In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
“She doesn’t care about you. She’s lying to you. She’s using you.”
Gabriel hasn’t slept in days. No matter what he’s tried, it hasn’t worked. As soon as he closes his eyes, her face appears.
“Who does she think she is? What on earth was she doing here? She can’t tell you how to live your life!”
She won’t go away. Kelly Chalmers, having walked out of Rick Majors’ life years ago, now refuses to exit Gabriel’s. Ever since she suddenly arrived at his home unannounced, she has never left his thoughts. How did she even find him? And why did she find him? She certainly doesn’t care about him. She certainly doesn’t feel for him. She certainly doesn’t love him. So she must have come for her own personal gain. Maybe she wanted to spit on the grave of Rick Majors once and for all. Maybe she was jealous that Rick has been reborn as Gabriel and has found success, without her. Maybe she was sent by Satan to throw him off course.
“That sounds exactly like what Satan would do. He would try to play with your emotions. He would try to tempt you with a lost love. That’s what this is. This is temptation. This is a test. But is it from Satan or is it from the Lord?”
Gabriel gets out of bed. It’s pointless to remain there. For yet another evening, sleep is not coming. He stands up and paces around the room. He bows his head, falls to his knees, and begins to pray.
“Oh Lord, please send me a sign. Please send me anything so that I know if this is a test from you or a temptation sent by the Prince of Darkness. Why was she sent here? How do I ensure she never returns? Lord…? Lord…..?”
The Lord hasn’t spoken directly to Gabriel in quite some time. Throughout this battle with insomnia, He has been mysteriously silent. It had led Gabriel to believe that Kelly’s appearance was a test from the Holy Lord and not a temptation sent by Satan. Otherwise the Lord, in His infinite kindness, would have given Gabriel a warning.
“But what does it mean, dear Lord? Why are you testing me?”
After hearing nothing from above, Gabriel stands up again. He shakes his head. He continues pacing. Drugs could make him fall asleep. Or alcohol. But no, those are sinful vices that disrespect the temple that is his body and that spit in the face of the Lord Himself. Gabriel has never touched such filth. Those disgusting habits were commonplace for Rick Majors and they’re a big reason why he was such a failure. Gabriel is different. Gabriel is clean and pious. Gabriel follows the Lord.
He stumbles as he steps forward. The lack of sleep is truly getting to him. His head hurts. His whole body hurts. He’s dizzy. He’s starting to see things. He can’t think straight.
“Snap out of it!” Gabriel screams at himself. He needs to focus.
The final two rounds of the Icemann Invitational Tournament are rapidly approaching. Everything is working out according to plan. Gabriel has defeated two men who have wronged him in the past. Both Tyler Scott and Justin Michaels have been vanquished. However… now he must face…. now he must face the Lord Himself.
Of course, Seromine made short work of High Tide and Darren "Monster" Silvaira. There was never any doubt. Neither of those competitors can hold a candle to the Lord. They should have considered themselves lucky to even be standing in the same ring as the Almighty. Seromine again showed the world exactly how dominant He is and proved His power and His intelligence once again. When it matters most, on the grandest stages, the Lord shines brightest.
And His next opponent is Gabriel.
Deep down, what Gabriel wants to do is concede. He wants to step aside. He wants to ensure that Seromine reaches the tournament final fresh and rested so that he can decimate either Dominator or Grimm. At the end of the night, what Gabriel wants is to stand there and raise Seromine’s arm in victory, once again showing the world exactly how powerful the Lord – and the Lord’s message – truly is.
But Gabriel also knows Seromine and he knows what Seromine wants. Or at least he believes he does. Seromine does not want to be handed victory. If Seromine is going to use this tournament to showcase His message to the world, He does not want it tainted with Gabriel forfeiting the match. Gabriel has caused enough grief for the Lord recently. He cannot screw up again. He does not need to give heathens the opportunity to place an asterix beside Seromine’s historic victory. No, Gabriel must put up a fight. As much as it pains him, he must challenge the Lord. Gabriel truly believes that this is what the Lord wants. After all, He works in mysterious ways. By facing a strong and determined Gabriel, and by defeating him, the Lord will prove to the world exactly how awesome he truly is.
When Seromine handed Gabriel that steel chair and told him to “make things right” and strike Him, it was obvious that Gabriel wouldn’t do it. He couldn't do it. He could not strike the Lord who has given him life. But Gabriel did not hand the chair back right away. He hesitated…. why did he hesitate? Was he… considering it? No. Of course not. No. He would never strike the Lord. He would never dare to attack his saviour. But… what if that is what the Lord truly wanted Gabriel to do? In his infinite wisdom, the Lord could foresee that both He and Gabriel would advance in the tournament. He knew that Gabriel would be forced to fight Him to show the world how strong and talented the Lord truly is. So… perhaps He was giving Gabriel the opportunity to prepare himself for the battle that awaits. Perhaps the chair was supposed to give Gabriel the strength to strike his own saviour so that he could battle him in the ring...
So… when Gabriel didn’t hit Seromine with that chair… had he failed? Again?
Gabriel shook his head angrily.
“NO! This isn’t reasonable! This is the insomnia talking! Or… or it’s HER! She’s gotten into your mind, Gabriel. She’s poisoning your thoughts! Get her out of there! Get her out!!!!!!”
Gabriel now physically hits himself in the side of the head to stop these thoughts from coming.
“She doesn’t care about you. She’s lying to you. She’s using you.”
He forces himself to remember her villainy. He needs to put her dastardly words aside and must focus on the loving message of the Lord. She is sinful and wrong. The Lord is just and kind. Gabriel sits down on the floor, leaning his back against the door. He puts all of his weight on the door, partially because he is exhausted from lack of sleep, but also to just make sure that no one can open it.
“What was she doing here anyway? Why she did come now, when I have such important decisions to make? Did she just want to torture me? Did she want to cause me more agony and anxiety than I already feel? Is that her game!?”
Just days before having to face Seromine – and having to decide whether to battle the Lord or step aside and clear a path – Gabriel’s focus remains split. Kelly Chalmers has taken up residence in his mind and nothing that he does can get her out. As the sleepless nights continue, the mental confusion and overall exhaustion get worse. And her hold over him becomes more powerful. This cannot continue.
"Focus, Gabriel, focus!"
At Living a Legacy, Dominator and Grimm will fall. They will meet their reckoning and they will feel the power of the Lord first hand. They will join the growing list of heathens elimination by righteousness and their destruction will be another sign to the world that the only way to true salvation is to follow His light.
But who will have the glory of driving the stake through Grimm or Dominator’s wretched heart? The Lord Himself should be the one… right? Or should Gabriel? Since being reborn, Gabriel’s goal has been to win as may matches as possible to showcase the good things that happen when you follow the Lord’s teachings. Gabriel has stumbled along the way, but he has found success in this tournament. Doesn’t it seem right that this success continue?
“He doesn’t care about you. He’s lying to you. He’s using you.”
NO! Gabriel bangs the back of his head hard against the door. Again. Again. Again. Blood is starting to drip now. Again. Again. Again.
“GO AWAY! LET ME THINK! LET ME REST! DAMN YOU!!!!!”
Gabriel falls to the floor and starts to cry. Eventually, perhaps due to blood loss or just sheer exhaustion, he falls asleep.
