The celebration of Dan Fierce’s Icemann Invitational Tournament victory is in full effect. The falling glitter sticks to his sweaty body as he drops to his knees and takes in the roof-shaking cheers of the fans throughout the arena.
At least, that’s what we can see on the television monitor as Dontevius rushes through. He rubs his forehead in frustration.
"I said I’d be there for her… Stand up for her..."
Dontevius’ frantic mumbling is interrupted by a scream.
"Kelli!"
Dontevius cuts on a dime and bolts in the direction of the scream. He runs down the hall, cuts left, then grabs the door marked ‘STAIRS’ and throws it open. He enters the stairwell and uses the guardrail to leap down the first set of steps to the landing and again to reach the next landing with a door marked ‘B.’ He throws the door open and rushes out to a three-way intersection and stops. Before him, Brenna Gordon is staring at a wooden coffin that’s been nailed shut.
"Is she in there? Get her out!" Dontevius shouts in exasperation.
"What do you think I’m doing here!? Help me find something to pry this thing open with!" Brenna quickly responded.
Dontevius looks around for a moment before dashing to a section of piping. He grabs, twists, and yanks until he’s able to free a section of piping. He tosses a piece to Brenna, seemingly oblivious to the nasty liquid that now covers his flesh and clothing. He pulls another piece of the piping free and moves to the other side. He wedges the piping into the thin crevice separating the lid and the body of the coffin.
"Hurry up!" Brenna shouts to him.
"I’m trying!" Dontevius shoots back.
After a few moments, both Brenna and Dontevius are able to pull the nails out enough to grab the lid of the coffin and rip it free and to the floor. Dontevius leans in and looks into the coffin to find Kel…
… sey?
"It’s too late…"
"Face it, you were never good enough for her," Brenna added.
Dontevius looks to Brenna then back to Kelsey.
"I… I don’t understand…"
Kelsey Taylor, the love of Dontevius’ life, lies in the coffin. Her arms lay peacefully on her chest and her hands hold a single blue candle with a matching blue flame. This was certainly not what Dontevius expected to find in his search.
"You could’ve saved me, D. It could’ve been us against the world…"
"No, that was never…"
"I came to you one last time. I wanted to hear you tell me how you felt. I always thought we’d end up together."
"Bullshit!" Dontevius responds with a look of horror on his face. "Why would to agree to marry someone, him, if you wanted to end up with me?"
"Why are you surprised?" her cracked voice intoned. "I was a high school girl. Do you think I ever would’ve just said what I wanted?"
"You had your chance and you said goodbye," Brenna stated in omniscience. "You knew what that would mean and you did it anyway. Whenever you see what you want, you walk away from it--"
"No!" Dontevius interjected. "That’s not true!"
"Of course it is," Kelsey contributed. "Your football career… You could’ve been a star but you made choices that ensured you’d never be successful. You made those choices knowing they would stop you. You couldn’t save me, just like you couldn’t save Kelli. Are you arrogant enough still to continue playing the victim while ruining others’ lives?"
"Saving you was not my job," Dontevius said as he shook his head.
"We can add ‘deflecting blame’ to the list," Kelsey responded closing her eyes.
"I wanted to help Kelli! I wanted to help you! Sometimes, you just can’t…"
His voice trails off. Kelsey exhales her final breath, her death rattle shaking Dontevius to the core. He then hears a shuffling of feet behind him and reluctantly turns around. Approaching is none other than Nathan Saniti.
"You couldn’t save my love, nor could you save yours. We are doomed to be alone… Forever…"
The wicked smile on his face does not seem to match up with the words spoken. As he nears Dontevius, his head slowly begins to turn. It turns the full 360 degrees and continues turning, the footsteps continuing to draw nearer. Dontevius backs away from the coffin and against the wall as Nathan continues to approach.
"No… No…"
…
"No!" Dontevius suddenly shrieks.
Benton Ryan, Dontevius’ sports agent, jumps at the sudden scream from the man sitting next to him. Dontevius’ eyes shoot open and he looks around frantically.
"Where… Where is…"
"We’re just getting into Greenville," Benton assures him.
Dontevius looks around and finds himself in the back of a limousine. His pulse is still through the roof as his blurred surroundings come into focus.
"Were you having that dream again with the coffin and the head spinning?"
"Yeah," Dontevius replied as he sat back against the seat and took a few deep breaths. "Yeah, I guess so."
"Like I said before, you have to remember that they’re just dreams."
"No, it’s different. I know," Dontevius said as he put his hand up to stop Benton’s interjection, "that I sleep and these things happen but they’re not quite dreams. I don’t know how to explain it."
"What other explanation is there?" Benton asked. "It’s not like it’s something that could happen. The guy’s head spins all the way around, D. That doesn’t happen."
"There’s meaning there somehow," Dontevius said as he looked down at the floorboard. "Some important detail… Some…"
"That’s not to mention that the scenario you’re seeing is based on an experience you’ve already had. It’s not like you’re seeing the future."
"The future," Dontevius mumbled as his eyes slowly widened. "I need to find Kelsey! Benton, you have to help me--"
"Calm down, D. You’ve got a match to focus on. Nathan Saniti was on a hot streak until he stumbled against Dan Fierce. This is no joke. If your head isn’t in this match, you’re going to lose."
"Then we’d better find her quick, huh?" Dontevius pointed out. "The sooner I find whether or not she’s alive… Alright… I’ll focus on Saniti."
"Good news then," Benton said with a smile. "I already put my people on it. We found her on social media, Facebook to be exact. She posted a message just this morning talking about the sun shining and how it’ll be another beautiful day. Does that calm your nerves?"
"Oh," Dontevius said as his eyes teared up slightly. "Yeah, I guess it does."
"Don’t worry. We’ll figure out what’s going on in that head of yours and we’ll get it worked out. For now, get prepared for Saniti. Get ready to continue shocking the world this week."
"Yeah," Dontevius said as he shook the tears away. "Of course."
The limousine speeds off down Interstate 385 as the scene slowly fades.
End.
