You know you need me...
Those are the words that I hear before I open my eyes to find Katelyn shaking my shoulders, trying to wake me. I had dozed off on the hotel bed while watching old Trauma tapings.
“What is it darling?” I ask Katelyn.
“I just saw the card. You are in the main event with Lantlas this week.” this came to me as a surprise. I figured with the promo the bookers made me do on Trauma last Tuesday, they’d wait until Return to Glory before they gave us a match. I sounded like such a broken record, talking about how I wanted the title back, and how I respected Lantlas but I needed the title. A crock of shit, but you gotta say what you gotta say when you’re not your own boss.
“Really? What are they thinking? I figured they’d wait until Return to Glory to make us face each other.”
“That’s the thing. You’re not facing each other. You’re teaming.” this came as more of a surprise. Teaming with Lantlas. A great honor indeed. I’ve been in my share of tag matches, starting out in the tag team division, but never with a partner of Lantlas’ calibre. I’ve teamed with Banks, Hunter, LoKi, Prophet, but none who were possibly better than myself at my craft. This will actually be interesting.
But wait, am I hearing correctly. A tag match...but against who?
“Who is it that we’re going against? Willard and Loco? No...Willard is injured. Showtime and Non Compos Dirtbag?”
“Jackle and Menace.” she replies, stifling a laugh. 2Guys...PCW’s jobbers, basically. They’ve won one match, by an overturned decision because American Nightmare had a brain cramp, albeit his brain isn’t very large.
“Is that a joke?” I ask her. She must be pulling my leg. That would be a good one, that’s for sure.
“Nope, not joking. Ace Anderson & Lantlas, former and current World Champion, vs. 2Guys, a record of one win, and six losses. All coming to the worst of opponents. This will definitely be interesting.” I made a point to know most of the win loss records of the guys in PCW, just in case I’d need to know them for future reference. I seemed to spend a lot of time on the PCW web site anyway, so why not know them? The Webmaster, some Stevenson guy, is pretty good for updates.
“Maybe you should call Lantlas, and see if you guys could meet, to talk strategy.”
“You don’t need a strategy to wrestle 2Guys, love.”
“Well, maybe you could get together, just to be nice.”
“That’s not a bad idea, maybe I will give him a call later. However, right now, I’m going to finish watching these tapes.”
“You’ll bust your eyeballs if you don’t quit watching that TV.”
“That’s a risk I’m willing to take.” I say, as I pull her down onto the bed and begin to kiss her neck. She begins to giggle, and then kisses me back. She lays beside me on the bed, and we watch the tapes together.
Was I hearing the voice again?
~ ~ ~
After Katelyn and I finished watching the Trauma tapes, we played a game of doctor, and then she went out for a walk. I begin to look for my phone.
I find it on the bedside table, and I pick it up. I don’t even know how to reach Lantlas. I wonder what the chances of him being at the arena are. I know they have a pretty good gym there where he might like to train, or maybe he just chills out there. I don’t know much about the guy at all. All I really know about him, is he’s a damn good athlete.
I dial the number for Pure Class Arena, and I wait until somebody picks up. A female voice comes over the other line. “Hello?”
“Hey, uh...this is Ace Anderson. Would Lantlas be in the building by any chance?”
“Yes, Mr. Anderson. Lantlas is in his locker room. Would you like me to patch you through?”
“That’d be just lovely. Thanks a lot.” I wait for a few moments, before I hear a ring. One ring, two rings, three rings, four rings. On the fifth ring, a voice I’ve heard in numerous promos answers.
“Lantlas.”
“Hey, Lantlas? It’s Ace. I noticed that we’re teaming this week.” I say uneasily, not one hundred percent sure about how to go about this.
“Go on.”
Lantlas sure isn’t making this easy. Why doesn’t he just say ‘hey, come over for some crumpets, or elf noodles or something.’ Do those even exist? “Well, uh, my girlfriend suggested that we meet, to talk strategy, although we probably don’t need to...it’s just 2Guys.”
“Yeah... Strategy...”
I let out a chuckle. “Well, that would mostly involve an Exemplifier, an Elvish Tale, maybe a Flame of the West, and then 2Guys wouldn’t want to step into the ring again. Probably wouldn’t even be able to.”
Lantlas pauses, and a muffled high-pitched voice is heard... “You know what Ace, meet me down near guest lodging.”
“Alright, that’s perfect. See you later on.” I reply, curious about who the high-pitched voice came from, and also curious about why Lantlas would be so willing to meet me.
I close my phone, and I push it into the pocket of my track pants. I get up off the bed, and I happen to think back to before Katelyn woke me up. Was I hearing Ace Anderson again? I must be having crazy dreams. There’s no way I’ll let him back in.
I head to the bathroom, take a piss, and wash my hands. I come back out, and sit on the bed until Katelyn returns a few minutes later.
“I’m heading out.” I say to her.
“Where are you going honey?” she asks me, as she gives me a peck on the cheek.
“I’m meeting Lantlas. Just like you suggested.” I give her a smile, and peck her on her cheek.
“Alright, you boys play nice.”
“That’s the only way we know how. Even though, usually when we meet, we end up kicking the snot out of each other. So I guess we don't play nice. But, that won’t happen this time. See you after babe.” I say to her as I stand up, and walk out the door.
I walk out of the hotel, and into the bright sun. I get into my car, and start it up. I drive out of the parking lot and to my meeting with Lantlas. How interesting. A lot of interesting things have been happening. A tag match against 2Guys, Lantlas being named my partner, me hearing voices in my head. Interesting goings-on in the life of a generally uninteresting guy, with the exception of when I get in the ring. A strange turn of events, to say the least.
