LOS GATOS, California (AP) -- It was announced in February 2021 that an 8 episode first season was ordered by Netflix set in the Warcraft video game universe, called The Silver Hand. The show will initially follow Uther the Lightbringer at different points in time, exploring formative events that shaped his character, before merging with those stories of the first five Paladins and the formation of the Order of the Knights of the Silver Hand after the First War.
The show will mostly follow story arcs set outside of those told within Blizzard Entertainment's video games themselves, and has been said to tell about the events that transpired between the second and third Warcraft games. Though, showrunners have specified that some overlap may happen. Writing for the series' began in January 2020, and after months of negotiations with several networks, Netflix finally pulled the trigger on the project.
In March 2021, Netflix announced that Justin Michaels would play Uther the Lightbringer. He was selected from more than 150 actors, and Michaels campaigned heavily for the role, being a long-time fan of Warcraft's video games and lore, despite it not being a regular topic of discussion by the professional wrestling superstar. Principal photography for the first season will begin in May 2021 in several locations in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
