Whether I succeed or fail in meeting the challenge is immaterial – it is the effort and the opportunity that drives me. I truly believe that through effort and I guess to some extent risk, success is waiting around the corner regardless.
However, while champions aren’t afraid of failure, they are truly made when they learn the art of turning failure into success.
Innate talent and skill are certainly important. As is hard work and perseverance.
In addition to that, my recipe for success has always been to understand my limitations and to surround myself with talented and brilliant people that can pick up where I leave off. And, most importantly, to have fun on the journey.
One definition of a champion, as far as I am concerned, is somebody who can empower people’s ideas in order to fuel success.
What is a champion??
This has bewildered some of the greatest minds throughout time. I mean you can never determine what a champion is, or can you?? I cannot say that I most definately can, but I can try. I can simply...try.
Imagine for a moment that you are a champion. You are the best in your town . No, you are the best in your country. How does that make you feel? Good yeah? You are a champion. What are you the champion of? What is your major strength? Are you a good leader? A good strategist. A great tactician. A team builder perhaps. A great listener. Perhaps you have the ability to develop and grow the skills of others. Whatever it is, you have the talent to become a champion. All you need to do is to understand what it is that makes a champion. I am going to to teach you what it means to be a...
...Champion.
In this article we are going to introduce you to a new awareness. We are going to open up your mind to the invisible world of what makes a champion.
Personally, we think there are four major criteria that make a champion. You probably know what they are: Talent, courage, tenacity and mind set. You have each of them but do you use them??
Guess what! You have the talent to become a champion. But first it is a case of identifying what your talent is. It is easy if you have a talent for running, swimming, cycling, football or any sporting talent but we are talking of a talent that is not readily identifiable but can make you into a champion.
Stop for a moment. We want you to take a little time and think about your own talents and qualities. Just let your mind roll back and list all your achievements. All the things never mind how big or small that YOU consider to be an achievement in your life.
Now review your list. Can you see a pattern??
Listen to yourself…… What do you feel is important to you. Be honest.
What are you good at?
What do you like doing?
Are YOU competitive?
Does your pattern and your inside voice show you, you get your kicks from helping others; being useful to society or does money motivate you?
Now you are sure you have talent. Perhaps there is a natural energy about you. A way in which others naturally listen to what you have to say. Perhaps it is an ability to make others follow you. Perhaps you are naturally persistent. You find others naturally do what you suggested. Perhaps you have natural courage. Perhaps it is a talent that is easily recognisable like painting, drawing, playing football or whatever.
Whatever it is you are now able to identify your key core skills, your talents. The skills that you use when you are functioning at your full potential.
But there is a long road between identifying your talents and being a champion. If you want to be a champion you need to harness other talents. Those that have been on idle or haven’t been used at all because you are totally preoccupied with a certain way of living. Those that have, for whatever reason, been pushed into the background and forgotten. In our experience, people often sabotage their own efforts. They are aware they have special skills, abilities and qualities but they keep them turned off most of the time. They go through life only make effort when they want to make effort. Then and only then do they fully utilise their hidden talents. At that time, and that time only, are they at their most alert.
Think for a moment and list your hidden, natural talents that you know exist but are not being fully used.
The point is now you have written down and accepted both your hidden and surface skills, abilities and qualities do you have the courage to use them to reach your full potential.
Do you have the courage to succeed?
Do you have the courage to accept that there is a different life out there for you? A life where you are a champion. A person who lives or wants to live to their full potential.
Do you have the courage to go against the ‘natural’ flow dictated by others? To overcome the dream stealers with their pronouncements of gloom. For example: "you can’t make money out of that". "You are not good enough". "Do you know how many people have tried to make a living doing that?" Etc etc etc. All destined to stop you from fulfilling your potential.
If you want to reach your potential. If you want to succeed. You have to have courage. The courage to focus on your skills, abilities, qualities, talents and stay with them and work out how you can best live a full life rather than one you feel you ought to live in order to keep others happy and make a living.
Now you have identified all your attributes and have the courage to move forward do you have the tenacity to be a champion?.
Do you have the determination to keep going when all appears to be against you?
Can you dig deep and keep focussed on your dream when others are putting you down? Tenacity means the ability to keep focussed on your dream.
To be determined to improve your skills, talent and abilities day in day out.
To Practice. For example: A musician has a talent, skills and abilities but is useless without daily practice. Do you have the tenacity, the determination to practice your skills daily? If you are a writer do you write every day? If you are a salesperson do you practice your product knowledge everyday? Are you totally aware of your competitors product? Are you aware of the most likely questions a potential customer is likely to ask? Do you talk to someone everyday about you product? If you are a web designer do you practice every day? Are you a member of numerous forums to hone your skills?
Whatever your skill is, whatever your talent is, do you practice it every day. Do you constantly search the web and other periodicals for information about your skills and abilities to make you better than everyone else? Or are you satisfied with your level of skill? Are you driven to be a champion or do you accept second, third, fourth….place?
What is your mindset? What are the thoughts that run your life? Are they negative or positive? Do you tell yourself that providing you scrape by all is well? If only I can earn $20,000 dollars a year I will be OK. Or do you tell yourself to use your abilities, skills and qualities to the full each and every day? Whatever motivates you; money, prestige, social conscience, whatever, look at your mindset? Do you have the thoughts of a champion or the thoughts of a competitor?.
So what makes champions? Talent, Courage, Tenacity and Mindset. The ability to constantly make an effort. The ability to work at what you want. The ability to believe in yourself. The ability to keep going when others have thrown in the towel. The ability to realise that you can achieve your dream. The ability to keep focussed. Talent and mental strength. The willingness to keep practicing, keep developing your talent irrespective of what others say. You have the ability. You have the talent. All you have to do is believe in yourself.
What makes a champion? The invisible world of Talent, Courage, Tenacity and Mindset. This is what makes a champion.
That would be a stirring speech wouldn't it?? We all have our own belief what makes a champion, and I am not going to say if this is right, and if this is wrong. You believe what you will. It won't matter. It never will...
Champions are Willing to Learn
One of the most important qualities necessary to success is to be educated, to read about, learn and absorb the things you need to know, even if they are completely new to you.
Champions are Willing to Act
Champions use their newly learned skills, taking concrete steps to improve their performance, so they can take their business to the next level. They know that they must act on what they have learned, even if they haven't perfected it.
Champions are Not Afraid to Fail
Champions are not afraid to fail. They know that failure can be the best teacher. They learn from their mistakes and keep fine-tuning their methods till they succeed. Champions have the courage to fall down and not be discouraged. They pick themselves up and keep trying.
Champions are Willing to Adapt
Darwin got it wrong. Survival is not of the fittest, but of the most adaptable. Children adapt to long-term change with little difficulty. They are willing to accept situations and adapt their behaviour accordingly.
Unfortunately, as we grow older, we become more rigid in our thinking, unwilling to accept that there may be better ways of doing things. In a changing business scene, resistance to change makes us obsolete. We lose out to players who better understand changing trends. Champions adapt themselves and their businesses to the changing environment.
Champions are Willing to Innovate
Children come into this world with no preconceived notions. In their minds there are no limits to what they can do, or how they can do it. Champions apply these very principles to take their businesses to the top. They not only learn from what has been done before. They find ways of doing it more efficiently, more cheaply, more successfully.
What does it mean to be a Champion?? Is it not what each and every one of us strives for?? From the first day that we decided that this was what we wanted to do with our lives, is it not what we envisioned for ourselves?? Is it not that one solitary goal every last one of us has in this business?? Every beating we take, every time we put our bodies and even our lives on the line, is it not that one goal at the end of the day??
What does it really mean to be the Champ?? For one, it means that despite everything and despite who may or may not be around you, you are one step above everyone else. You are the elite. You stand on a plateau not touched by any other man or woman at the same time. You reach a level of greatness. You live a dream. You make it to the promised land.
Throughout time, we as a people have always found new ways to put any one man or woman above everyone else. Take the Battles at the Pantheon, for instance. All the way back in those times, those men and women fought for their lives. It wasn’t just all about respect or self-fulfillment. Throughout it all, they held someone above all others. Their Champions. Take professional sports of today, aside from wrestling. The NFL has their Super Bowl Champions, the MLB their World Series Champions. It’s a major honor to be crowned with such a title. And every last one of us, no matter what we do with our lives, strives to be the best.
It’s in our instincts. We are competitive by nature and crowning a Champion has always been a way to act on those instincts. But what does it mean to us in the world of Professional Wrestling to hold such a title to our name?? I can’t really say what it means, exactly, for any given man or woman on the PCW roster. But, I can say what it means for me.
Well, you get the point don't you?? Do you know what I am getting to?? I hope you do. I know the rest of the world may understand. It don't mean a damn thing if you don't get it or not. Believe me I am not here to impress you or anyone else. I know I am the VERY best in this ring, and that's all that needs to be known. I don't need to hear it from everyone else, and soon I am going to take the final step.
And, I will take the world captive. And, not to kill them, but to prove a point. To prove that I can. And, I do it every single week. Because you all pay attention to not the world, but me. I am the one who gets your attention. And, why do you pay attention??
Well, we already covered that..
A flash of my face can be seen..
"This man has become the chosen one."
Soon a video shot of myself hitting the Moment of Silence is seen.
"Slither said it himself. He is the chosen one. And, this is his time. This we are all sure of."
My grin is shown..
"This cocky bastard has taken PCW by hostage, and is not letting his strangle on it's neck go anytime soon."
SUPERKICK!
"The dreams of many have become shattered in the path of this man. He has dominated the competition, and soon it is all coming to an end."
A laugh..
"He may be the most hated man in PCW, but he has brought this company to it's knees."
A thud..
"He has transformed PCW into what it is today."
DRAGON SUPLEX!
"The Rocket found his release from Sean Hunter, and now he lies in the shadows fearful of this man."
SHATTERED DREAMS!
"As Prophet holds Pegasus mind. This man holds his body."
DAMNATION!
"Slither is to fall like these other three men. Last week he was teamed with this man. This week he is to be crushed by him."
Then a shot of me hitting the Decpitator on each of these men slowly is shown..and, soon a full body shot of myself follows.
"This man is Sean Hunter. And, he is.."
A grin begins to grow across my face.
"...The Chosen One."
I stood up after watching the tape and nodded at them.
"Nicely done. Nicely done indeed."
I stood up walking away from them. I had nothing else to say, and this would be the point where I would go back to the trailer and find my wife. But, I hadn't seen her. And, she didn't compete at Trauma so now I was beginning to worry abit. Sighing I knew what time it was now. As I did enter my trailer I had already gotten my camera set up. Sitting my chair after I pressed the record button I sat down with a wide grin on my face.
"Here we are another week within the ranks of PCW, and this week we find myself stepping into the ring with three fellows. Pegasus. The Rocket. Slither. They are 'high quality' talent."
I then rolled my eyes.
"But, I am not here to talk about their talent, or lack there of. I am going to get straight to the point, and let's begin with The Rocket. You're a douchebag. Yes, I think that is quite enough about that half assed 'legend.'"
A grin began to grow across my face, and in all honestly he didn't deserve even that much air time..
"All I remember from Trauma is being PLANTED with a chair shot, oh, and dominating the competition and my partner of course. Pegasus I am not going to lie to you. You have fallen off. Ever since your match at Deception last month with Slither you have fallen off the wagon. I find that there is no point of you being in this match except for the fact that you are a 'co-champion.' This match comes down to one thing. Sean Hunter vs. Slither. Everyone knows that. Everyone. But, you are in this match nonetheless. And, now the question I pose to you is this. Are you going to rise up. Are you going to become the man everyone expects you to become, or are you going to sit on your fat ass like you have all month and become another useless member of this roster. That's your choice, not mine. I wanted a fight, and it seems you can't deliver it."
Shaking my head in disgust Pegasus made me sick. He was once something good, but now he had turned into a disease that was ruining this company.
"And, then there is Slither. The man who is going to pose the only 'challenge' to myself in this match. You know Slither I saw your promo. I think you really do want to win this match. You want the whole world to notice you, yet at the same time they aren't going to notice you. They aren't pay a goddamn bit of attention because they see no reason to do so. Can you blame?? Can you honestly blame them for not giving a damn?? You said it yourself. I am The Chosen One. Everyone is putting their money on me to win this match, and you know...I don't give a shit if they want me to win this or not. The truth is this...I am winning because I am better. Because, in that ring I am unmatched by ALL in my ability. Not you...not a fucking soul can compete with me. And, if you would excuse me for being so 'arrogant', but I am arrogant not because I can be. Or, because it is some type of 'gimmick.' You see the difference between people like myself, and Divine. Icemann. All those 'arrogant' types is this."
I yawned because I was honestly bored of having to explaining myself to the whole world. I was the best for a reason, and Slither was not to my level.
"I am the best, because I have beaten the best. I have done it all in my 10 years in this industry, and I have never...NEVER needed to prove anything to anyone. I have not needed to do a damn thing, but what I do best. And, that is win. And, that is what my career has been about. Beating other people. Not in a wrestling match, but as a fighter. Because, I am not a wrestler. I am a fighter. And, got those skills when I was competiting in the underground and back yard wrestling circuit of this industry. And, so I am very prideful in what I have done, and what I am capable of. EXCUSE ME! I didn't know have confidence was such a big fucking deal to the whole world. And, yeah...I don't shut my mouth. Because, even though I know it is what you do inside that ring, which I do quite well I might add. I say what I want. When I want. How I want. Not because I want to, but because I need to. Do you think I am going to be like some of this half assed 'competitors' and let MY reputation become damaged because you can't keep YOUR mouth shut?? I will defend myself because I choose to do so. Sure, I know the truth, and everyone who has kept an eye on my career knows the truth, but people like you never seem to be able to ACCEPT the truth."
In the end I found his beliefs to be laughable, and I wouldn't hide that from him. I found that I would beat him, quite easily at that. Not because the world thought so, or because it was 'destiny', but because I would do so. Because, I had EVERY advantage over him, and no one would take this moment from me. No one. That all ran through my head as I had pulled a cigarette. Lighting it up quite quickly, I wanted to get this little session on tape over with..
"You see you still believe you are capable of beating me, yet the whole world tells you differently. Has it not hit you yet?? Have you not come to the realization about how I am the very best in this company, let alone the industry?? You shall never understand Slither. Never. But, that's alright. I suppose even the ignorant need to have their asses handed to them. You make so many predictions. You tell the world so much, but what are you to tell the world when you fail?? What are you going to tell them when you are proven wrong?? What is going to happen when you are left with nothing. Not the title. Not your life. Not your career. NOT A MOTHERFUCKING THING!! You have to begin to question it Slither, don't you?? I mean after all you words will it mean anything?? In your mind it will. In the minds of those who surround you, it does not."
It was time to bring an end to this promo.
"Alright, I'm going to take a guess that you are just down right stupid, and that you meant we would have SCARS not scares from this match. But, I couldn't expect any less ignorance from you I do suppose. You know Slither I am not like all these other bitches. I do not need to hide my words. I will say them bluntly. Not afraid of what you or anyone else thinks. I'm arrogant. NO SHIT! I'm married to Pegasus' ex. NO SHIT! We are the only two who matter in this match. NO SHIT! How about you put out a promo when you have something worth me listening to. Until then...keep your fucking mouth shut. Good night Slither."
And, soon I stopped the feed..
