Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?
The best part about New Year’s these days is that Rick Majors doesn’t have any acquaintances, so he doesn’t have to concern himself with forgetting them. Many years ago he did, but not today. Ethan Andrews was one of those acquaintances from long ago. Back in the NLCW, they wrestled together, sometimes on the same side and sometimes facing one another. They weren’t friends. They didn’t hang out after shows or travel the road together or invite each other over for Christmas. But they respected each other. They were friendly with each other.
Ethan Andrews helped train Holden Ross. He’s the one who taught him the pumphandle driver. Ethan and Frank Merritt, Holden’s father, were close friends. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t try to destroy one another inside the ring. They certainly did. They nearly killed each other on numerous occasions.
Just like Rick Majors and Holden Ross. Except they’re not friends. They’re not even really acquaintances. They both passed through Seromine’s cult and that’s what has forever connected them. But it shouldn’t, right? These are two men who both joined up with a psychotic cult leader for completely different reasons. One man is the son of someone who once wrestled with the other man. That’s it. They’re coworkers at best, and yet a bloody and brutal feud has been born. And it is one that will not die.
Sometimes two competitors who have battled it out for years learn to respect each other and that respect turns to friendship. You see it all the time. Two bitter rivals who were once at each other’s throats are now hanging out together, sharing old stories and having a great time. Sometimes brutally brings friendship. Sometimes grief brings us closer. Sometimes pain bonds people together.
That isn’t the case with Rick Majors and Holden Ross. There is no bond. There is only pain. They won’t be sitting together in their twilight years, laughing and joking. They may not even survive that long.
The worst part about New Year’s is that it signals another year passing. It shows how Rick Majors just keeps getting older. The clock keeps ticking. Sand is falling through the hourglass and there’s a lot more sand at the bottom than at the top. His time in wrestling is fading. His time in life is fading. Another year ending puts the focus on that. There won’t be too many more New Year’s celebrations for this man.
For many reasons, the end of 2020 should be a time for Rick Majors to celebrate. It’s been his most successful year in PCW. It’s been his most successful year overall in a long while. He won the Underground Title in January and, except for a couple of months where Jason Willard held that belt, he’s been a champion ever since. Even Willard’s reign can’t really be considered a bad thing, since Rick Majors got to finally vanquish him and take his belt back.
Rick Majors also had success in a series of tag team matches, often partnering with Grimm. Getting along with Grimm and finding success together is something that he never expected. And yet, in 2020, it happened. Yes, this year should be considered a success. The year should be celebrated.
But he’s tired. He’s so, so tired.
Holden Ross has done nearly everything in his power to stop Rick Majors. He’s hit him with chairs and thrown him through tables. He’s broken axe handles over his back. Most recently, he hung him. And, yes, Rick Majors has kept going. But it’s taken something from him. Each time he has to get back up, he’s a little bit slower than before. A small piece of him stays on the floor. There’s a lot less Rick Majors left these days.
Maybe it would be good if Holden Ross won. Even though it would certainly be disappointing, at least it would be closure. At least he could finally rest. Actually, that’s not true. If Holden Ross won the title, Rick Majors would have to try to win it back. Even if he didn’t want to, he’d have to try. There’d be no stopping him. That’s who he is. That’s what he does. He just keeps going, he just keeps slamming himself into brick walls until they finally crack.
To end it, Holden Ross is going to have to kill him.
And it’s a “Hangman’s Horror” match, so that’s certainly possible. It definitely means that Holden Ross is going to try. There’s a good chance that he succeeds. And that’s okay. Because at least then Rick Majors could rest.
The end of the year always reminds Rick Majors of his youth. He distinctly remembers being 16 years old, frantically calling his friends on December 31st, trying to make plans to celebrate the new year. He called everyone he knew. Some of them said they would hang out, but no one made any definite plans. So, in the end, he sat at home and watched fireworks from Times Square with his mother at midnight. It’s not exactly the way a 16 year old wants to celebrate the New Year, but that’s what happened.
Looking back on it now, he’s lucky to have had that time with his mother. They’re not nearly as close anymore. He’s nearing his 50s and she’s well into her 70s. Time is no longer on their side. He doesn’t call her very often these days despite he fact that he knows that one day he won’t be able to. People aren’t around forever. That’s a fact that’s supposed to drive us. Knowing that our loved ones could disappear from this earth tomorrow is supposed to encourage us to hold them close, to tell them that we love them, to not take them for granted. But it doesn’t always work out that way.
We let life’s bullshit stop us. Sometimes we’re “too busy” with work and chores and whatever else it is we do and we don’t take the time to reach out to those who matter. Other times, we let petty nonsense get in our way. Someone makes a comment and we feel hurt or insulted, or we take something the wrong way and get angry, or we let awkwardness stop us from picking up the phone or driving over to their house.
If we do that long enough, people start to disappear. No one is here forever. We try not to think about it. We try to pretend that we will always have the chance to mend a friendship or reunite with a family member. But that isn’t the case. Too often we are left with regrets.
We all know it but we ignore it. It’s too painful for us to process, so we push it out of our minds. But that doesn’t stop it from being true. No one is here forever.
Holden Ross kind of seems like he will be though. He’s a big, tough man who rampages through anything that gets in his way. He is a true force if there ever was one. Seromine pretended to be a god, but Holden Ross acts like one. The whole world is his and he lays out punishment as he sees fit. And Gods don’t die. They are immortal. They continue to affect the world forever. Nothing stops them.
Old Testament God killed people, he turned them into salt, he destroyed entire cities, he punished the nonbelievers in unimaginable ways. If you crossed God, he would make you pay. That’s Holden Ross. But there’s even more to it than it. He’s not just trying to hurt people. Sometimes it seems like he causes pain just because he likes doing it. It’s not even clear if he actually wants the Genesis Title. He may just be looking for another chance to rip someone apart.
Look what he did to Alexa Black recently. She’s one tough person and he absolutely decimated her. When he was done, it looked like she had never even been there. It was like she never existed. And then, that same night, he tried to literally choke the life out of Rick Majors. He can’t be doing this because he wants a championship. There must be more to it.
He just likes hurting people. But why? The most common answers are a tough upbringing or a difficult childhood or some other emotional turmoil, but that doesn’t explain it all. It doesn’t explain why Holden is out there breaking people in half while other people who have had issues in the past are making art or going to teachers’ college. What makes Holden lash out like this? What makes him enjoy dishing out pain? Is it a primal thing? Deep down, do we all want to rip someone’s head off or eat their heart? Are the rest of just fighting these urges all the time while Holden Ross gives into them?
Wrestlers are a messed up breed. You wouldn’t put your body through this kind of constant pain if there wasn’t something wrong with you. But is Rick Majors messed up in the same way that Holden Ross is? Would he enjoy crippling someone too? Sure, Rick fought in the Underground for a long time, but he never enjoyed it. He just survived it. But he won’t be able to win this upcoming match by surviving. He can’t end it by pinfall. No, the only way to win is to hang Holden Ross. He’ll have to choke the life out of him. He’ll have to try to main him. There is no other option. You have to take the life out of your opponent to win. That’s the reality of this match. We all need air to live, and to win this match you have to take that away.
You can’t do something like that reluctantly. You can’t cause that kind of pain with hesitation. You have to want to do it. There has to be a part of you that isn’t just willing to kill, but wanting to kill.
This match is 100% suited to Holden Ross. Rick Majors is a tired old man who doesn’t know if he can do this. Holden Ross is a brutal killer who will stop at nothing. On paper, the victor is easy to call. It doesn’t matter that Rick Majors has defeated Holden Ross in the past. It doesn’t matter that he held the Underground Title several time. Because this match isn’t about wrestling. It’s not about championships. It’s about murder.
People aren’t around forever. You only get to celebrate New Year’s so many times. And then your candle is snuffed out. No one ever knows exactly when it’s going to happen, either. That’s what makes life so precious.
Rick Majors and Holden Ross are going to meet at the Icey Awards. There’s a good chance that only one of them will walk out of the building when the event is completed. But there’s also a good chance that one of them never walks again. Or breathes again. The loser may not see 2021. They may not see Christmas. They may not see or feel anything ever again.
Rick Majors should call his mother. No one lives forever. Not even him.
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?
