Gabriel was walking down a dark street, his hands in his pockets and his head down. He walked faster than usual, taking big strides and passing several people and he moved. He was walking very quickly for someone who had no idea where he was going.
The reality was that Gabriel had been walking like this for quite some time. It may have been hours, he wasn’t sure. He hadn’t checked. But it was light out when he started and now the sun had definitely set. He had no destination. He had no purpose. All he knew was that he had to walk. For whatever reason, he was compelled to keep moving. It was much better than sitting still.
There was once a point in his life where he walked so that he could think. Something about the motion, about being alone, helped him focus his mind and concentrate. But that wasn’t the case now. His mind was as far from clear as it could be. His thoughts were jumbled. His brain was racing a million miles an hour in multiple directions. It sped faster than he could walk.
What was going on?
Seromine, his Lord and the physical representation of all that is good, had lost to Kyle Shane, a man who only cares about the finding another trophy to put on his shelf. He had “unlocked” another “achievement” when he defeated the Lord right in the middle of the ring. This was all a game to him. But this is real life. He's dealing with real people, not pixels on a screen. But he doesn't care about that. Kyle Shane lives in an alternate reality where getting a high score is all that matters. His behaviour on Trauma was abhorrent. But somehow he defeated the Lord. At the end of the match, he got to raise his arm in victory. That would never make sense to Gabriel.
But it got worse. Much worse.
As a condition of the match, Kyle Shane was allowed to shave Seromine bald. It was disgraceful and disgusting. How could a weak, small man like Kyle Shane be permitted to disgrace the Lord in that manner? Why was the Lord forced to put up with such humiliation? He is our savior. He is our leader. And yet, for some reason, a pitiful fool was allowed to lay his hands on Him in that manner. How are we ever supposed to reach the light, to achieve salvation, when we allow the Lord to be dishonoured in that manner? The image of the Lord struggling while He was defaced would live in Gabriel’s mind forever.
Right now it felt like a lot of things would live in Gabriel’s mind forever. It felt like nothing would ever leave his mind. The walking wasn’t helping.
Not only did Shane have the audacity to put his hands on the Lord, but he also forced Him to lie in front of the entire world. Seromine is honest and trustworthy and, thus, of course He lived up to His end of the deal. But it was obvious that He lied for the first time ever on Trauma. Kyle Shane is not right. Kyle Shane will never be right. It is shameful that he is allowed to spout such falsehoods on television.
There’s a serious problem with our society today. People don’t believe the truth anymore. They don’t care about reality. They don’t want to know what’s real, they just want to know what makes them happy. They’d rather be comforted than educated. And so they fear someone like Seromine, someone who speaks the truth and who shows the world the right way to live. They do not want to believe that the path to a righteous life involves saying your prayers, respecting the Lord, and listening to and following His words. They would much rather side with a man like Kyle Shane who cares more about Star Wars and Fortnite than truth or morality. They’d rather “unlock achievements” and hit a new high score than sit down and appreciate the word of the Lord.
What kind of world are we living in where virtually killing people is accepted, yet speaking about God is not? We have lost our way. We have lost our way and it is scary.
And that is what people like Kyle Shane take advantage of. That is what he thrives on. He knows how immoral and unethical our society is and he exploits it for his own personal gain.
And that’s why, when Gabriel heard Kyle Shane proudly sinning in front of the entire world, he knew he had to do something. He had wanted to allow Seromine to defeat Shane on His own. He knew that the world had to see it as well. Shane needed to be humiliated by the Lord singlehandedly so that everyone would see how broken and empty he is... but... but that didn’t happen. Somehow, some way, Kyle Shane was victorious. He defeated Seromine. And then he stood in the middle of the ring and gleefully mocked everything Seromine stood for – and everything Gabriel believed.
Gabriel had dedicated his life to spreading the word of Seromine and there was a sinner standing in the ring mocking Him in front of the entire world. Gabriel couldn’t take it any longer.
He took out all of his frustrations with that chair. The laughter, the mockery, the pain, the doubt... crack, crack, crack, crack. With every shot, he felt the pain radiate through Kyle Shane’s body... and it made him smile. It calmed him. It brought him incredible peace. The more Shane suffered, the better Gabriel felt. Crack. Crack. Crack. Crack. Crack. Crack. He wished it could go on forever. It was beautiful.
If Gabriel had died in that moment, his soul would have been at peace. Kyle Shane’s suffering is his salvation.
The gamer may have won the battle on Trauma, but Seromine would win the war. He will take Shane’s precious championship. He will vanquish the sinner and capture his trophy. That title means the world to Kyle Shane. It symbolizes all of the video game achievements that he is so stupidly proud of. And Seromine is going to take it.
Gabriel put his head down and moved forward even faster. His left shoulder collided with another man. Gabriel hadn’t noticed anyone around him in quite some time, but now he is jolted into reality.
“Hey, sorry,” says the other man, offering up a small smile.
Gabriel can feel the blood rushing to his face. This is exactly what’s wrong with the world. No one is ever held accountable for their actions. People live in a world without consequences, without truth, without morality. “Hey, sorry” isn’t going to cut it. Gabriel glares at the man. His face feels incredibly hot.
“… everything okay?” the man stammers.
Gabriel shoves him – hard – with two hands. The man staggers backwards, his movement caused both by the force of the shove and the surprise of the moment.
“WHAT THE HELL!?” the man shouts, confused.
He takes a step towards Gabriel, but Gabriel quickly punches him right in the face. The man stumbles. A few people nearby gasp. Gabriel barely hears them. He’s entirely focused on destroying this sinner. Crack. Again, Gabriel punches the man in the face. Blood flies through the air. Crack. Again. Crack. Crack. Crack. It feels good. The wave of anger that initially overcame Gabriel is replaced by relief. This needed to come out. Someone needed to pay. Someone has to suffer.
Gabriel is about to swing again, but someone grabs his arm. Gabriel spins around, trying to break free. Another person tries to grab him now. Gabriel struggles free. A crowd is forming.
“Yes… we’re on Gerrard, near Yonge,” says a bystander into their phone. “This guy just started punching someone. Send someone soon, he’s out of control.”
The crowd is getting larger. Gabriel shoves his way through them, trying to get his hands on “Hey, sorry” once more. Where is he? Where did that coward go!? THIS ISN’T OVER!
Sirens can be heard in the distance. They snap Gabriel out of his mission. He knows his needs to get out of here. Someone else tries to grab his arm once more, but Gabriel manages to get loose. He runs. He runs as fast as he can. He’s not sure where he’s going, he’s just running. Behind him people continue to yell. The sirens are closer now. Gabriel keeps running. There’s subway station up ahead. He rushes down the steps and disappears underground.
Now he stops. He’s breathing heavily. His right hand is starting to swell up. He leans against a wall to catch his breath.
Who did that guy think he was, anyway? This isn’t a fucking game. This is life. There are consequences. You have to be responsible for your actions. Carelessness is just as evil as sin. And sinners must be punished. They must suffer. They must be shown the error of their ways. No one will be allowed to sin and get away with it. Not any longer. Gabriel has allowed the heathens to continue to exist for far too long. That was a grave mistake. But no more. They will all be punished. They will all suffer. And they will all die.
Starting with Kyle Shane.
