"There is surely a future hope for you,
and your hope will not be cut off."
and your hope will not be cut off."
He looked down at the PCW Genesis Title sitting on his couch and he thought about how he should be happy right now. He defeated Holden Ross. Finally. He retained the championship. Again. This is arguably the most successful he’s been in the last ten years.
But he still felt like a failure.
It was the final four. It was two against two. Gerard Angelo and David Hunter facing off against Rick Majors and Grimm. This was his chance. Not only was he once again so close to winning the Deadly Rumble, but this was also his opportunity to show that he could hang with the best in PCW. And the other three men in that ring were definitely the best in PCW. While people like Loki, Kyle Shane, Stormm, and Jason Willard focused on personal issues and catering to their own egos, Grimm, David Hunter, and Gerard Angelo did the work. They took care of business. They were who he aspired to be.
And he was now getting to stand alongside them in the ring. A strong showing there would have placed him among the upper echelon of PCW talent.
But that wasn’t all. It was also another chance to be on the same side as Grimm. Everyone in PCW respected Grimm, even if they didn’t like him. But Rick Majors possibly even liked him. Grimm wasn’t friendly, he certainly wasn’t kind, and he definitely wasn’t nice. But he is fair. He is just. He lives by a code. Rick Majors felt like he could count on Grimm. And he wanted Grimm to know that he could count on him as well.
And then…
Angelo dodges a clothesline and comes back with a clothesline of his own, taking Majors down. He then steps back and sizes Majors up as he gets to his feet…
Jerry Andrews: One Hit Wonder!
Meanwhile, Grimm swings at Hunter, who ducks it. He then grabs him and hits a high angle belly-to-back suplex. Angelo grabs Majors and throws him over! Majors catches the top rope and holds on! Another One Hit Wonder!
“RICK MAJORS HAS BEEN ELIMINATED!!!!”
Jerry Andrews: And now there are three!
Ace Anderson: Grimm is in a bad spot right now.
He left Grimm hanging. He left him in a two-on-one disadvantage. So much for proving his worth.
But it was worse than that. Grimm didn’t even need him. He defeated both Gerard Angelo and David Hunter on his own. He won the 2020 Deadly Rumble. On his own. He would soon go on to face Stormm for the championship. On. His. Own.
PCW has a hierarchy. And Rick Majors was never quite good enough to get to that next level. He would always be the “third string title” guy. The Genesis Title was better than nothing, but it wasn’t the North American Title and it certainly wasn’t the World Title. If you wanted to know how little people care about the Genesis Title, think about what happened to its predecessor: the Underground Title. One day they just decided that it was gone and the – poof – it disappeared. And no one cared. Not even the PCW front office cared. They didn’t even ask for the physical belt back. It was on a shelf in Rick Majors’ office right now. He was the only one who wanted it.
Who can say that they won’t do the same with the Genesis Title one day? If the entire Underground can disappear, anything is possible.
In more optimistic times, Rick Majors would think about how this tag team match was a chance to relive the final moments of the Rumble. How it would be a chance to get things right. How he could use the match to improve his standing in the company and show Grimm that he was worthy of respect.
But Rick Majors has failed so many times before that he was hard to be optimistic. Even if they somehow won the match, it would be Grimm’s doing. At best, all Rick Majors could hope for was to tag along for the ride.
This battle against Pandæmonium would be just like all the others. No matter what happened, no matter who won, the feud would continue. David Hunter, Gerard Angelo, and Holden Ross weren’t just strong, they were resilient. And, sure, every time they beat Rick Majors down, he got back up… but he was a little weaker each time. Maybe no one noticed it. Maybe no one else could tell yet. But he could tell. He could feel himself fading. Each time it was a bit tougher to get to his feet.
And it’s not the physical punishment. Lord knows that Rick Majors has endured a lot of physical pain over his career, but that’s not what was slowing him down. He’s gotten used to the pain. He’s come to expect it. A life where he didn’t ache when he walked would seem foreign to him right now. But it was the emotional drain that was getting too much. He couldn’t keep hoping for the best and then suffering setback over setback. It was getting too hard to do.
The Underground disappeared and soon Rick Majors will disappear. It's inevitable.
This isn’t the end of this war. This wouldn’t be the night that Pandæmonium will finally be put to sleep. But it could be the night Rick Majors stayed down.
We’ll see.
