If only he had known.
If only he had known ahead of time.
If only he had known ahead of time that RICK MAJORS would be his tag team partner again...
He would have shown up to Trauma to make sure Rick never made it.
But that would require things he didn't have. A modified Delorean. A flux capacitor. Plutonium.
You get the picture.
If that wasn't a big enough kick to the nuts, the other foot taking a turn sure was.
Either way, for one night only, rivals will be forced to team up and try to make it work. If they don't, they'll each be fined $100,000!
Did PCW install Dr. Evil as their temporary President or something?
The amount was far higher in Austin Powers, but still, it was a ridiculous threat. He and his wife previously attacked Loki without any repercussions, so somebody had been installed that had a sense of humor in his place.
"Break out the checkbook."
"Babe, you can't be seriously thinking of..."
The Willards were currently pulled over at the Shandon Rest Area, located off Highway 46 near Paso Robles when the bad news was found out. It was only 19 miles away from there and 35 miles back to the I-5, so the stop was convenient. It had been constructed in the 1970s and until recently, was in dire need of upgrading. It appeared that action took place in 2018. Now everything was clean and beautiful, including plenty of paved parking spots for vehicles and big rigs, fountains with treated water, vending machines and pet trails.
"What other choice do I have? I don't want to team with that son of a bitch. He damn sure doesn't want to team with me. I'd put him in the hospital, except Canada actually takes care of their citizens!"
Destiny hid a half-smile to the quip behind her sun-kissed brown hair. She was trying her best to calm his emotions, a trait that nobody but her was an expert at.
"I understand how you feel about this. Really, I do. But Jason, please listen to me. It's only for ONE night! Just one. After that, you can do whatever you want to him---"
He jumps in with a correction.
"We."
"Well, yeah, we can do whatever we want. But you have to think rationally on this. That's one hundred thousand dollars that can be better used elsewhere. If not for me, think about what the girls may need."
"Would somebody please think of the children!" He chimes in with an exaggerated southern accent.
She wasn't amused. There was a time for fun and games and a time to be serious. This was time for the latter. No matter how much she'd love to joke around with him. He took note of her reaction and nervously cleared his throat.
"You're right, you know?"
"Duh. Of course I am." Her response came with a playful nudge.
The girls were taking in the sights of the location while this was going on. The twins found particular joy in petting dogs that were being walked around. Autumn had received some money to feed to the vending machine and Kristen was off doing some stretches and routine exercises, sore muscles be damned! Melanie was sound asleep in her car seat, tuckered out from the long drive.
"I don't know what's worse. Teaming with him, getting fined if I go after him, or Holden being on the opposite side."
He sighs deeply. "He's one of the few friends I have in the business. I'm happy for his success and hope to see him jump out of the Underground and to the top one day."
The mere mention of the division revs up the motor again.
"Rick Majors can go fuck himself! I don't know what cheap shit he pulled to dethrone Holden, but the fact he has that title sickens me. As a matter of fact, High Tide was robbed! Heck, I'm still waiting for a THANK YOU for leading him to his previous tastes of glory!"
Destiny remained quiet. Her thought process at the moment was to let him vent and get all of the venom out of his system. She may not have to wait long.
"I really wish we had gone to the show now." He says with slight regret.
"We were in the area, my love."
He looks at her. She smiles and pushes his frown upside down. "Don't beat yourself up about it. You're not a psychic after all. If you were, you'd have a hotline by now."
It was her turn to try and kid around. To put out his wildfire before any more acres of mental earth could burn.
"Yeah. One that could pay for that fine and allow me to revive the Psychic Friends Network." He continues. "Then there's Grimm. It's like he's become my shadow ever since---well, let's not talk about that."
Destiny runs her left hand gently over the areas that had previously been damaged. "You healed nicely. Hardly any signs remain."
"The time spent in Labyrinth Grove makes me feel like Wolverine."
The reference was lost on her. "Who?"
"Wolverine. You know, from the X-Men comics?"
"When did you start reading comics?"
"I don't read them. I just know characters and some of their abilities."
"Oh. I see."
"We aren't friends. We may not be enemies per se, but we're definitely not going to be exchanging Christmas cards or ugly Christmas sweaters. Anyway---This match is a clusterfuck wrapped in bullshit. That's all I'm trying to say."
"I don't disagree with that. I just don't want you to do anything to have that fine enforced."
He's about to concede when all of a sudden...
"Hey! I just had an idea!"
"Does it involve buying light bulbs? We're out and the one in the bedroom died this morning."
"You would have to equate having an idea with a lightbulb, wouldn't you?"
She guffaws.
"Wholly unintentional. I promise. I just didn't want to forget is all."
"First sign of age."
Faux shock. "Look who's talking!"
"Yes, that's a movie with John Travolta."
"ANYWAY!" She swiftly interjects. "What was your idea?"
He leaned in to whisper it in her ear. As he does this, she fidgets with the buttons on her blouse, getting hotter and hotter by his words.
Not really. She listened objectively. It really didn't need to be whispered, but nobody would ever label them as being normal. Besides, it was a favorite trait of Nancy and Lydia. After he finishes...
"Maybe."
"Maybe baby?"
She smiles. "Maybe baby."
The family road trip to the world renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium was about to be back on the road, free of any further discussion about teaming with Rick Majors.
Destiny had won a resolution.
If only he had known ahead of time.
If only he had known ahead of time that RICK MAJORS would be his tag team partner again...
