A picture perfect sunrise was beginning to say good morning to the realm as it relieved the moon of it’s celestial hour. The rays peaked through the groves, casting deep shadows off the earth. The followers no longer were around the eternal flame, having scattered away to their quarters for sleep. In Labyrinth Grove, things were about to be of a more festive nature...it was the birthday (September 23) of Jason and Destiny’s eldest daughter, Kristen, who officially reached year fifteen.
Her parents anxiously waited outside of her bedroom, trying in vain to conceal their laughter. They were up to no good. But that was nothing new when it came to the children’s birthdays. You could always count on them to have something planned. Fun in nature, but always a surprise in execution as they were never quite sure when it would happen. Only that it would.
“Babe, shh. We’ve got to do this quietly. Last thing we want is for her to hear us.”
“Oh man, this is going to be good. Just wait until next year.”
“Hey you. Don’t be trying to age me. Wait. You’re older than I am. Age away! Hehe.”
“That may be, but your body says otherwise. OHHH!”
Destiny rolled her tongue inside of her cheek, nodding and undoubtedly taking a mental note for later. Brushing a strand of hair out of the way, she cups her husband’s mouth to quiet him, while placing her free index finger over her lips. Jason nods and reaches for the doorknob. Slowly turning it, the door is pushed in with minimal light soon eloping over the fading darkness inside of her bedroom. The creased outline of a body was glimpsed underneath the blankets. Jason and Destiny flanked the bed as each grabbed hold of the sheet.
“1.”
“2.”
“3!”
“HAPPY BIRTH…day.”
It wasn’t Kristen in the bed, but rather her twin sisters Nancy and Madeleine. They looked up sheepishly, giggling to themselves. Their parents stared at one another and then back at them.
“Ok you two, what did you do with your sister?”
“We don’t knooow...” spoke Nancy, shrugging as if to feign her innocence.
“We um, wanted to sleep in her bed!” squealed Madeleine.
“Oh you just wanted to sleep in her bed, did you?”
“Uh-huh!”
“Hear that, Destiny? They just wanted to sleep in her bed.”
“Aww. Well if that’s what they want to do...”
“Sure. That’s ok. But what about the...TICKLE MONSTER!”
“Oh no!”
Jason pounced and began the process on Nancy, with Destiny getting her sister. The six year olds were helpless against their much stronger parents and were forced to deal with non stop sensations that induced laughter and squirming. Resistance was useless. Kristen was MIA and Autumn...was presumably being a good girl and sleeping peacefully. If she were smart, she’d have nothing to do with this plan! Once the tickling stopped, Jason wraps his arms around their heads and walks them off the bed, “Next stop for you little scheming rugrats, noogieville!”
“No! Noo noogieville!”
Destiny sat on the edge of the bed and laughed at the sight. The girls were spared from such a pit stop and decided to double team dad instead. The “evil” laughter reigned down as they ferociously attacked him as fast as their little hands would allow. Jason laughed and tried to protect himself. At one point he even tried to use Destiny as a shield, but it was of no use. They were too much for him and he had no choice but resign himself to his fate. He always enjoyed any quality time he could spend with his children. They both did. They came before the grind of professional wrestling. That after all, was just a job. They were life.
“Don’t forget to tickle him. Daddy is very ticklish on his tummy, and his sides and his feet.”
“Traitor!”
The dog pile was on as noogies became tickles. But only now, Autumn had found her way into the room to see what all of the fuss was about.
“Autumn, hahahaha, HELP MEEE!”
Autumn smirked and looked at her mom, who practically rolled out the red carpet for her to join in. She thought long and hard about it, but seemed distracted by something outside of the room. Jason managed to corral his little tyrants in his arms and gently squeezed them together before looking in the direction of Autumn.
“What’s out there?”
“Huh? Oh, uh...nothing! Nothing at all. I was just coming to see...no tell you guys, good morning!”
Yeah right.
“Are you sure?” Destiny asked as she stood “You seem awfully mysterious this early in the morning...”
“Mysterious? Me? Mom, that’s silly.”
Autumn’s body was seen motioning and then footsteps were heard running. “Babe! She’s in the house!”
“Kristen, run!”
Jason let go of his kids and joined Destiny in chasing the birthday girl down the stairs and through the kitchen. Kristen was laughing about something as she made it outside, closing the door behind her. The second Jason and Destiny opened the door, a whole BUCKET of orange juice dumped on their heads. Destiny froze in horror, shrieking as the sticky liquid dripped down her body. Jason was more dramatic about it once he realized the color that was on his skin.
“I’ve been TRUMPED! She trumped me, hun!! I’m melting! Melting!!”
And then came the theatrics Margaret Hamilton put on display back in ‘39. Kristen was doubled over with laughter, pointing and clapping at her handiwork. This whole thing had been a clever set-up. She knew all too well the sorts of things her parents did, and this year, decided to get them first.
“I believe you wanted to tell me Happy Birthday?”
EFFIGIES
Early evening was fast approaching. After Jason and Destiny showered and got changed, plans were made with Kristen over how she wanted to celebrate her day. Much to their shock, she requested a visit to Anaheim to see the old house and visit the mall. Traveling was...different than if they were still living in that reality. This would require the realm portal to open, something none of the children had been exposed to yet. Kristen was wise for her years and understood some of the aspects of Labyrinth Grove and Absinthe that had previously been explained.
But this would be new. He requested some time to talk with Destiny about it, which is what he was doing now as they sat outside.
“I don’t like the idea, Destiny. It’s too soon.”
“I know. I know. But we can’t keep it a secret forever. You and I know there is no danger from it, but she’s not ready to know the truth. To see what we see.”
“What if I just work some sort of magic and bring the things she loves here? It’ll expire at midnight and disappear as if it never existed...”
“No.” Destiny replied “She’s too smart, she’d know the difference.”
Jason sighed as Destiny ran her hand along his cheek. “Anaheim isn’t our home right now. This is. And until our mission has been completed, there’s no sense in mixing the two.”
“Yeah...”
“You know I’m right, babe and I know it’s her birthday, but we simply can’t do it. Not right now.”
Jason nodded. Destiny knew her husband better than he knew himself and when it came to parenting, the two were identical in approach for the most part. “What of the Deadly Rumble?”
“I’m entering it. After I send High Tide packing right back into the locker room titleless, I’ll prepare to make my mark a second time and walk away as contender to the biggest title in PCW.”
“Neither Grimm nor Murdoc will be easy, you know. Both are monsters in the ring and their legacies speak for themselves. Should you win, having the winner as a partner at Trauma 200 can only help you scout further. Should you not...”
“Then our plan goes back to what it always has been. Fret not, my love. They are on the opposite side of the ring that night and I fully intend to pick up where I left off.”
Destiny’s smile curved sadistically as she nuzzles her face into his neck. He was looking into the groves, gazing at the distance where the followers were moving by way of candlelight.
“Get the girls. This is Kristen’s night of celebration.”
“You mean…?” Destiny asked looking her husband right in the eyes.
“Yes. We’re going to Absinthe. There’s scouting to be done there, too.”
