Gabriel has felt the exact same way since he walked out of the ring following his loss to Grimm.
“I’m a failure.”
He couldn’t shake it. No matter what he did, or how much he tried to distract himself, the feeling persisted.
“I’m a failure.”
Living a Legacy was a nightmare. Gabriel struck his Lord. He attacked his savior. He fought the one who had given him a new life. And he won. Somehow, he won. Of course, he did not pin Seromine. He did not make Him submit. There was no way that was ever going to happen. Seromine is too great. He would have never actually lost to Gabriel. And so, in His infinite kindness, the Great Seromine ended the match before He was forced to seriously injure - or even kill - Gabriel. If Gabriel wasn’t going to go quietly, like he should have, Seromine had no choice. It was either get disqualified or decimate the poor misguided soul who dared to stand up to Him.
Seromine is so inspirational. And Gabriel is such a failure.
And it was even worse than that. Not only had Gabriel failed once more, but now Seromine has moved on. Earlier in the night, Gabriel watched as Seromine led Tyler Scott from the ring following his match with Kyle Shane. Seromine saw the writing on the wall. He knew that there was no way Gabriel was going to beat Grimm, so He moved on to someone who actually has some potential.
Rick Majors’ father left him when he was a baby. His mother didn’t talk about it much, so he didn’t know the exact reasons, but he still grew up without a dad. He had a loving family and he never felt like he was missing anything from his life. And then he met Seromine. When the Lord spoke to him, Rick Majors immediately recognized what he had been missing. Seromine could give him the guidance and direction that he had been lacking his entire life.
Father’s Day was yesterday, and yet the one who resurrected Gabriel and is responsible for his existence here today has cast him aside and moved on to someone else. And Gabriel doesn’t blame Him. In fact, he respects Him for doing everything He can to strengthen Himself and his cause. Gabriel just hasn't done what he's needed to do.
He hasn't helped the Lord show the world how strong and mighty He is. In fact, he's distracted the Lord from His good work and he's made the Lord look foolish for choosing to save such a wretched waste.
All Gabriel had to do was have some sense and recognize that beating Seromine was ridiculous. He should have put up a fight for a while and then submitted when he recognized that Seromine was too good for him. But he didn’t. He kept going. He kept getting up despite the fact that there was no way he could ever actually defeat Seromine, and no way that he could defeat Grimm either. His stupidity caused him to keep going, to keep rising after the Lord had knocked him down.
It is because of Gabriel that Grimm won the Icemann Invitational Tournament. Why did Gabriel try? He’s never been a success. What made him think he could start now?
“I’m a failure.”
Gabriel thought about not even showing up for Trauma. All he would be doing is embarrassing the Lord even more by stumbling down to the ring and being humiliated by Gerard Angelo. But then he realized that he had to show up. He had cost Seromine the tournament. He had disgraced the Lord in front of the world. If he didn’t show up at all, then all of that would have been for nothing.
Gabriel can’t go back in time. He can’t erase what he had done. So now he has to live with it. Now he has to make the best of it. And the only possible way to do that was to compete on Trauma and defeat The Hollywood Hero.
It wouldn’t be easy. Of course it wouldn’t. Nothing in Gabriel’s life was easy. And that isn’t self-pity speaking, it’s reality. Gabriel isn’t talented enough to win based on ability alone. He isn’t strong enough, or smart enough, or fast enough either. The thing that keeps Gabriel anywhere near relevant is his tenacity. This persistence and unwillingness to recognize when he should quit is the same thing that allowed Rick Majors to succeed all of those years ago. It was Rick’s only quality that anyone could possibly consider positive, and it’s the only reason Gabriel is still alive. He’s too dumb to realize when he’s in over his head. So he keeps going. This trait cost Seromine the Icemann Invitational Tournament, but that was in the past now and Gabriel needed to use his only strength for good.
He has no choice now. Now that he has betrayed his Lord, now that he has pushed Him towards another, the only option is to keep going.
Tyler Scott was lucky. He was going to be saved now. He was going to get the opportunity to learn from the Lord and to receive His blessings. And Tyler Scott is smart. He won’t squander the opportunity like Gabriel did. He won’t get confused and scared and lash out at the only person in the world who truly cares about him, as Gabriel had. So Tyler Scott will succeed.
Gabriel? With nothing left to lose and nothing left to gain, the only thing he could think of was to continue. It was either that or die, and death terrified him, especially since the Lord has recognized what a pathetic person he is. Hell fire could wait. So Gabriel was going to show up on Trauma. He was going to fight Gerard Angelo. He was going to give it everything he had. And hopefully the Lord would be watching. Hopefully He would recognize that Gabriel had made yet another mistake. Hopefully He would continue to be as compassionate and forgiving has He has been to date. Hopefully He will recognize that Gabriel is still so lost, so scared, and so helpless, that He will once again reach out to save him.
But Gabriel fully understands if He doesn’t. Gabriel does not deserve saving any longer. Gabriel does not deserve the Lord’s love.
But deep down, he hopes the Lord takes pity on him and welcomes him back to the flock.
Hebrews 10:36
You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.
