No one saw it coming. There’s no shame in admitting when the best days are long gone. No guilt in accepting that it wasn’t working out the way one hoped. The man I called brother. The man my children called Uncle. For over a decade, we were Tha UnHoly Alliance. A team that stood the test of time, beat back all challengers, and captured tag team gold two times. For eleven years we were unstoppable. Undefeated. Menaces to our employers.
I thought the team and my career was dead three years ago. But I was wrong. It became water under the bridge. I agreed to return for another chance at tag glory. I even agreed to accept the fans into my life…like one would…well. Let’s not go there. The dream was alive and well. PCW had resurrected the tag team division, and was in need of teams to make it flourish.
We didn’t flourish. Floundered would be more appropriate. Failed would be even better. The difference was I took the blindfold off and saw the truth. The reality. The motherfucking light. We tried to recapture something and lost the gamble. It happens. He got pinned in every loss taken, or in the case of Deadly Intentions, a phony look-a-like did the honors. The record book doesn’t lie and it doesn’t exclude me from sharing the misfortune. We won as a team. We lost as a team. Only after this time, I went straight for the heart. The chase failed. We failed. The time came to do what I had to do, what I agreed to do. What I promised to do.
So I did. I’m not proud of it, but what’s done is done. He can have the PCWfans unfaithful. Let them rally behind whatever he does moving forward. But the cheers, cheers, cheers. The chants of AN-AR-CHY! AN-AR-CHY AN-AR-CHY!...snakes, the whole lot of em’. They’re all snakes and that reception was poison in my veins. The promise I made saved me. The promise I made woke me up. The promise I made was delivered like an anniversary gift.
Willard glanced over his letter. The thoughts. The words spilled through the ink and onto paper. His train of thought was clear with each stroke of penmanship. The Anarchist hadn’t given it a second look until now. Casa de Willard was in the process of being packed up and moved. The family was saying goodbye to the only home they ever knew.
Kristen was understandably upset over it (and something else). Autumn was sad, but also curious about where they were going. The twins didn’t care. Jason and Destiny were elated. They had decided it was time to start new. It was all just a matter of getting in the car and driving away. That process would soon be underway.
The happily married couple was sitting inside of what was their bedroom. Between them sat a small container of water and an old silver candlestick. A fragrance candle had been placed inside. The scent of vanilla filled the room of children conceived, as it’s flame burned bright. Jason continued reading his letter. Destiny sat patiently, a smile on her face as she gazed at her husband. She was proud of his actions and it radiated. The only time her eyes diverted was when she would read the letter herself, or when one of the children wandered in.
”Burn it.”
Destiny took the letter and gave it a quick look. Jason watched as she held it to the flame, grinning as it started to turn charcoal black. Had a bag of marshmallows been on standby, its safe to assume they would’ve been toasted with it. She stared at the burning document, deriving some type of therapy from it, he assumed. She would allow it to burn three-fourths of the way and then douse it out in the water.
”The time had come to do the right thing. To turn that last page and close the book.” Willard calmly spoke.
Destiny smiles as her husband reaches over and takes her by the hands.
”Our plan worked. You have given me everything I’ve ever asked for” Destiny squeezed his hands and blew out the candle. “We only need each other, babe.”
Jason nodded, ”No one understands that. They only see you as my wife. The mother of our children. They don’t understand you. Me. Us. How foolish of them. How selfish.”
Destiny releases his hands and moves the candlestick aside so she can scoot closer. His arms immediately wrapping themselves around her like a blanket in winter.
”They’ll learn the hard way then. I have always been with you. We have been through everything together. You lost your way. Forgot who you truly were.”
”You know me better than anyone on this planet. You’re my voice of reason.”
”Duh. I always have been.”
Willard laughed. Destiny relaxed in his arms while she traced circles around the back of his hands, humming in the process. What neither had realized was that Kristen heard everything they were saying. She was standing just outside the room, watching her parents talk about the matter like it was an ordinary event.
”Dad!”
Jason turned his head towards her.
”Your best friend is missing!”
News must have driven down the I-5 to reach the ears of the eldest offspring. Jason and Destiny showed no emotion whatsoever to it. Kristen repeated it a second time. Jason looked confused by her words as he looked at his wife.
”No she isn’t. Your mom is right here.”
”I was talking about…”
Jason knew the name she was about to say. He promptly cut her off from being able to do so. It didn’t matter. For the young fourteen year old, she was going to be heard one way or another. She said his name, and it drew her father’s ire.
”And I was talking about the woman who gave you life!”
”And who is capable of taking it away…”
She got a response from mom that time. It wasn’t meant as “I’ll kill you” but more like “I can take away everything you enjoy.” Kristen rolled her eyes and scoffed. “If I were you Kristen Leigh…” Destiny pulled away from Jason and stood up, wasting no time in approaching her daughter. “I’d tread carefully. The thin ice you’re skating on is about to break.”
Kristen glared at her. Then at her dad, almost looking for help in the matter. She wasn’t going to get any, and knew at that moment that things had drastically changed. Her parents sounded, looked, and felt like different people than she knew them to be. This was serious. It felt wrong, and she was unable to escape for at least another four years. “Who are these people?” she wondered to herself.
”We raised you better, young lady.” Destiny continued, Have some respect for the deceased.”
”I knew it smelled like someone died. Good thing you had an emergency candle.”
Kristen’s mouth fell open, aghast at what just got said. She looked for any sort of assurance that they were kidding. That this wasn’t true. Destiny turned to go back and sit with Jason. They resumed what they had been doing prior to the interruption. It was like the argument had never even happened.
”It’s going to be new beginnings for all of us” Jason muttered. “You may not understand, but we do.”
”We love you Kristen.”
”I hate you! BOTH of you! You can burn in hell together!!”
Kristen slammed the door as hard as she possibly could. The windows rattled from the force. Because the house was nearly empty, the loud bang echoed through every wall. It didn’t faze either of them. Destiny went about humming to herself again. Jason kissed her head, but started chuckling after.
”What?”
”Being told we can burn in hell together. Like we’d have it any other way.”
Destiny couldn’t help but find humor in that. She stood while pulling Jason up by the hand. “I think she’s taken the title of miss cranky pants. She’ll be ok. Change is hard for some to understand. To accept. She’ll come around.”
”Well we know Jimmy won’t be anymore.”
Laughter filled the room one last time. Jason explained the mental image he had and it was off to the races with continued hysterics. Out in the house somewhere, the sounds of boisterous children made their presence felt. They had a final look at the place. Where things once were and where memories happened. Destiny couldn’t stop her eyes from tearing up. For fifteen long years, they called this place home. Now it was an empty shell. Jason gently ran his right index finger just under her eyes, wiping away each drop that ran out. Destiny smiled as she hugged him tight. ”It’s time to go.”
Hand in hand out the door. Kristen was still angry. Autumn corralled her sisters and got them situated in the car. Jason signaled to the driver of the moving truck to go ahead. He looked at the house one more time and sighed. Having enough of that, he got into the car and soon was driving his family away to a new home in Anaheim.
”Back together in PCW again, the way it should rightfully be.” Destiny said with excitement.
Jason smiled as Destiny turned on the radio. They caught “I Can See Clearly Now” by Johnny Nash mid-song. They took one look at each other and didn’t waste a second to do a duet.
I can see clearly now, the rain is gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.
