They say one thing that separates humans from other species is that we know that one day we’re going to die. Rick Majors isn’t sure if this is true. Some animals must know, right? Animals aren’t stupid. They see that one day mama bunny goes out to look for carrots and never comes back. They must wonder where she went. In fact, they’ve probably seen another bunny get eaten by a fox and maybe they can piece it together. They may start wondering if that’s what happened to their mama. If they don’t get that far, seeing one of their friends turn into dinner must make them realize it’s possible for the same to happen to them. After all, that’s why they run away from foxes, right?
Either way, humans know that we’re going to die one day. Recognizing our mortality allows us to accomplish wonderful things. If we believed we had infinite time on earth, we’d take our sweet time doing everything. Many of the great structures and works of art that humans have created surely would have all gone unfinished if we believed we had eternity to complete them. Understanding time puts a deadline on our work. It focuses us. It forces us to get shit done.
Being aware of death also encourages us to work to defeat it, or at least keep it away. If we didn’t know that we could die, we wouldn’t bother doing medical research to fight cancer and heart disease and various other killers. We wouldn’t eat well and exercise and do all the things we do to extend our lives a tiny bit longer. We respect death and we fear it. We know it’s coming and we try to avoid it.
It is the fact that we know we will die that makes us want to accomplish something that will exist after we’re gone. That’s a big reason why many people have children. They want to leave someone behind who will remember them.
Rick Majors doesn’t have children. Rick Majors has not accomplished anything that people will remember. When Rick Majors dies, he will disappear. No one will think of him, no one will ever say his name again. He will be wiped from history and humankind will go on as if he never existed. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to avoid it. Even though it’s coming, he’s not about to fall down and let it happen.
And this is true even though his time may be coming soon. Rick Majors is old. On the last episode of Trauma he looked across the ring and once again saw Holden Ross on the other side. Holden Ross makes him realize how old he truly is. Rick Majors used to wrestle with his father. Frank Merritt was a fierce and talented individual, but his time is done. Holden Ross himself saw to that. Frank Merritt’s time was Rick Majors’ time. And that time is long gone.
No Limits Champion Wrestling closed in 2009. That was ten years ago. TEN YEARS. Rick Majors was the company’s final champion. But those were not his glory days. He won that final title as a broken man as the promotion staggered through its final moments. No, Rick Majors’ last big victory in the ring was at Slamfest 2007 when he became the organization’s first undisputed champion. That was twelve years ago. Holden Ross was barely a teenager.
When Rick Majors was at his peak, when he was 36 years old and finally achieving a life-long dream, Holden Ross was 14 years old.
The youth inherit the earth. They take what we leave behind and they shape it in their own form, just like we changed what our forefathers created. That’s how it’s supposed to work. This is society working as it should.
Holden Ross destroyed Rick Majors on Trauma. Again. That sick bastard is a hungry fox and Majors is an old and tired bunny. And there’s a good chance he won’t get to die of natural causes. He may not get to pass away peacefully in a room surrounded by his loved ones. He has no loved ones anyway. Instead, there’s a very good chance that he’s going to be mauled by the fox. He could be ripped to shreds. He could be dinner.
Bunnies know how dangerous foxes are. Even if they can’t comprehend death, they know they shouldn’t let the foxes catch them. They don’t want to be ripped apart. They don’t wish to become dinner. So they run.
Maybe Rick Majors should run. Maybe Rick Majors should leave while he can and get a head start. But that might not work. Foxes are fast too, especially young ones. Holden Ross will catch him. Holden Ross will kill him.
However, if bunnies had big teeth and claws, would they choose to stay and fight? Maybe they would. And maybe they’d stand a chance.
If bunnies had steel chairs and baseball bats, maybe they could survive.
That’s what Rick Majors needs to do. Holden Ross is the “King of the Underground.” He’s brutalized opponents of all shapes and sizes. People like Kyle Shane and Elijah Dixon haven’t been seen since he destroyed them. But Rick Majors is right here. Holden Ross has done a number on him. He’s caused a lot of pain and agony. There’s a gash on his forehead right now that will likely leave a permanent scar, a reminder of what Holden Ross can do, but Rick Majors is still here. And Rick Majors is still going to show up for Trauma on Thursday. He’s not Arsen Goodstone or Sicko or Muscles Malone or any of the men that Holden Ross and David Hunter have ruined and driven from PCW. He’s Rick Majors. He’s been in this business for almost 25 years, nearly as long as Holden Ross has been alive. He’s not leaving yet.
Not without a fight. The bunny may not outlast the fox, it may not overpower the fox, it may not even be able to outrun the fox. But it can try. It has to.
What if the bunny set the whole forest on fire? Who would make it out then?
When it comes to survival, when it comes to doing what it takes - what is necessary to live - can you ever really count Rick Majors out? Where is Alexa Black right now? What has become of Seromine? They tried to destroy Rick Majors and not only did he outlast them, but he contributed to their downfall. Not even the mighty Grimm could do it, and he damn well tried. Holden Ross is strong and powerful and incredibly violent. He is a sick and twisted man who has broken those with greater resumes than the one Rick Majors carries. Maybe he’ll be able to break Rick too. Maybe this is the end.
But it won’t be the massacre that many expect. The bunny is will be armed. The bunny will be ready. The bunny doesn’t want to die. Not anymore. Not now. It’s not time yet.
The forest is going to burn.
