Gabriel did not light any candles at home this night. He had not lit any in quite some time. He wanted to experience life as it truly was: devoid of light.
Seromine, his lord, had not spoken to him since the events of Living a Legacy. Destiny had laughed and ridiculed him. And she was right to do so. He was dirt.
Who did he think he was, anyway? The Lord was defeated by the evil magician. The title was taken from His holy grasp and placed into the hands of sinner. And what did Gabriel do about it? Nothing. He allowed this travesty to happen. And now Gabriel was scheduled to compete for that same championship, the one that should rightfully be held by his Lord. But there is no way Gabriel can actually be victorious. If the Lord had failed to conquer the evil that is Nathan Saniti, then surely one of his humble disciples has no chance. The fact that he had momentarily believed that he could just showed how naïve – how stupid – he truly was.
There has to be a way to give the title opportunity the Lord, the only one who truly deserves it.
Gabriel needed to figure out how to do this. Not only is it the right thing to do for the fate of the world, but it may also put him back into God’s good graces.
The Lord has forsaken him, and rightfully so. He is a failure. He is an embarrassment. He is a fool. Since being saved, he has done little to show that he deserves his place alongside the Lord. And that is why he has been left behind. That is why he is in the dark, both literally and figuratively.
Feelings of desperation came over him. Gabriel needed to prove himself to the Lord. He needed to speak to him, even for a minute. But Seromine had not come to call. He had seemingly vanished. There are rumours that He has returned to Anaheim. But Gabriel did not believe those lies. Those theories are spread by nonbelievers to discredit the greatness of the Lord. They are used by sinners to weaken His message. The Lord could not possibly be returning to a life of sin and anarchy. He is the most holy being the world has ever seen. He is greatness personified. He is truly everything that is good. There is no way He is returning to where he once resided. He had grown from wickedness and filth and had advanced beyond what anyone thought possible. He had shown the world what it means to truly be kind, loving, and accepting. He was The Lord!
No, the reason He hasn’t been in contact with Gabriel was not because he was heading back to His old life. That's impossible. It's a lie. He must be avoiding Gabriel because Gabriel has let him down. It has to be because Gabriel is a failure. Disgust has turned Lord Seromine away from him. Once again, Gabriel has let down someone who loved him.
“Don’t do this,” he thought to himself. “Do not allow your life to be tainted by the failures of your former self. Do not allow the sinful ways of Rick Majors to infiltrate your thoughts. You must focus. You must come up with a plan. You must win the Lord back.”
Perhaps the Lord was testing him. Perhaps He was waiting for Gabriel to prove himself worthy before returning.
He did not know how to do this. The Icemann Invitational did not turn out as it should have. Gabriel was supposed to be victorious. He was supposed to win the entire thing and prove to the world that God is great. The goal was to display the power of the Lord to all of the nonbelievers. Instead, he failed. Instead, Kyle Shane, the man who defeated him, had won the tournament. Instead, it was Shane who would go on to glory. It was Shane who would be honoured, while Gabriel languished in defeat. And now it was Shane who was going to be his tag team partner.
The world has thrown yet another wrench into his life. How was he supposed to partner with Shane? Shane is a sinner. Shane is cocky and outspoken and brash. Shane is everything that Gabriel knows is wrong. And yet he is supposed to partner with this man? How would that work? Besides, why would Kyle Shane want to be Gabriel's partner at all? Kyle Shane has had incredible success in his career. Gabriel has disappointed everyone who believed in him. Gabriel has even disappointed the beautiful and forgiving Lord. Shane was a success. Shane was a champion. Personality aside, Shane was everything that Gabriel had hoped to be. Kyle Shane set goals for himself and he actually accomplished them.
“No,” said the voice inside his head. “Envy is a sin. Envy is ugly. Envy is wrong. Your soul cannot be poisoned by such smut.”
Though, deep down, Gabriel wondered why someone as blasphemous as Kyle Shane was allowed to succeed. Shouldn’t he be punished by the Lord? Shouldn’t he be struck down?
“Do not concern yourself with such issues,” Gabriel said to himself. “The Lord works in mysterious ways. It is not your place to understand. Your role is to follow.”
“Besides, if you are looking for an example of sinners prospering, and sinners who need to be punished, you only need to look across the ring at your opponents.”
Nathan Saniti and Whitey Ford. These men held the two most prestigious championships in Pure Class Wrestling. These two men are the pinnacle of what it means to be a wrestler in 2017. And look at them. Look at their depravity. Look at their wickedness. A twisted magician and a rowdy substance abuser. They are what is wrong with the world. They are what must be destroyed. They are what the Lord has spoken out against time and time again.
Gabriel needed to stop them. Somehow, some way, he needed to defeat these two disgusting souls. He needed to show the world that their sort of evil is not accepted in our society. They laugh at the values of the Lord. They mock everything that is good and holy. They respect the dark arts and take pleasure out of altering their mental states with disgusting chemicals and dastardly liquids. They are wrong. And they must be destroyed.
And maybe, just maybe, if Gabriel is able to do so, the Lord will respect him once again.
“Don’t make this about you,” came the voice inside his head once again. “This is about triumph over evil. This is about hurting those who disrespect all that is right and just. This is about vanquishing sin. This is not about you and your petty, insignificant desires. If you cannot see beyond your own limited scope of experience, no wonder the Lord wants nothing to do with you.”
“Besides, if you need to make this personal in order to be effective, remember that Saniti has hurt your lord and saviour.”
Nathan Saniti and Whitey Ford must be stopped. If it means temporarily allying with Kyle Shane, then so be it. Perhaps, during the course of their partnership, Gabriel can convince Shane to repent and leave the sinful path that he was taken. And maybe, some of Shane’s success might just rub off on Gabriel in the process.
