The more we sweat in peace the less we bleed in war. - Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit
November is a time of remembering for us Brits. And even for the Americans as well. On the 5th of November we have Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Night, a day to “celebrate” the burning of a terrorist who failed to blow up the houses of parliament in 1605. Fun fact though, Guy Fawkes himself was never burned at the stake, as you often see effigies of him doing at Firework displays, he was actually sentenced to be Hung, Drawn and Quartered (another misnomer since the “Drawn” part happens first. Also Fawkes didn’t get hung or quartered, he slipped getting into the noose and broke his neck that way). Still, a hangman’s noose wouldn’t provide nearly enough warmth on a cold fireworks night, so probably just as well we remember that wrongly.
We also have the main point of remembrance, Remembrance Sunday is the Sunday closest to the Armistice Day. Both days are a day to remember all the men and women who have died serving the country, not just in the First World War to which Armistice Day originated from the end of, but for every single conflict held since. It is a chance to give thanks to those who died for their country and to all those who have ever stepped up to serve in the armed forces.
Giving thanks is something that you American’s know well, being that you have an entire day in November based around the subject. A time to be thankful for what you have, what has happened or just to the people around you for being around you. I also see this as a time to think back, to remember all that has happened to shape you as the people you are today. And while this year may be tougher for some to give thanks to, I know that you as a nation are strong, and together you keep this a nation to be proud of, a nation where people like me want to come and live because of how awesome it is.
With all this remembering this month, it’s no wonder I’ve been recalling the times that my forthcoming opponent and I have crossed paths. We haven’t really fought that often over the years, the last time being back in 2014 when he was teamed with the Black Hand, that match went very odd after Murdoc, who was supposed to be on my team ended up throwing both members of Psychedelica (also on my team) out of the ring and on top of me. There was a Last Chance Battle Royal that same year which we were both involved in.
But it was 2012 where we mostly crossed paths. Trauma 124 was the only time that I’ve faced Cory Steel one on one before this upcoming trauma. The following show on 125, I faced off against him in a Tag match, he had Q as his partner, where I had Puro Power Kaijin Shinryu (now there’s a name from the history books).
It was actually ironic at the time to be facing off against him in a tag match, not a few months before we had been forced to team up as part of a Tag Team tournament. He was going by Korey Kill at that point, having broken away from the invading AWAssholes at the time. I didn’t really rate him much at the time, less so his ability and more because of his word. He let his vendetta against Whitey Ford cost us several matches, and ultimately the tournament, all the while telling me that he was focused and committed to the team, to winning the tournament and that the whole thing with Ford was not going to happen anymore.
I always wonder if how I viewed Korey and our team up was how Crazy Boy saw me while we were a team way back in the day. The difference being that I wasn’t going and trying to beat someone up instead of focusing on our matches. I just wasn’t as bothered when we didn’t win as somebody was.
Now Corey has gone through a few name changes since then, and he’s done some pretty impressive things as both a single competitor and in the tag division. But once again he may find himself in a battle away from the ring, one that may threaten his victories in it. This time though he’s not the aggressor, but the prey as his former tag partner Judge is the one leading the fight.
Will this affect my match this week, will Judge interfere in it? Will Corey even make it to the ring after the beating and disappearance act from the last Trauma? I don’t know. I do know that because of the Underground rules Corey would be at a disadvantage should Judge interfere as he can do so blatantly. Part of me wishes that I won’t capitalize on this, part of me wishes that should that happen I would fight off Judge and try to keep the match a fair level playing field.
Part of me is a competitor that wants to win. Part of me still dislikes Korey Kill for our tag team failures all those years ago. Part of me knows exactly why Crazy Boy holds a grudge against me all these years.
November is a time for remembrance, reflection and giving thanks. I wonder how this match will be remembered by all those involved this time next year.
