FADE IN
Int: Inside Anthony's Camaro driving up from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, near base of the Mogollon Rim outside Sedona - Dusk
Anthony turns on his CD player on his Monsoon audio deck. "Night On Bald Mountain," by composer Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky plays. He takes off his sunglasses and stares at a road marker: "Exit 298. Arizona State Route 179 to Sedona." Anthony puts his turn signal on and turns left at the stop sign at the end of the off ramp. He looks at a sign "Sedona, 15 miles."
CUT TO: The parking lot outside OndieTowne USA in Sedona.
I/E: In the parking lot, then in the store - 30 minutes later.
Anthony pulls into the parking lot and walks into OndieTowne USA, a store specializing in leather goods and western wear. The female clerk looks at Anthony.
CLERK
Can I help you, sir?
ANTHONY
(flat)
I need to buy a lady a leather jacket. She's graduating NAU soon.
CLERK
What is this young lady's size?
ANTHONY
Small. She's about 5'5", maybe a buck 110 to a buck 115.
CLERK
Hmm. . .what does she like to wear?
ANTHONY
She's in a sorority!
CLERK
understanding
Oh. . .so, you want something bright and. . .
ANTHONY
(interesting)
I'll take this one.
Anthony looks at a black female leather trench jacket from Pierotucci. The clerk looks at it and takes it off the rack.
EXT: In Anthony's car - Five minutes later
Anthony turns up Arizona state route 89A to Flagstaff. "Moonlight Sonata" by Beethoven.
ANTHONY
(internal thoughts)
What it G-d's name am I supposed to do with this crap that's happening to me? Why did I buy this for her? I haven't bought sh*t for anyone in a long, long time. In a way, it feels validating. In an odd way, it is infuriating. I don't have much keeping my head in this world. I know some call me crazy, even psychotic. Why would she want to be with a fighter? Why is she wasting her time on a drowning man? I'm called insane. I'm not. I just know, deep down, that the fight is personal every time and Anthony Douglas' mission in life is to reclaim the life he lost. Psychologists, Shrinks, counselors, facilitators. . .all these people try to explain me. "Anthony, you must let go of the past and move on." How can a person do that? How can I let go of the one time of my life when I felt human.
Anthony pulls off the road at the Pulliman Airport road. He gets off of his car and stares at the San Francisco Peaks. An odd looking smile crawls across his face.
ANTHONY
(V.O.)
The feeling fits me! I had a feeling deep down that I would have something like this someday. So, I guess the question is, do I want to keep it? I have never been a man to give up something he has without a long fight. Right now, this little girl wants to be with me! What more should I want? I've blown every opportunity I've ever hand.
Anthony puts on his black leather duster.
ANTHONY
(V.O.)
Somehow, there must be a reason for this. I didn't want this. I don't want it, but now, it's all I have. Somewhere, Isabelle is right. I need to let her go. I need to let Mom and Dad go. I just can't do it. I don't know how.
Anthony's cell phone rings.
MELISSA
(on the phone)
Anthony. . .are you coming back up here?
ANTHONY
(flat)
I should be at my place in a half hour.
MELISSA
I have dinner waiting for you.
ANTHONY
That's nice.
MELISSA
I watched you on television.
ANTHONY
And? I lost. I lost again to a man that didn't beat me.
MELISSA
Oh, come on. You're too hard on yourself. You wrestled well. . .you just couldn't stop the three count. My sisters thought you'd win.
ANTHONY
But I didn't win, Melissa. I lost. . .for the second week in a row. In a fight in which I wasn't beaten.
MELISSA
Well, if it's bothering you so much, maybe you can use it as a fire to get off the losing streak.
ANTHONY
I hate anything but one on one!
MELISSA
(laughing)
I wasn't going to share you with my sisters.
ANTHONY
Get your mind out of the gutter.
MELISSA
Look, Anthony. . .don't worry about it. You have another fight coming in a few days. Just come home, rest. Eat. . .spend time with me and take your mind off of it. I mean. I'm almost done! It's finals! I'm almost done and you're coming to commencement!
ANTHONY
I am?
MELISSA
I already have your ticket. You're sitting next to my father.
ANTHONY
I am?
MELISSA
Stop being difficult! I'll see you in a few minutes.
ANTHONY
You know, this is my last weekend up here. I do have to get back to my ranch in Tucson.
MELISSA
Looks like I have a place to crash for the summer!
ANTHONY
What?
*click*
Anthony looks at his cell phone, then gets back in his car.
ANTHONY
(V.O.)
She's right. . .I do have another fight. Against the singer of that obnoxious song "Back At One." Brian. . .the Captain wants you to be the first person beat into conscienceness. Fine! I watched a 357 pound man turn to sh*t and cost me two fights. . .no one is there to cost me a fight. I realized something, son! I realized that people aren't worth much. Jason Willard comes out and whines and bitches about walking away and N2S and what the hell else! I just don't know and I just don't care. Lantlas scores two wins over me by beating that same 357 pound glass jaw! So, Brian. . .what do I have to prove to you? Something comes down from above and now I'm in a fight with you because the Captain orders it. Fine! At Trauma, Brian. . .I'm just looking for a good fight to take out this losing streak, and you just happen to be in the way. I will beat your ass with whatever I find. If the little man in the shirt rings the bell and tells me I lost a fight without being knocked out, I'll beat his ass too! I just don't give a sh*t anymore, Brian. I just flat don't care!
Anthony reaches the Flagstaff city limits.
