A tower of illusion. I created myself from the scraps of tears you threw away from your childhood. I am not a soldier, but a general of the human race of truth, doubt, manipulation, and anti-righteous. I find you in the that dark place, the one you hide out in public. I cry, laugh, and commit suicide beside you in a dark alley behind your eyelids. I am inside and beside you when you wake. I am what you see on the faces of many, but the actions you see in the faces of few. I slide my hand and touch you when you're alone. I would have you believe I am with you now, cold and silent behind a mask of shadow. I am... Lantlas.
...
Forcing myself to give in, I cannot deny the fact that something is going wrong. It's time to learn from the past, for something may exist there that holds the answers for which I am now searching. The past of mine with Seth Sinn hasn't been one of golden-paved roads and friendly smiles. It is a dark one. The first time we met was his first night in HHW.
October 7th, 2005
Lantlas whips Nash down the rampway and Nash crashes back-first into the ring. Lantlas walks over to his corner. Neo picks up Kri… FINAL ANSWER! Kri bounces off the mat, and crashes right into Nash! The ref counts it as a tag!
PIERRE: Kri crashed into his tag team partner unintentionally, and now Nash is the legal man!
Neo smiles and tags in Lantlas, who happily steps out of the ring and throws Nash in the ring. Suddenly, Seth Sinn comes out from the back and smashes a steel chair over Lantlas’s head!
His debut night, and he was already going after the biggest name at the current moment. A little over a month later, after exchanging attacks on one another, quite possibly the biggest match in HHW history took place. He was quite the arrogant one at that time, repeatedly saying that I didn't have what it takes, that I couldn't break him, and that he would be the most successful and dominant force in the history of HHW. To a certain degree he was. He was only defeated once, but that one time he was defeated... oh yes... it was against me. Perhaps in the haze of Joey Cranston's animosity towards me, there is a level of truth.
After all, all we have to do is look at the facts. Envious of the success I had in HHW, it would be perfectly logical when signing up for a new place of business to get an automatic ticket to the big-time by allying yourself with the most powerful name you know. It was a ticket to success, all right. It took us all of three matches to win the tag team championships, belts that no one has even touched since our acquisition. However, despite his claims that his intentions are for the North American title, I can see behind his mask of cooperation. He yearns to be the best, he wants the same success that he had in HHW, forgetting the only reason he had that belt was because he never faced me for it. I have to face the facts...
That he never has, and never will be, my friend.
"Seeing things in a different light, are we"?
"Things are not always what they seem, eh?"
"Oh, but they are. Just in the midst of trusting these humans, you grow an attachment to them. You want to be like them, you want to feel as they do. When you do that, your resistance goes down, as does your judgment. When things don't go the way you want them to, you blind yourself to make yourself think they are anyway. That is why you never saw the thing with Terry coming, and that is why you wouldn't let yourself see the inevitable with Sinn."
"What is the inevitable?"
"He cares nothing for you. His myths of being the second best are laced in envy, desiring the same spots which you have already taken steps towards achieving. He had a weakness, but in your selfless generosity, you took the one thing that could tear him apart and gave it back to him instead of saving your own brother. Humans would call that heroic. I call it stupid."
"And why is it stupid?"
"Fool, you know damn well that even if he knew it was you who got her back, he wouldn't care. He cares only for himself and his own success. It's been that way since the beginning. Why do you think he attacked you in HHW? It doesn't take a genius human to realize who the most imminent threat is around here. The one quite possibly labeled 'untouchable', and that's you. You have mystique, no one quite understands you, and to be quite frank, their one-dimensional brains couldn't possibly comprehend that kind of knowledge anyway."
"The problem is, no matter what, I have to stick with him."
"And why is that?"
"We are the tag team champions, and I will not blemish my record with a loss just to rid myself of this parasite."
"You have no idea how much you've progressed already. Your Elven side is showing through, you're becoming more dangerous."
"You are not answering my query."
"Just with those last few words, you've become more powerful than you have ever been. The blood of the Eldar is flowing within you, your senses are growing stronger and more aware. Your comprehension of the world around you increases, as does your understanding of reality."
"And what is this reality?"
"That you should've listened to me from the beginning. I told you a long time ago, all these humans desire is success. Greed. Greed is their most deadly sin, because none of them can escape it. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else, and if they have to step on those they supposedly care about to achieve it, they don't think twice about it. They're shallow, insolent beings, and it was only a matter of time before your realization of this occured. Luckily, it happened before he had the chance to betray you at your most vulnerable moment."
"So what do I do now?"
"If you so desire the perfect record you've posted, do what you must. Your fortunes lie much deeper than the mere tag team championships."
"What of Douglas and Willard?"
"They know not what they have encountered. Douglas is bitter, shallowed and angry at your defeat of him. His inability to let things go will lead to his destruction."
"I do not think he will ever be destroyed."
"Why is this?"
"I may be able to defeat him, but he will come back. His one respectable quality might be his inability to let something go."
"It's a fool's mission, and he's too blind with rage to know this."
"No matter what cost, he will lie in the Elven Path with all the rest."
"Yes."
"As will Showtime, who will meet the fate he should've met this past week."
"Yes!"
"And when this trail continues, and I bulldoze my way to the very top of this pyramid once and for all, the names of the fallen shall be etched into the memory of time, and one will stand above them all."
"YES!"
"That is where the Elvish Tale will take this!"
"The blood of the defeated will stain your hands as you decimate them one by one."
"Left in a heap with every other delusioned fool who believed he could take me down."
"And in the epic conclusion, you will remove the championship from the human, thus proving your dominance over these creatures!"
I laugh, and it echoes down throughout the hallway.
...
::There's a knock at the door, and former HHW interviewer Blake Smith walks in.::
Lantlas- Blake, how nice to see you this fine evening.
Blake- Likewise, Lantlas. Hopefully I can leave this time without paranoid accusations?
Lantlas- Fear not, my friend. I know you're of little influence around here.
Blake- Thanks... I think. I have something I need to discuss with you, but before I do so, how are things looking for this week?
Lantlas- Let's see, wrapping my hands around the necks of those who were foolish enough to attack me are instead left in the hands of incompetent humans, most notably the ones of Blade. His concern with his matches is overwhelmed by his inability to accept the fact that he cannot defeat me. In his chances, despite his delusions that he managed some success, he was put down like an animal.
Blake- And you think that's how it will go this week?
Lantlas- Without question. Blade is not the target of Willard's attacks, I am. He is much like someone, a former enemy of mine, just yearning to feed off of the success of others, since he cannot achieve it on his own.
Blake- Who was this?
Lantlas- Irrelevant, the point is, it's futile. Willard has not been around here long enough to observe the destruction I've created. An instrument of destruction, virtually unstoppable, has defeated even the mightiest of superstars here in PCW.
Blake- Heh yeah, even though Ace claims he ended the match out of boredom.
Lantlas- Humans always feel the need to cover up for their own shortcomings. If he was bored with the competition, it would not have been competition, Blake.
Blake- Care to elaborate?
Lantlas- If his dominance really reigned supreme like he believes it did, the match would've been over long before the eighteen minute mark. His game of cat and mouse bombed horrifically, and he was put in the position of knowing full well that he would be defeated. Despite his superior strength to all the other human wrestlers, his resistance would eventually wear down against the One of the Elven Path. He ended the match not out of boredom, but of fear.
Blake- Perhaps in time you will prove this, but now for my question.
Lantlas- Yes?
Blake- My phone has been ringing off the hook with people wondering if Al Laiman is going to make some sort of apperance in PCW.
Lantlas- Rumors do spread like wildfire.
Blake- The pontification that you were somehow in contact with him was verified last week when he spoke directly to one Ace Anderson.
Lantlas- Can't a guy have friends?
Blake- Lantlas, do you not realize the magnitude this would deliver? Al Laiman is one of the most successful wrestlers in history! Name one other who can post a seven-year record of over three hundred wins and a mere eleven defeats?
Lantlas- Come to measure my inadequacy?
Blake- No, Lantlas. I just want to know if he plans on appearing here.
Lantlas- You and the rest of the baby birds will all find out in due time. Now if you'll excuse me, Dr. Freud, our forty-five minutes are up.
::Blake smirks, then gets up to leave.::
Blake- Be careful.
...
I put my arms behind my head and lean back in my chair. I feel a presence in the room... actually near my head. I look up, and see two cold eyes staring back at me. Kieran.
"Care to take a break from taking over the world, my Elven friend?"
I sit back up and turn to face her. "What brings you here," I ask.
"It seems to me that your curiousity has gotten the best of you."
"In what sense?"
"In your constant thirst for more knowledge about one Devon Drake."
Yes, the one I thought I knew better than anyone. In the past few days, I've uncovered quite a bit of surprises. "Go on."
"Lantlas, sometimes when one means to bury their past, someone discovering it can trigger their darkest, most inhuman desires. She yearns to rid herself of the pain, and she does so at the expense of those she has loved. Even you have experienced this."
Wait a minute, Kieran wasn't around in HHW. "How do you know this?"
"You still haven't figured it out, have you?"
"Figured what out?"
"For all the claims that the Elven race are the wisest and fairest of all beings, sometimes I wonder if their heads are also the thickest. Have you not figured out who I am, Lantlas?"
I look into her green eyes. Her facial features reminded me of someone. Her attitude, the fiery burning desire... DEVON!
"Existing only as we are, I am Kieran Evenstar, and I am the Elven side of Devon Drake."
To be continued.
