Where....
Where am I?
I open my eyes, expecting the swirling green with the faintest tinge of purple that had become my reality all too often lately. Falling, always falling and yet the first thing I noticed, was the lack of the familiar sickening sensation. No green. No purple.
Red.
I was sitting on a beach. I couldn't name the beach, I'd never seen it before. There weren't a lot that I hadn't seen in my day, but this one was different. It's sands were red like a rose decided to take a ketchup bath. Beautiful. Yet I still had no answer. Where the hell was I? I had never left the green upon entering before, except when my consciousness would finally give and I would find myself back where I started.
I stood up and tested my land legs. All seemed to be in order, one booted foot in front of the other. The crunch of the red sand was delicious to my ears. I heard gulls, and other birds that I could not identify letting loose their songs for the world to hear. I could feel the spray of the water, whether it was ocean, lake, or sea, I was not sure. The feel of the misty particles splashing across the back of my neck was refreshing.
I had no sense of direction in this strange new place. Truth be told, I wasn't even sure if I was on Earth, or the same Earth I had left. From what had been explained to me on my little green forays so far was that dimensions were vast, the green worked almost unpredictably and pretty much you were just along for the ride. What “encouraging” and “inspiring” information I had been imparted with.
What I had figured out for myself was that when I returned, barely any time had passed. At first I thought it was just my foggy mind, that there was no way that could be such a short experience. The second, the third, the fourth time and beyond proved that it was not a mere fluke or miscalculation. This was a good thing for me. It meant that I would not miss my match against Gabriel. A number one contender match was one hell of a shot, and I was glad to know time spent in a vortex was not going to cost me. The only thing I really had to worry about was falling into the green while in the match. Hell of a show that would be though I grinned to myself. How would they explain that one. Probably pass it on as television magic I chuckled as I kept moving forward one foot after the other waiting for some sort of landmark to alert me to my whereabouts.
It's not as though it was a void like The Green. Various birds flew overhead, from what looked like gulls ranging to birds I'd never seen before in my life. One for example was a bright orange massive specimen of a bird. A cool crimson streak went down it's chest and just something about the way the colours were so beyond vibrant really unnerved me. I was beginning to wonder more and more where the hell The Green had deposited me. I hadn't had any instruction on this. I didn't much like it.
There were pieces of driftwood, and shells and even the occasional crab lining the beach . I thought I saw one that was purple but when I looked back it was nowhere to be seen. The place was unnerving me more and more. I had a big match coming up, one that could propel me to a successful near future, and for once it wasn't the most dominating thing on my mind. Gabriel would just have to wait until I figured out where the hell I was and what the hell I was going to do about it.
It was starting to get hot, but I hated to shed my attire. It was just too damn much to carry the coat, and besides, I needed all the protection I could get. I had no idea where I was and I wasn't going to expose myself needlessly like that. It was a good thing too. Looking forward again I noticed shapes far off in the distance. Humanoid, so that probably meant humans if I wasn't being too paranoid. Good, maybe they would be able to help me.
My pace quickened, my boots crunching against the sand with a renewed vigor as I headed towards the figures off in the distance. It wasn't too long before I could see them more clearly and my hurried, excited steps became a slow paced walk as I weighed my options. There were six of them, and all armed with spears.... spears? I gave my head a shake. Still spears. Hmm. Fascinating. Yet it meant I could not trust them, because I didn't know what their intentions were. Wrestler or not I was not going to fight off four males and two females with spears. It just wasn't going to work out for me.
As soon as they got into earshot I yelled out making my intentions clear. “HELLO. I SEEM TO HAVE GOTTEN LOST. COULD YOU TELL ME WHERE I AM. I MEAN NO HARM.” I put my hands in the air in what I hoped was a universal sign for peace and being unarmed.
Now that they were closer I could see that they were human... or at least some form of it. Something seemed a little off about them. Two were pale skinned (one male and one female) and the others were dark. Both these things happened on Earth, I told myself, that was normal. Yet as I looked at their faces, all of their features seemed... too small. Not just on one person but the group as a whole. Maybe it was just a genetic thing. I still had hope I was not somewhere else.
They wore simple handmade clothes. I had never seen handmade clothing before other than the knitting of grandmothers, and that sort of thing. This was completely different. The clothing was almost all brown, with on swatches of colour, reds, blues, yellows, here and there. It looked rough and patchy, as if it had been made of old burlap sacks. What struck me as the most odd was how imperfect it was, in the traditional sense. It was nothing like the shirt I was wearing, for example. You could tell it had been done by hand, not by any sort of measurement or machine.
What confirmed to me that I was not on Earth, or at least on the dimension I was accustomed to, was when they spoke to me. As they closed in on me in a ring, leaving me no exit, they pointed their spears up at me. My arms raised in the air I could do nothing but talk. “I am no threat, I just wish to know where I am,” I said to them trying my best to hold even the slightest bit of confidence in my voice but I was failing pretty hard at that. I was not prepared for their response because it took me a moment to process it. It wasn't like any language I had ever heard before. It was hard to explain but there best way to describe it was a series of quick hisses intertwined between sharp, loud , seemingly random sounds. I was uncomfortable now and starting to sweat. We could not communicate, and I was surrounded by the deadly pointed tips of spears on all sides.
Unable to stare at my possible death any longer, I in a moment of weakness looked down at the ground, resigning myself to my possible fate. A familiar and surprisingly comforting sight met my stare.
The Green.
Hopefully here to take me back to my ship, where I had originally fallen into it. Back to Earth. Back in time for me to stand toe to toe with Gabriel and give him my all. A spear came towards me but before it could land, I was gone.
Back into The Green.
