Of all the things that he had expected her to say, what she really said was nothing near them. He had half expected her to be grateful, and kind of put him into a "knight in shining armor" type of light. It was a stretch, and he really didn't do much, but he did stand up for her, and he thought he was protecting her. No praise came out of her mouth though, no thank-you escaped her lips. She hadn't even asked if he was alright, I mean, he did take a punch to the jaw because of whatever it was that she and that guy were arguing over. Nothing of the sort though.
What have you done?
He didn't know how to react as she stared up at him. Her soft blue eyes searching his face for an answer that he knew nothing about. He held out a hand towards her to help her up as he let his confusion come out in words... well, a word.
What?
She took his hand and was back on her feet. Her eyes still searched his face, hoping that he could explain himself, but in a way she knew it was stupid to do so. He knew nothing about that person, he didn't know anything about the situation they were now in, he didn't know anything about her problems. Even so... she asked him again.
What have you done? I mean, you don't even know what was going on, but you felt you just had to get involved? Why would you do that?
Pegasus opened his mouth... but nothing came to him. He really couldn't understand how he had just stopped her from being injured any further, yet all she could manage to do was question why he did it. He was just trying to do the right thing, and if he had a chance to do it all again, he would do it all the same. It was one thing to wrestle a girl in the ring, but to abuse one outside of the ring, when they wouldn't even fight back... he wouldn't stand for that. That just wouldn't register with her it seemed.
I really didn't even do anything. I just asked him to apoligize was all.
You're right, you did do that. But then you went and threatened him! That isn't helping, that's just creating more problems for me, for you... for us.
The last words she barely whispered out, and Pegasus found himself at a loss for words again. She turned away from him and walked towards another room. Even though Pegasus DID get punched first, and he hadn't defended himself at all, perhaps what he said to the man was a bit much. Melissa disappeared into a room, and it was then that something popped into Pegasus mind, a question of the utmost importance.
Hey Melissa, could you tell me...
He wasn't allowed to finish just yet, as she quickly popped her head out from behind the corner.
No Jonathan, I can't tell you anthing about him. I can't tell you his name, where he lives, who his friends are. Nothing. I don't want you doing anything crazy, so don't even bother asking again.
Pegasus slowly raised his right arm up and scratched the back of his head, letting out a soft chuckle as he did so. A sheepish grin worked it's way onto his face as he finished laughing.
Actually... I was hoping you could tell me where you bathroom was.
A few minutes (and a bathroom break) later, and Melissa was shooing Pegasus out the door. They said their byes, and turned to part ways, but she called out to him before he'd gone far.
Hey! Listen... I... I'm sorry for how I acted, I know you were only trying to help. I just didn't want you to get in trouble, as that guy has some big friends. I want to thank you for that though, it was very sweet.
She leaned towards him and gave him a small kiss upon his cheek, and then went back towards her apartment and disappeared into the door. Pegasus stood still for a few moments, then spun on his heels and went down stairs to exit the building. He unlocked his truck and slid into the driver's seat, and after casting a glance up towards her window, he pulled away from the curb and back into his other life. He was no longer Jonathan for the time being, but he was Pegasus, and he still had a job to do.
