Rick Majors walks up to the podium and soaks in the cheers of the crowd for a moment. He straightens his tie, unbuttons his suit jacket, and smiles.
“MAJORS! MAJORS! MAJORS!”
He smiles wider and points at a “MAJORS 2020” sign being waved by an enthusiastic supporter. The sustained cheering lasts for quite a while before he motions to them to quiet down so he can speak. They oblige, clearly anxious to hear him speak. This is what they came for.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he says, then pauses briefly for another round of cheers. “Thank you for being here tonight. Thank you for your support. Thank you for the love you have given me in every city I’ve been to across this great country. I am honored to be here this evening.”
Another loud cheer.
“Since the beginning of this year, I’ve been travelling up and down the roads, meeting people of all ages from every corner of this nation. I’ve seen firsthand the spirit, the desire, and the ingenuity that exist in small towns, big cities, and everywhere in between. This is a great country. This is a proud country. This is a country of unlimited potential and incredible talent. This is a country that can achieve what was previously thought to be unthinkable. This is a country that deserves the best. This a country that deserves a leader that understands the people of this nation. And, my friends, thanks to your support and encouragement, I am that leader!”
Rick Majors raises one arm in the air. The crowd explodes, waving signs and chanting his name.
“MAJORS! MAJORS! MAJORS!”
“Now folks,” he continues. “there are people who say that we should be afraid They believe that we should shrink away from challenges, lock ourselves in our homes, and live our lives in fear. That is shameful. It isn’t just shameful, it’s disrespectful. It is an insult to each and every one of us who believes that the world can be a better place. They're telling us not to dream, not to work to improve society, not to hope for a fairer and more positive world for our children. I refuse to feel that way. I refuse to run and hide. And I know that none of you want to run and hide either, do you?”
There’s another huge cheer.
“Yes, we have our challenges. Our nation is not perfect, but no nation is. We have what very few nations have and that is the unrelenting drive to better ourselves. That, combined with the incredible skill and strength of the people across this great nation, make it possible for us reach for the stars and work towards a brighter future. And that’s where you come in.”
Another big cheer.
“Over this last year I have spoken to so many of you. I have heard your hopes, your dreams, your goals. I know that you want a better world. I know that you want a stronger nation. I know that you’re not afraid. No, you're you’re excited. You’re ready to go. You’re ready to lead. And I am here to help. I am here for you!”
More cheers.
“Together, we will make this nation even greater than it already is! Together, we will achieve all of our goals and more! Together, we will build this country into a shining example of what is possible when people work hard, when people are kind, when people are inclusive, and when people do not quit! We will never give up! We will never hide! We will never live in fear! We are going to move forward and we’ ae going to take this nation to heights that it has never seen before! We can do it and we will do it!”
The crowd explodes. After a few moments, it calms down for the conclusion of the speech.
“Join me, folks,” he says. “Join me on this journey. I need all of you – each and every one of you – to make this dream that we have into reality. I need your support, I need your ideas, I need your inspiration. I need you to keep showing the dedication, the spirit, and the desire you’ve shown me over the last year. Together we can do this. Together we’re stronger, together we’re smarter, and together we will CHANGE THE WORLD!”
There’s another huge cheer. Majors raises his arms in the air as a ridiculous number of balloons fall from the ceiling. He waves to the adoring crowd as he’s joined by a group of family and friends.
“MAJORS! MAJORS! MAJORS! MAJORS! MAJORS! MAJORS!”
Rick Majors wakes up. He’s in bed. Alone. Of course. He's sweaty. He's anxious. And, despite being in bed and asleep, he's tired.
Imagine having a dream about being loved. Imagine have a dream about being admired. Imagine having a dream where people look to you as the future. How delusional.
Razor Blade is loved. Gerard Angelo is the future. Rick Majors is nothing.
And that won't change no matter what speech you give.
