“Fourth down and six to go! The season could very well be on the line here.”
The crowd was on pins and needles. The radio announcer had set up the drama for his listeners and the drama was real. Down four with only a minute and thirty-two seconds left, the team lined up at their opponents’ thirty-five yard line.
“Jeremy Young under center. The scouts are watching. This drive could help decide his future!” the radio announcer proclaimed.
Of course, Jeremy would never have a future as his life was ripped away in a fatal accident. That was another day, however. Today, he had every intention of quarterbacking his team to victory. Whether he would do it, however, would be decided in the next ten minutes or so.
Jeremy looked out at the defense and stood up.
“Roger! Roger! Roger!”
It was a fake audible call as he pointed to the opposite side of the field toward wide receiver Luke Williams. The defense shifted and the free safety repositioned to make closing on Luke easier. It was exactly what Jeremy wanted. He dropped back down under center.
“Hut!”
The ball came out and Jeremy dropped back looking to Luke. The defense jumped to Luke’s side and I streaked up the sideline. As I stopped in my post pattern, Jeremy turned and saw me. He released the ball and it hit me in the hands mere moments later. I turned, almost smelling the end zone. I ran for it with the strong safety bearing down ahead. I bolted straight for him but, at the last possible moment, hesitated and juked to the right. He dove past me in a tackle attempt and left nothing but green ahead of me. I bolted but, just as I approached the goal line, I felt a weight hit my back, then another. I stretched the ball out in desperation…
“First down!”
Damnit! The clock was ticking. We had to hurry. I lined up as the rest of the team hurried to the line of scrimmage. I looked at Jeremy and he reached under to take the snap and spike the ball to stop the clock. He took the ball, faked the spike, and dove for the goal line. I watched in anticipation.
“Referee signals that he’s short!”
The clock was still running. It was second down but without any timeouts remaining, now he had to spike the ball. The clock stopped at twenty seven seconds.
After a quick huddle, we ran out and lined up for third down. Jeremy took the snap and handed it off to Ross Givens. Ross saw a hole and ran for it but the hole quickly closed and he was pushed back.
Tick. Tick. Tick.
Fourth down. It was now or never.
Jeremy lined up and, with two seconds left on the clock, he took the snap. I faked a fade route to the back corner of the end zone and cut across the field. I looked up and locked eyes with Jeremy. In that instant, it felt as if time slowed. I saw the look on his face.
“You have to catch this,” his eyes said as his arm came back.
“I will,” I said as I prepared for his trajectory.
The ball sliced through the air toward me. I saw the linebackers reach for the ball and a corner and both safeties converged on the spot. I leapt into the air and reached for the ball...
... And I caught it. We won the game and advanced to the state finals where we lost by a pair of scores. In your mind, this incredible moment was just dulled by the fact that we didn’t go all the way, wasn’t it?
It’s not an unfamiliar story.
Enter Brenna Gordon. She burst onto the scene in PCW and blasted through the competition, even nearly taking down now-PCW World Champion Grimm on her way through. She advanced to the finals of the Icemann Invitational Tournament before finally being halted by my partner last week Dan Fierce. She defeated Kelli Starr to become Underground Queen and hasn’t looked back from the start of her reign. It’s been possibly the best start to a PCW career in history.
Oh, and there’s also me.
My road hasn’t been nearly as brilliant. With a debut loss to Murdoc in the Last Chance Battle Royal, a loss to Nathan Saniti, and a loss in my first attempt at the Underground Championship, I’ve been overshadowed by Brenna’s success. And hey, she deserves all the credit in the world for everything she’s done.
Our stories will likely be forever intertwined. We came in around the same time and did some amazing things. She just did them first and did them better. There’s no denying it. That’s fact. There may come a time when the PCW World Championship is on the line in a Brenna Gordon/Dontevius Ellis match. This match is that big, that relevant. For now, you can tune into the Icey’s and see Brenna score victory after victory over me.
Most Loved? Brenna may not win but she’ll likely get more votes than I will.
Best Singles Star? She’s a nominee while I’d have to be written in by the fans.
Breakout Star? Brenna has to win that category. It’s hers to lose.
But this is where Brenna’s guaranteed victories end. When the final event takes place, Brenna will put that Underground Championship on the line against yours truly. While being the deserving favorite, even she knows better than to overlook me as most will when voting for the Iceys. She knows that this will be one of the toughest challenges she’s seen yet. I may not be big and scary like Grimm, nor am I Dan Fierce. But I can tell you that I am capable of amazing things. When I launched myself into the air and took out Murdoc and the Shaws, the cell phone flashes filled the arena. Dan was amazing in there and defeated the North American Champion but the moment that made this possible was what will be remembered. Look back one week and you’ll see where I laid out the North American Champion myself with brutal force outside the ring. Brenna was able to capitalize and win the match before I could break the count but I again had my moment.
I’m capable of amazing.
Fortunately, amazing is what it will take to dethrone Brenna Gordon. She’s been champion as long as she has, defended the championship as many times as she has, because she’s deserving of so much more. Me? I want to give her that opportunity. I want to defeat her in the epic match everyone has been waiting for and take the mantle of Underground King. I want to run through opponents and attempt to match the incredible streak she’s been able to keep up. Wanting isn’t what it takes.
I am what it takes.
You can have your Iceys, Brenna. I want that championship belt. That’s all that matters now. You’ll have your opportunities, maybe against Alexa Black or the winner of Andy D and Seromine. I need my beginning. I need my crowning moment. I have all the respect in the world for you and I know that you’re just as excited about this match as I. You will win plenty at Trauma but I will win last. There’s no Darkness in our way. We don’t need to gameplan for extracurricular activities. Trim the fat and it’s just you and me.
No votes.
No interference.
No limits.
At the end of the night, the Queen steps down from her throne and embarks on a new journey, to seek out new kingdoms to claim, new enemies to vanquish, new challenges to overcome. As for the rest of you? You’ll be left with only one thing to say.
Long live the King.
All Day, Every Day.
