"Good morning, beautiful."
Destiny's eyes had fluttered open seconds before being greated. A smile comes across her face.
"Morning, babe. What time is it?"
"Half past seven."
She smiles.
Today was a special day for the expecting parents. Today is the day they'd find out the gender of their final bundle of joy.
Provided the baby would actually be cooperative.
Destiny takes Seromine by his right hand. He gently brushes back the hair from her face and then gives her a kiss.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
With his free hand, Seromine runs it back and forth across her stomach. Her smile widens. As he does this, Destiny closes her eyes, but still holds his hand.
"That feels good. Would you mind massaging my calves afterwards? They're cramping something fierce."
"So my hands will be glittery?" He teases. "No, of course not. Whatever makes things more comfortable for you, I'm happy to do."
"Hehe. I can feel the baby's little flutters."
It didn't matter what the gender was to them. All they wanted was a healthy baby. It had been long agreed upon that they would undergo the procedures shortly after birth, so girl or boy, this was it. Seromine had been on the receiving end of teasing from his daughters.
They were unified in the thought it would be another girl. Seromine liked to call them the XX gang.
He continued massaging her legs.
"Did the kids get off to school already?"
"Yeah. I chased them out the door. Told them to stay off our lawn. Think I'll make them take turns mowing it when they get home instead."
Destiny giggles.
"Hard to believe Kristen will be graduating this year. Feels like yesterday that you were carrying her."
"Don't remind me." She sighs. "Where did the time go? Our firstborn is now a young woman. I don't think I'm ready for her to be eighteen yet."
"I know I'm not. I don't even like the idea of her flying the coop someday. Well that does it, hun. We got to put our foot down and tell her she's grounded for life!"
Destiny laughs at the idea while she carefully turns over onto her back. Seromine sets the pillow aside and scoots back up to join her.
"Getting old sucks. Damn I wish I had some plutonium right about now..."
Destiny kisses his cheek. "At least we'll grow old together. Besides, I'm still young!"
By young, she meant the two year age gap between them. He found her remark amusing. She did as well. After throwing back the blankets and standing up, she straightens out her nightgown. Then winces over some minor abdominal pain.
"I think the baby also found that funny. Yes they did! Yes they did!" Destiny cooed while making her way to the bathroom.
As morning continued, the excitement level grew. The anatomy scan was scheduled for eleven. Destiny was in the final stages of getting herself ready, having selected a loose fitting, two piece outfit. While brushing her hair, she began sweetly singing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.
Seromine was elsewhere in the home, getting a few things done before the drive. Trauma was on his mind, but not a high priority. The thought of being paired with Grimm would be addressed later. Destiny eventually came out to the living room. She slips a light jacket on and pulls an umbrella out of the closet. The jangle of keys makes its sound known. Seromine smiles warmly at his wife, opening the front door for her.
"Are you ready?"
"Yes, I'm ready."
They were singing "Yes, I'm Ready" by Barbara Mason. A wonderful soul ballad from 1965. As she passes by, Seromine gently caresses her back and then walks out behind her. He locks the front door and then quickly goes over to the passenger side of their car to open it for her. After she's in, he closes that door and comes around to the driver's side.
They depart from home a few minutes later. Destiny sighs with content. She moves her hands slowly up and down her stomach. Seromine does the same with his right at stop lights. As she had done at home, Destiny begins singing lullabies.
Inbetween periods of chatter, the baby would get full details of the world they'd soon see, what the sky looked like at present, where they were going and why, the amount of cars on the road and so on. The drive itself took less than fifteen minutes. Seromine finds a parking spot close by and promptly takes it.
"This is it, babe. If all goes well, we'll know if we're having a Melanie Grace or a Brandon Michael."
"What if we have twins again?"
Destiny playfully nudges him with her elbow. "Quiet, you."
He laughs and takes a deep breath. He leans inward towards her stomach.
"Hi baby. This is dad. We'll be sharing a birth month. We're very, very excited to see you. So if you can hear me, could you please turn in the right direction? Your mother and I would appreciate that, very, very much---"
Destiny smiles.
"We love you and we'll see you soon."
Seromine leans back up. "How was that?"
"It was adorable." She kisses him. "I have a good feeling about this."
The wait wasn't long. They arrived fifteen minutes early. Once brought into the room, Destiny hops up onto the exam table. While the sonographer leans it back, Destiny pulls her shirt up to expose her tummy. Seromine playfully chimes in with a wolf-whistle.
Gel is applied around her abdomen. Talking is kept minimal as the sonographer, an older woman, begins to move the transducer around at different angles. Seromine and Destiny interlace their fingers while images of their very active baby appear. A wave of emotion fills the room. Every so often, Seromine wipes tears away from his wife's face, while trying to contain his own off the charts level of excitement.
"Is this your first?"
"No, our fifth. All girls so far."
"Wow. I'm sure they keep dad on their toes!"
"Oh, most definitely. We have a two teenagers and a pair of nine-year old twins."
"Well I can tell they have loving parents."
The sonographer continues to move the wand around, stopping in intervals to measure the height and weight. The active baby is seen bouncing about and appears to have one of their thumbs in their mouth.
"Baby appears completely healthy and is developing well. Let's see if we can't...get them to reveal what gender they are."
They have their legs crossed, but a moment does come after some persistence. The sonographer captures the image and marks the area. A hug is exchanged between Seromine and Destiny as they receive confirmation.
The baby is a GIRL.
"Do you have a name picked for her already?
"Melanie!" Destiny squeals. "Melanie Grace. Her middle name is taken from his grandma."
"We've always loved the name, Melanie. Strange that we never went with it before, but we're blessed that we can now."
The sonographer responds supportively, but otherwise continues to check on everything else:
The brain's fluid-filled spaces and shape of the cerebellum.
The face to detect the presence of a cleft lip.
The four chambers of the heart.
The spine is checked in the long view and also cross sectioned. This is done to make sure the vertebrae are in alignment and that the skin covers the spine at the back.
With the organs, the sonographer is checking to make sure the bany has two kidneys and bladder function. But their stomach, abdominal wall and diaphragm are also evaluated.
Everything comes back positively. Destiny also has the placenta, umbilical cord and her amniotic fluids checked.
"Since I'm at the halfway point, you can carry her the rest of the way." Destiny teases.
"Sure! I think I have the name and number of a doctor that can do that for us."
The whole process lasts around thirty minutes. The happy parents are given a few quality 4D scans to take with them. They say their goodbyes and are on their way. Destiny will have another prenatal appointment next month, one more the following month, and then things will really get hectic for the third trimester.
After he helps her back into the car, Seromine excuses himself really quick to make a phone call.
She already knows to whom. He remains outside of their car while dialing the number.
"Hi Mom."
"Yeah, we're just getting ready to leave. Everything is perfect. Destiny is doing great. The baby is right on target in her development---what's that?"
He laughs.
"Thank you! We're excited. The girls won't let me forget I'm going to be further outnumbered, but that's alright. It just means I get to protect them even more."
He pauses and resituates himself against the hood of the car. He takes a cursory glance at people coming and going from the facility.
"Yes, I know. Loki must be laughing it up this week. Grimm and I will have to find a way to coexist against that psychotic clown."
"I'm less concerned about Crazy Boy, but he can still be a thorn if we're not careful. Listen --- I can't talk for long, but I have something in mind for Phinehas. Another gift. I'll tell you about it tonight and then go from there."
He smiles.
"I'll let her know. I love you too. Ok Mom, talk then. Bye."
Seromine hangs up and slips his phone into a jacket pocket while getting back into the car.
"Mom sends her love and congratulations. She wanted to know how it went and how you were."
Destiny nods but is otherwise awestruck by the photos. She lays her head on his shoulder.
"Our beautiful baby Melanie. She looks so happy in there."
"She really does, hun. Shall we go shopping?"
Destiny's eyes had fluttered open seconds before being greated. A smile comes across her face.
