"Welcome back to Mike in the Morning on K102, 102.4 The Fan. As always, I'm your host, Michael Hunter along with my partner Alex Horn. If you're just joining us, then you're doing it wrong. We've been discussing the upcoming Pure Class Wrestling Super Show, Return to Glory. This is the sixth time they've put on this show and it continues to be one of PCW's biggest shows."
"I couldn't agree more, Mike. All of the Super Cards they put out are top notch, but they always seem to push the envelope."
"So we've been going over the matches and giving our opinions and picks, but this next one has me really excited."
"Oh, isn't it the.."
"Yeah, the Buried Alive match between Loki and Grimm. Now you know, and I know, but not everyone knows, is that I've been a huge fan of both of these guys since they debuted forever ago. Grimm has always been a constant; he's like... like… something that's constant. Yeah, I got nothing for that."
Alex laughs, "I know what you mean though. He's always been this scary almost supernatural force in PCW. I don't think he's been gone for more than a show or two during his entire run with the company."
"Loki on the other hand is pretty much the antithesis to Grimm. They're both legends in the business; but where Grimm is slow and steady, Loki is kind of flakey. He's taken more time off from the company than any active superstar but he still finds ways to make himself relevant."
"Only kind of flakey?"
"Okay, very flakey. But you can't deny he's entertaining in the ring, especially when he's facing someone like Grimm."
"He didn't do so well in their last match did he?"
"If by not do well you mean he didn't win, then yeah, he didn't do well. But there's more to wrestling than just winning. He certainly didn't let Grimm walk out unscathed."
"Not to mention they changed the match in the middle of it."
"That's right, they did. It went from being a singles match to a no DQ match and something like that really favors Grimm more so than Loki."
"Favors Grimm? How do you figure that, they're practically the same size?"
"I was thinking more along the lines of styles, Loki moved away from that brawling style a while ago into more of a hold based technical style. Grimm on the other hand is a wild man in the ring, he's not afraid to hurt himself in order to hurt his opponent."
"That's right; I completely forgot that Loki used to be a brawler. Wasn't he taller back then too?"
"You know, I thought so too. Chalk it up to getting older I guess."
"Chalk what up, him shrinking or us not being able to discern height?"
"Take your pick. But we're getting off topic. So these two beat the hell out of each other at Living A Legacy and now they're doing it again at Return to Glory. Only this time they've definitely upped the ante. They're going at it in a Buried Alive match."
"Have they ever had one of those?"
"You know, I don't actually know. I think this is the first one. Though I'm sure someone will call, tweet, or email and tell us how wrong we are in about five seconds. But while we're waiting for that, give me your Pros and Cons on Loki."
"Hmm, let me think. Well first off you've got experience in, we'll call them 'alternative' match types; at least by PCW standards. Overall Grimm is the more experienced wrestler and an artist in the ladder match. But beyond that I think, and I could be wrong, I think the only other alternative match he's had in PCW has been a single Pain of Glass match; a match that Loki was supposed to have competed in as well, actually. Loki's actually been in two Pain of Glass matches, a war games match, and at least one ladder match. Not to mention cage matches, battle royals, and you get the idea."
"So would you say that Loki is just better at taking pain than Grimm?"
"You know, I think I would. We've seen Loki get absolutely brutalized and still pull off the win. I'm struggling to remember a time when Grimm was ever brutalized. He's lost matches, certainly, but aside from one match, maybe two, I can't think of a time when I watched a Grimm match and thought, 'his career is over after this.'"
"So point number one for Loki; better at getting beaten up."
Alex laughs, "I think I'd have phrased it differently, but essentially, yes. Point number two, he lost his last match."
"That's a good thing? You're going to have to explain that one to me."
"No one wants to lose, let alone twice in a row. Loki knows that Grimm has his number so he's going to come out swinging. I don't think this one is going to go to a judge's decision but it's certainly not going to be over quicker; which actually leads me into point number three."
"Did you just mix a boxing metaphor in with my professional wrestling?"
"I most certainly did, but back to point number three. Longer matches kind of favor Loki's style; the more he and Grimm wear each other out the slower that match is going to get, which favors that technical style over Grimm's, what does he call it, the science of eight limbs. It sounds fancy and all martial artsy, but it's still a brawling, striking style. That takes a lot out of you."
"So the good points about Loki, to summarize; he's better at taking the kind of punishment a match like this dishes out, he's got more of a reason to win, and his style is better suited for a longer match. Does that sound about right?"
"Absolutely."
"Okay, what about the bad points? What has Loki got working against him in this match?"
"He hasn't really been the same since he came back. He pulled off an amazing win in the Last Chance Battle Royal and then just kind of… did nothing. I don't think he's won a match since then. I think it's safe to say that he's lost a step."
"You know, I am going to disagree with that one. I think, I hope, that it's not the fact that he's lost a step, but more the fact that competition in PCW has just become that much stiffer. We've seen some of the greatest matches in the last couple of years, a good portion of that that Loki was absent for. So I think it's not so much losing a step as just really prolonged ring rust."
"That's fair. So let's call point one for the Cons losing a step AND ring rust."
"I can live with that. Okay so what would you say point number two is."
"Say hello to Grimm's little friend. Loki has never really used weapons in his matches so a match that is kind of weapon-centric puts him at a disadvantage. We've already seen the kind of damage that shovel can do and you just know that it's going to be used for more than just dumping dirt on an opponent."
"I think it's safe to say that most of the fans are looking forward to the shovel being introduced to someone's head. And I'm not immune to it either; I definitely want to see it used effectively. So what's the next con-point?"
"That would be the Black Hand. Grimm has friends, Loki doesn't. You've got to believe that they'll make their presence felt as soon as one of their number starts to lose the advantage. That's kind of the whole point of a stable."
"You really think they'll get involved?"
"They're only the most powerful stable since Marshall's Law. So yeah, I think they'll get involved. I would be very surprised if they didn't. They've already shown a propensity for getting involved where they aren't welcomed. Stormm interfered in the last Loki Grimm match, just to highlight recent events."
"What? No he didn't, he just came out onto the ramp."
"Which in turn caused a distraction. Now granted it distracted Grimm, but seeing as Stormm is apparently sipping the Black Hand Kool-Aid it counts. But yeah, Grimm has friends to bring to the party, Loki doesn't. I don't see anyone coming to the rescue if things start to go bad for Loki."
"So Pros and Cons for Grimm?"
"Just reverse what I said about Loki and you've got it. These two are so closely matches it's ridiculous."
"Okay so we have a fan weighing in on the match. @rycklyfe writes, 'Grimm is overrated, Loki can totally beat him.' So we have one person pulling for Loki, what about you, Alex? Who do you see winning this match?"
"It's always nice to have a fan, but I'm still putting that together, you go first. Who do you see winning this thing?"
"I have to go with Grimm."
"Really, you think Grimm will win?"
"I do, and here's why. At the end of the day, Grimm is just more brutal in the ring. I called him a wild man earlier, or one of us did, and I can't really think of a better description of Phinehas Grimm. I don't think he's going to escape this thing unscathed by any means, but I think he's willing to put more on the line than Loki is. Especially when you consider that there really isn't anything on the line to begin with. There's no title being decided, no number one contender-ship. Just two guys trying to kill each other, maybe trying to end a career. And for that reason, I don't see Loki going all in. So yeah, I'm going to give this one to Grimm. How about you, you got your thoughts all jotted down?"
"Yeah, I think I'm ready now. Now you know I'm a big fan of both of these guys, and while I really think it could go either way, that's not the point of this. If I have to pick a winner, I pick Loki."
"Just to disagree with me?"
"Just to disagree with you. No, I really do have a reason for it. Loki has nothing left to lose, nothing left to prove either. When nothing is on the line that’s the perfect time to cut loose. He's not trying to be the face of PCW anymore, he's won every major title, so why not go out with a bang? Go out with a hell of a win in a match that looks like it was set up to beat him."
"So one vote for Grimm, and one vote for Loki. Looks like we're split on this."
"Yeah, we're going to have to agree to disagree on this match."
"Fair enough, so moving up the card….."
"I couldn't agree more, Mike. All of the Super Cards they put out are top notch, but they always seem to push the envelope."
