, he knew it wasn't right. It isn't right, it isn't right, it isn't right,
It isn't right.
He turned his head away from her, into the rain. He knew it was wrong though, it just had to be wrong. Her soft hand slid along the side of his face, and then slowly pulled it back to facing her. Her eyes begged him, her voice pleading...
Please...
Her mouth came closer to his, and this time he didn't pull away. Their lips met for the first time, and although he thought it was wrong, he couldn't help but wonder why it felt so good. His arms slowly wrapped around her and her arms did the same. The rain continued to fall, and the sky filled with lightning overhead silhouetting them in their embrace. Thunder sounded out an instant later, but still they remained, arms still entwined, lips still pressed together. It was then that he knew it was right, it was good, it was meant to be...
