“In My Daughter’s Eyes” by Martina McBride
In my daughter's eyes, I am a hero.
I am strong an' wise,
And I know no fear.
But the truth is plain to see:
She was sent to rescue me,
I see who I wanna be, in my daughter's eyes.
In my daughter's eyes, everyone is equal,
Darkness turns to light,
And the world is at peace.
This miracle God gave to me,
Gives me strength when I am weak.
I find reason to believe, in my daughter's eyes.
An' when she wraps her hand around my finger,
Oh, it puts a smile in my heart.
Everything becomes a little clearer.
I realise what life is all about.
It's hangin' on when your heart has had enough;
It's givin' more when you feel like givin' up.
I've seen the light: it's in my daughter's eyes.
In my daughter's eyes, I can see the future.
A reflection of who I am,
An' what will be.
An' though she'll grow an', some day, leave:
Maybe raise a family,
When I'm gone, I hope you'll see,
How happy she made me,
For I'll be there, in my daughter's eyes.
Well right now my Daughter’s eyes were closed tight as she had just ingested an unknown amount of my prescribed Zepeda medicine. Zepeda (Olanzapine). The medicine is used primarily for Schizophrenics and Bipolar disorders. So of course Willard would be on the pill due to being manic depressive himself. But one way or another, Kristen managed to get into the pills and mistake them for being candy. So currently she was out like a light on the floor, from the sleep effect it gives off. But Willard wasn’t about to take any chances, she could have possibly overdosed on the medicine and therefore called for paramedics to come to the scene and take his baby to the hospital. Jason held his daughter’s head on his lap, running his right hand through her brown hair as if she had taken her last breath. He was distraught and crying, feeling like this whole issue was his fault….and then that turned around as a name came out of his mouth.
”Destiny….”
Before he could get any further with that, paramedics arrived onto the scene as Willard got up with his daughter in his arms. He then paced his way out of the bathroom, heading straight for the living room. Kristen gets placed down on the couch, so that way her father can go get the door. He does just that as two EMT’s come into the house and over to the fallen Kristen. They take a look at her as Jason gets asked some questions. Like, what’s her name, how long had she ingested the medicine and just what was wrong. After checking for a pulse and taking her blood pressure, they tried to get Kristen to respond by saying her name a few times. It was at this point Jason looked almost ready to go into a frenzy, having not forgotten the one person who brought all of this on.
”Destiny…”
That was the one name outside of Kristen that Jason could get out of his mouth at the moment. But he shook his head and went back to his four and a half year old’s side. The EMT’S eventually gave up on trying to get her to respond that way, but at least her heart was still beating. One of the clean cut males then headed outside to go get the gurney to bring inside. Willard spun around to notice this, his body shaking, his mindset wrecked and his little girl on the couch in need of medical assistance. Willard had found out that an overdose of Zepeda generally is not life threatening, but cases have been known to kill people. Anyway, the stretcher gets brought into the house and lowered down so that they can place Kristen upon it. They strap her in and take her out to the ambulance with bystanders from next door on both sides and across the street to see just what was going on at the old Willard household. Jason jumps in for a quick second as he stands to the left side of Kristen.
”You’ll be ok baby. Daddy is right here and will be following you every step of the way. Just hang in there Kristen, you’ll get over this. Know that I Love You…”
And then Jason kissed her lightly and exited the ambulance. The doors get shut and the paramedic whom did so, jumps back on the passenger side as the vehicle is driven off. Willard watches on and then quickly rushes back into the house to get his cell phone and car keys. He does just that, locks up and drives off once getting the car started. Next stop for Jason Willard : Anaheim Medical Memorial Center. The place itself was about five miles away from where Jason lived, so the drive (as if it mattered) was not going to be far. The one thought that raced through Willard’s mind was the mere idea that Kristen would have to have her stomach pumped. It was the most logical, but it most likely would have to be done, to get what she ingested out of her. So as Jason got to a stoplight, he took out his cell phone, sighs and braces himself to make the all dreaded call. He dials the number and puts the phone up to his ear and mouth, while now continuing to drive for the hospital.
”Destiny…no I’m not sorry for earlier, I didn’t call you to apologize. I just called to let you know our daughter was on the way to the hospital. (WHAT?!?!) . Yeah, Kristen somehow got into my Spread and thinking they were candy, decided to swallow some. So now she’s headed for the hospital to most likely have her stomach pumped…..what do you mean I should have been more responsible?? How was I supposed to know that Kristen had the intelligence level of Einstein to go ahead and get daddy her pills…you know, something you never could do. …………..what did you just say Destiny??......Yeah, you care to repeat that bitch???”
Willard nearly gets into a wreck as he does a sharp turn into the parking lot of the hospital. Pulling through, he finds a parking spot, slams on the brakes and turns his car off. The door gets open, with Jason getting out (he didn’t have his seat belt on). His conversation with Destiny far from over as you can blatantly hear her yelling in her husband’s ear, lacing into Jason to let him know that this could have been avoided basically if he was watching Kristen more closely, since she is a very smart girl. But then Destiny said the wrong thing at the wrong time to Jason…one that she was about to regret here in a heartbeat.
”Destiny….those we’re the last words your ever speaking to me. Why? Because it’s over between us. I’m going to file for divorce, but now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go be with MY daughter..As she needs me a hell of a lot more than she does you. Have a nice life with Autumn and your parents Destiny, because while I’m out making money, you’ll be whoring your ass on Ventura’s finest streets with the best of them…give my regards to Evelyn when you see her!!!! Oh and Destiny...be sure toget an abortion!”
CLICK
And just like that the conversation was over. The relationship was over. The marriage was over. The divorce could now begin for a second time. Battle lines had gotten drawn, and sides we’re taken. Destiny was now a stranger to Jason and once Kristen was a better candidate to find out, would be let known in on what her mother had to say about him. But Jason walked into the emergency room, heading straight for the front desk as he returned to the concerned father role. Looking to his left, he could see other families waiting idly by for any information that they could receive on their loved ones.
”Sir, how may I help you??” asked one of the nurses.
Jason’s hands we’re now shaking badly as he couldn’t get his composure for two reasoning’s. The most important one, being the well being of his little girl. So as he begun to place his cell phone away in his jacket pocket, he leaned inward and begun to say just how he could be helped out.
”I was wanting to know what the hell is going on with my daughter back there?! Is she alright, what are they doing to her???”
”What is her name sir and I will be glad to find out for you?”
”Kristen Leigh Willard. They must have just admitted her, because I was behind the ambulance the whole way. I saw them come here. She needs to be taken care of immediately before those pills have any further chance of taking effect on her body……”
Willard puts his hands behind his head, looking more concerned than ever. Keep in mind this was the first time she ever did this, so this was a new situation for both dad and daughter. The nurse checked on the whereabouts of Kristen for Jason as he waited on. He looked around at the other people in the ER, as they looked to be in cases far off worse than what he was going through. Was Jason a bad father? No not at all. His pills where high enough to where Kristen couldn’t get to them standing up (she came up to just a little past her dad’s waistline). So she must have climbed up onto the counter to grab them, pop them open (they could have already been open) and then decide that they were candy that made her dad feel better. Maybe it’s possible that Kristen was feeling bad about something herself……
”Sir, she has been admitted and will be in the process of getting her stomach pumped. If you could just please have a seat, we’ll call you when she’s been placed into a room. Ok? You don’t have anything to fear sir; this isn’t the first case of accidental overdose that we’ve encountered with children.”
Jason stared a blank, cold hole through the nurse as he was told to have a seat. He wanted to be back with hi daughter in the emergency room that she was in. He wanted to see the process of stomach pumping. To see a tube go down the throat of his little girl, so the contents of her tiny stomach could be exhumed. There were so many questions he had about the procedure, but alas would be denied his opportunity to see first hand, someone get their stomach pumped. What Jason would love to forget (and hence the questions), is that he’s been down this road a couple of times himself for trying to do the same thing Kristen did. Except his was on purpose and he knew what he was doing.
So Jason had a seat in the waiting room, but sat on the edge as he waited word on how Kristen was doing after the procedure was complete. It seemed like days as Jason sat by, watching ridiculously made cartoons on the television. Was his world unraveling around him? Kristen ingested something she wasn’t supposed to have. His marriage to Destiny looked to be over once again. He was separated in any fashion from Autumn. His retirement was upcoming here soon. Oh yeah, seemed like everything was going just the way that Jason Willard had hoped for. Tears came down his cheeks, wiping them away, he placed his head down in his hands and sighed. Between the fingers, you can hear the sounds of a prayer to god to make sure that his little girl makes it through ok.
Two Hours Later
Jason was still up and now pacing around. He looked to be getting more and more concerned/frustrated by the moment. What would HIS family say about this? How would AN feel once he caught wind? Yeah, he was a monster to everyone, but to Jason…he was a friend. A long time friend. Would this speed retirement plans up? There would be no match against The Byrd Willard decided. He needed to be with Kristen as long as it called for (which was every day). Being a dad was more of full time job than being a wrestler was and Kristen was more important to Jason than anyone else in the world. But alas the doctor came out, found Jason and let him know that the stomach pumping procedure was a success, that Kristen did just fine and was resting in one of the rooms on the floor. Jason laughed a joyous laugh, shook the doc’s hand and got led to the room that yielded his daughter. He walked around the curtain, looked down at her as she rested comfortably. Before the doctor left, he asked Willard a few questions. They all got answered truthfully and then it was announced Kristen would be held overnight for observation.
Eventually Kristen awoke, looked around and spotted her father immediately.
”DADDY!” she said with keen signs of a sore throat. Which quickly had the four year old confused to why her throat would be hurting her for reasons to far advanced for her mind to comprehend.
Jason smiled and leaned in for a hug that Kristen held her arms out for. He hugged her tight, but not so tight that she could get crushed in his god given strength. Kristen let go and moved her hair out of the way, before rubbing across her esophagus. Willard pulled a seat close to the bed, where Kristen still looked happy, but tired at the same time. Even though she had just woken up. Her next remarks tossed Jason for a loop, but did make him realize something about their relationship.
”Daddy….I don’t love Mommy anymore. She left us. She hurt you and she hurted me. But I love my da da!”
Jason smiled and nodded, letting his daughter know that he loved her as well. More than the entire world and his own life.. Kristen looked ready to throw a fit at the mere mentioning of the word mommy however. Jason had to calm her down and let her know that Destiny wasn’t there and most likely wouldn’t be coming. Kristen fluxuated between happiness, sadness, love, hate and then anger throughout that night. Jason was confused to where certain emotional outlets were coming from, but understood that this all stemmed from Destiny. Nearly five year old Kristen had taken pills she wasn’t supposed to…and blamed her mom for every bit of it happening. But later that night, around the one am mark, Kristen woke up from a nightmare, panting, sweating and calling for her father. Jason snapped out of his chair having fallen asleep himself…
”At Trauma Byrd!...”
Willard snapping out of his daze, quickly got to his daughter without any hesitation
”What’s wrong baby doll??? Daddy’s here, it’s alright Kristen, I haven’t gone anywhere.”
Kristen clung onto her dad, crying ever so gently against her dad’s chest as she rubbed her back with his right hand. Kristen had her eyes closed as she cried, but did manage to answer her father’s question.
”I had a ni…a nightmare…Grandpa touched me Daddy….and I didn’t like it…”
