"Relax, would you please?"
ANTHONY
Dammit! Why the hell do I need to go through this G-d damn 12 step bullsh*t again?
"Some things need to be done over and over again. Some things need to be re-affirmed."
Yes, I guess so. The idea behind the 12 steps. . .but I've completed my 12 steps. I've done my time in the program. What more can I get being around people like this? I don't need to listen to the bankrupt lives and the bankrupt slogans. Empty platitudes. Sickening, makes me vomit.
ANTHONY
You know I won't drink.
"Yes, I do, but there is a time when you will be weak. You may, and I want to know you'll be safe."
Looking outside my Greenville, South Carolina hotel room, I notice dark clouds to the south. Lightening strikes followed by a loud thunder clap. In the bathroom, the steam from the hot shower humidifies my room.
"You need to stop dwelling on the AA meeting. You have a match tomorrow, Anthony. And I will be watching from the front row as always.
Yes, it's easy for you to watch. You don't get involved with the fight. Look at what I'll be facing, and all you have is a smile on your face. A man who got the beating side of a iron pipe and a latin speaking man who thinks I'm sh*t under his feet. You'll cheer and clap while I'm beating two guys up. . .or you'll wince as the odds that are stacked against me overwhelm me.
"Anthony, I know you're worried about this fight. . ."
ANTHONY
I'm not worried about sh*t! Captain Walker thinks he can use this fight to beat me into line, so f*cking be it! I've fought two men before and. . .
"Will you be quiet for a second? What I mean is. . ."
She pokes her head out of the bathroom. Her long brown hair wetted and down, she shakes her head and smiles at me.
". . .that you have an ally in this match your fight. You have someone who has come out and openly challenged that Non Compose Mentos guy, who whatever his name is."
ANTHONY
Al Laiman?
"He is your old boss. He did see you in action against the CUBA group back in the HHW. He did tell that whatever his name is that he'd fight him anywhere. Why go into your match with the odds against you? See if Al Laiman will partner with you."
I hate tag teams. I hate tag team fights. I've never trusted another living soul before when I fight. . .why should I do this now? Each time I have, my partner lost me the fight. Jason Willard's little bullsh*t brigade cost me two matches. I hated Al Laiman back in the HHW. . .he protected too many people that I wanted to erase. Al Laiman is a worthless sack of sh*t and I shouldn't want anything to do with him.
ANTHONY
You know Al and I have never seen eye to eye.
"In my history classes, allies in war come about mostly due to the idea that "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Maybe you should look into that idea?
I don't want Al Laiman helping me. I've beaten Seth Sinn every time I've fought him. I'll beat Non Compis Mentis. I'll beat G-d himself if Captain Jack puts him in front of me.
ANTHONY
I'll see what I can do.
I turn to watch the storm come in.
I know exactly what's going on here. And it isn't going to work. Captain Jack wants to see my get my ass kicked so NCM can walk away the North American Champion. The son of a bitch wants to keep me down. I've never cared for titles or championships before. Now that I an gunning for one, Captain Jack thinks. . .
"I'm ready.
I turn around. Melissa looks unbelievable. Dressed in a light blue skirt and a white blouse with her hair down, Melissa takes my breath away. I smile a little.
ANTHONY
You look good.
"I told you you'd look like a million bucks in a suit and tie."
I feel like an asshole.
ANTHONY
Thanks.
"Where are we going to dinner?"
ANTHONY
I have a reservation at the 33 Restaurant.
"Sounds nice."
ANTHONY
I hope so. I usually eat at Waffle House here.
Melissa grabs her bag and her umbrella. I put on my parka and turn off the lights.
FADE TO BLACK
OOC: I've been to Greenville before. I had a friend who used to live there. This restaurant is fantastic. Pricey, but worth it. 4 star restaurants. Here is their web address. www.33liberty.com/
