None of this was working out. Nothing was going according to plan. Gabriel was supposed to be successful. He had been reborn over a year ago. Things were supposed to be different. They were supposed to change. He was meant to leave the shattered and pathetic life of Rick Majors behind him and move on a new man with new inspiration. But he wasn't working out that way.
Yes, there were some victories. He won the Underground Title and the North American Title. But there were far more losses. They had started piling up. Over and over again the story was the same. And now, even Mr. Plow had beaten him. No… it wasn’t Mr. Plow. That wasn’t the name. What was that name again? Was it Plow King? Either way, Tony Plow shouldn’t have been able to beat him. Gabriel was the surprise opponent. He knew he was going to face. He could prepare. His opponent was left in the dark until the last minute. And he still won. And Gabriel still lost.
It was a disgraceful loss. Hopefully Seromine wasn’t watching, but Gabriel knew He was. The Lord was always watching. Even though He was rightfully likely focused on his newest project, Tyler Scott, He probably still found the time to watch Gabriel humiliate himself on national television. Again. It was sad. Every time Gabriel lost, he made the Lord look bad. He cast doubt on the powers of the Lord. It was shameful.
It ate Gabriel up inside. It brought incredible rage to the surface. And that was why he lashed out. That was why he attacked Gerard Angelo. It wasn’t because of their battle a few weeks ago. Well, it was, sort of, but that wasn’t the primary reason. It was because Gabriel was angry. And, if he was really honest with himself, it was because he was jealous. Gerard Angelo was a success. He walked into PCW not too long ago and he immediately and easily established himself as a relevant player. He was a movie star. He was the kind of guy that women want to be with and men want to be. And some men likely want to be with him as well. It's 2018. No judgment. Gerard Angelo wears expensive suits and he looks great both in them and out of them.
Gabriel is a tired old man who struggles to get out of bed each morning.
And that’s why he attacked Angelo. Not because of some greater cause. Not as part of a strategy. Not even for revenge. But for shallow, petty reasons. Primal reasons. This is what Gabriel has become. It’s sad and disgraceful. If the Lord still believed in him at all, Gabriel was sure that this belief was now gone. And it should be gone.
Gabriel no longer deserved the Lord’s love. He did not even deserve the Lord’s scorn. He deserved to be forgotten. He deserved to spend the rest of his days wandering the earth, ignored by everyone, until he finally collapses and dies, unrecognized and unnoticed.
No.
Gabriel had to snap out of it. He couldn’t keep thinking this way. This was how Rick Majors had thought. This is why he drank and did drugs and sliced his wrists backstage. This is why he almost died on a washroom floor. Gabriel could not go down that path. Even though he wasn’t much, he couldn’t be as helpless as Rick Majors. He had to at least be better than that. So he had to do something. He had to fix this. He had to rebuild his life.
And it would start by defeating Gerard Angelo.
If Gabriel could do that, he could show the Lord that he still has something. He could build up some trust. He could slowly start climbing back into the Lord’s good graces. He could redeem himself and once again show the power of the Lord by demonstrating exactly how great His message is. He could…
Stop. That isn’t how it works.
You don’t design your life. You don’t get to lay it out in advance and let it play. There are ups and downs. There are twists and turns. And nobody knows how it will turn out. Nobody but Him. He sets the path. He creates the course. You are but a follower, along for the ride.
Do not concern yourself with why these things are happening, where you are going, or what is coming up next. Trust in Him. Give yourself over to Him. Let Him take the wheel. Trust the word of the Lord.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
It wasn’t up to Gabriel to make plans. His role was to go out there, do what the Lord expected of him, and await the Lord’s next message or mission. He had already stepped out of line when he attacked Angelo. Continuing to try to forge his own way was only going to lead to more disasters.
However, he had created the mess with Gerard Angelo. And so, Gabriel would have to get out of it himself. But that’s all he would be doing, getting out of it. This wasn’t about making a statement or proving himself. It wasn’t about impressing anyone. It wasn’t about anything other than correcting a mistake before returning to where he should be.
Falls count anywhere? That seems doable.
But once this match is over, Gabriel knew he had to give all of his trust to the Lord. He had stepped away from the Lord's guidance. He had tried to do things his own way. But that way was wrong. It was always wrong. What Gabriel had to do was to walk forward with his head held high, knowing that whatever path the Lord set him on was the right one. That's how he would be redeemed.
Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.
