(author's note: Even though I posted mine first, to get the full picture of this story, read Dollface 's RP first.)
The trees lining the path of PCW's premiere couple were craggy, brooding, and misshapen, foreboding in presence. They cast shadows that drew upon fears, and the wind through those willows sung hymns of malcontent as Nathan and Kelli approached. A dark, violet fog slithered across the forest floor, its smoky tendrils silently screaming its unquenched desire to rid every living thing it touched of their existence. Yet nothing was harmed by the fog rolling in. As the smoke reached out to things on the landscape, despite its horrific aura, it would recoil from some things as if they were made of a Darkness even more vile.
The soil appeared as if it were barren, even under the leafless trees, save for patches of foliage both beautiful and terrifying. A lone sQuirrel, scampering at top speed to avoid both detection and predation wandered a bit too close to one flower, something that looked similar to a Venus fly trap, but with teeth that rivaled a chainsaw. The man sized petals of the hinged maw scooped up the frightened rodent with one shrill sQueak, chewing and gulping its prey within seconds before resetting itself for its next victim.
"What is this awful place?" Nathan wondered aloud as Kelli grasped his arm, leaning into him for security. "How... How did we create this?"
Even Kelli looked puzzled at the oddball world around them. She glanced back, seeing where the two had came form; a place filled with sunshine and happiness. Slowly she returned her gaze forward, noting the transition into this awful place. It was night and day. Something glimmered in the dwindling light, seemingly giving off its own bioluminesence as it approached. It flashed patterns of blue and green in flight that were hypnotic, breathtaking. Its wings spread as wide as a grown man's hand, a gorgeous lobe trailing behind the lower of the pair flanking each side.
Kelli absently put out her hand, helplessly transfixed by its approach. "NO! It's a blood-terfly!" Just before it landed, Nathan stuck his hand over hers. As it did, it lashed out with a forearm reminiscent of a praying mantis, gashing his hand open. The scent of a fresh wound caused the forest to come alive with flashing blue and green displays. The initial assailant rested on the back of Nathan's hand, drinking its fill of his essence as he attempted to shake it away.
Finally released from its spell, Kelli swatted the parasite away, Nathan following through with his cane, like Babe Ruth swinging for the fences. The pair opted to go back the way they came, the shining light driving away the critters as they attempted to feast. Standing at the edge of the bipolar world, they huffed at their escape, staring wide-eyed at the land they just exited.
"How did you know what that was, Nathan?" queried Kelli, sucking through her teeth as she discovered a few of her own new injuries.
Before Nathan could even answer, a pair of demonic eyes stared back at them from the forest, encased in darkness as it drew near. "Because," the glowering stare beamed, its owner still enshrined in mystery, "this part of this... creation came from your fears. As did I." Finally stepping into the light where it could be seen, N. Saniti sneered at the pair.
He reveled in the gap-mouthed shock couple before him. "I don't understand," started Nathan. "You're part of me. Not a part I'm particularly proud of, but a piece of the whole nonetheless." He struggled for an explanation in his mind, yet nothing would surface. It was as though the Creator himself had no inkling of what to expect as he fashioned it. "How can you be here?"
N. Saniti cast a pointed finger at their beloved. "Her love," he explained, "set us both free."
Kelli began to tremble in Nathan's arms, causing him concern. "Are you okay, my dearest?"
Kelli's mind flashed back to her time in the Infiniti Council Chamber. She had met so many people, most of whom either resembled or perhaps were famous historical and iconic figures. Even a pale woman with a bouffant high enough to make Marge Simpson jealous, approached her, introduced herself as Marie Antoinette, and gave her a rabbit's foot with the simple notion, "When the time is right, you'll know what to do, mon cherie."
Her brain raced from memory to memory, her body shook visibly from the torrent of recollection. finally, it came to rest upon the face(s) of the one the members of the Council referred to as the Exalted One. He was an enigma to her as he crossed the room. His facial features would change depending upon whom he talked to.
As he talked to Genghis Kahn, his face became round, the top of his head bald, and his tone both joyous and stern. Stepping closer, he paused to talk to a man of Middle Eastern decent, his face morphing into what she could only imagine as Mohammed. He nodded to another man, his now long brunette hair flowing behind his bearded face. finally, he stood next to Kelli, the halo behind him making his countenance blurred. She looked away as he gently clasped her hands.
"We have important works for you to do, my child." She still couldn't make out a single line on his face, the glow from his aura preventing recognition. He chuckled softly, his touch comforting her in spite of her inability to look at him. "You're not sure what to believe just yet. We've all been there. Once you figure it out, everything will become clear. Use your powers wisely, but sparingly. They can be as addictive as any drug. In time you'll learn your limits, and you'll be able to control them, Kelli."
Kelli?
Kelli?
"Kelli?" She snapped from her flashback, her shivering subsiding. Nathan, both halves of him, staring at her with anxiety.
Kelli absently reached into her pocket, stroking a rabbit's foot that, until now, she never knew how it got there. Then her body went limp. The Nathans slowly set her on the ground, astonished as pillowy fluff materialized underneath her to cushion her as she rested.
"I could stand in for her at Mass Destruction VI, if you like," offered N. Saniti, his usual gruff tone now softened by disquiet. "The Shaw Brothers..."
"The Shaw Brothers," Nathan interjected, "are no more a bother to me than Alexa was to you. To us."
N. Saniti leered at his other half, lips pursed in growing rage. "Alexa will always try to play the numbers game."
"Perhaps," Nathan stated. "I think she has her plate full. For the first time in a while, she has a chance to prove she is as powerful as she dictates. If she can take the North American title from Non Compos Mentis, she can show the world that she truly is a threat." They rested her head upon a mound of fluff, her chest expanding and contracting sleepily. "I may not have you inside me anymore, but I can still handle her and her thugs. After all, a trap isn't a trap..."
"...If you're aware it's there," finished N. Saniti. "Just know that though I reside here, you can call on me any time you need, any time you don't wish to get your hands dirty."
Nathan looked at his darker half, befuddled. "Do you suppose Miss Starr..."
"Kelli." N. Saniti paffed him across the back of his head. "After the moments you two just shared, you insist upon being a prim and proper putz?"
Nathan blushed beet red. "Kelli, then. Do you supposed our beloved gave us this ability? The ability to switch places on a whim?"
"I'm not sure. You'll need to bring her here to train her abilities." N. Saniti looked her over, a slight lick of lust in his eyes, a look that didn't go unnoticed. the Darker Half sighed with disappointment. "She'll likely never wish to be with me. Take good care of her, Nathan."
A pang of pity echoed in Nathan's heart as N. Saniti stood. Joining him upright, Nathan extended a hand. "She may tire of this 'prim and proper putz' at some point and wish to experience life to its fullest."
N. Saniti took the hand offered like a longtime friend. "Remember," he began with a coy smile, "Your body is mine as well. What happens to you happens to me and vice versa." He brushed himself off, straightening his vest. "I guess I'd better go find myself a home. If you need me, call." He turned to the ghastly jungle, but before he started walking away, he returned his red glowing gaze to Nathan. "If anything happens to her, I'll kill us both."
He strode away confidently and silently as Nathan briefly pondered his words before kneeling at his lover's side. "Every end has its beginning, and every beginning its end. Rest, my sweet, for a new adventure awaits us at these crossroads."
