“Pleeeease, Em? I want you to meet him!!”
“I don’t know, Pete…he didn’t invite me.”
“He won’t mind. Pleeease?”
Emily smirked at Pete’s puppy face. “….Okay, okay, I’ll say hello.”
“Yesssssssssssssss!” Pete exclaimed, pulling his elbow to his chest, his hand curled in a tiny fist.
They arrived at Pete’s brother’s house, and the young boy could hardly hide his excitement. He wanted to show his brother that he, too, could make friends…and not the imaginary kind. His index finger punched the doorbell again and again.
The curtains were drawn over the windows, and from somewhere within, a dog’s bark could be heard. The two companions waited for five minutes and were just about to leave when suddenly, the click of the locks could be heard and the door swung open.
In the doorway stood a girl about Emily’s age, dressed in nothing but a man’s t-shirt. Her blonde hair was frizzy and tousled, and she chewed her bubble gum noisily. Emily looked at Pete and was about to cover his eyes with her hand, but Pete didn’t seem to notice the half-dressed girl standing in front of him.
“HEY BAAAAAAAABE, YOUR BROTHER’S HERE!!!!” the girl yelled upon seeing the little boy. It was quite obvious that she was annoyed. She looked Emily up and down. “Got yourself a new playmate, Petey?” she cackled, walking back into the house and leaving the door hanging open.
“Sorry,” Pete said, looking at the ground. “That’s his girlfriend. I don’t like her much.”
Emily suddenly didn’t think this was such a good idea. She just had this bad feeling in her stomach. Something wasn’t right.
She could hear footsteps approaching, and a man’s voice shouting at the dog. “Rascal, SHUT UP!!!”
“Here he comes!” Pete whispered with a big grin on his face.
In the door stood…
“….Garvey????”
