Most will only know or remember Lawler as the loudmouth mega-heel commentator who'd occasionally tussle with wrestlers, such as Bret Hart. But Lawler was, especially in his hometown of Memphis, insanely over. Like, fuckin' insanely over. He's the only regional wrestler I can think of that got mainstream press when he appeared on Letterman via his feud with Andy Kaufman.
But Ricky Steamboat is probably the only wrestler ever to never turn heel and continue to be over with the fans, no matter the feud or the positioning on the card. I have to give the nod to The Dragon.
Fun note: Both these guys tore it down with Randy Savage.

I'm glad you cleared that up. I was wondering if Steamboat had ever been a heel, because I always remember him as being a good guy. But that answers the question. I give the nod to Steamboat, also. His match with Savage at WM3 is probably my favorite match of all time, and he had some great matches with Flair, too.
