“Emily, Emily, Emily…what have you gotten yourself into?”
Jade opened her eyes to the familiar, mocking voice and her heartbeat quickened in fear.
“Where am I?”
“Oh, nowhere. Just a little hiding place where we could talk.”
Her sight adjusted to the darkness and she glanced around, surveying the room and calculating escape. She knew her wrists and ankles were bound, but the rope was thin this time. There he sat, her villain in the corner on a stool, watching her. Jade’s fear disappeared and she grew angry. “There is nothing to talk about! We’re through, I already told you. And aren’t you supposed to be in jail for assault?”
“Yes, that little run-in with your fiancée was quite the adventure,” he hissed angrily. “Things didn’t go according to plan. Unfortunately for you, I was bailed out.”
“By whom? You don’t have any friends,” Jade spat. “You never did.”
The shadow in the corner hopped down from the stool and made its way to her side. “Well, that’s not true, Emily. You and I were very good friends once. Have you forgotten?”
She could feel his breath on her neck, and Jade squirmed against the bonds, aching to kick him where she knew it would hurt the most. It was no use; the ropes were too tight, and the more she struggled, the more they dug into her skin. She stopped moving. The voice laughed dryly in her ear.
“So much spirit. That’s what turns me on about you, Emily. You’re just like a wild animal that needs to be…broken and tamed.” He bit into her shoulder, pressing up against her hard.
Jade clenched her teeth, fighting the urge to cry out in pain and anger. “You said you wanted to talk,” she blurted, reminding him.
He backed away, smiling cruelly. “Well well, right down to business, then? Are you sure you wouldn’t like to play a bit first? All work and no play certainly makes for a dull reunion.” His fingers traced a line along her jaw, and Jade turned her head away in disgust. “I see,” he replied. “No matter; I’ll have my way with you later. Now, about this whole marriage thing…”
“How do you know about that?”
“It’s all over the papers, my dear. And I couldn’t help but notice your engagement ring…Mr. Elven Warrior has fine taste, in both women and in jewelry.”
Jade felt in the dark for the ring on her finger; it was still there, along with her mother’s ring.
“Surprised? Come now, Emily, you know me better than that. I would never steal such a divine symbol of…true love,” he said in a mocking tone. “Of course not. I want you to keep it, so that every day you are with me, you will remember the mistakes you have made.”
“Mistakes? You’re my only mistake,” she retorted angrily.
His closed fist sailed hard across her cheekbone and mouth, causing her to bite her tongue so hard that it bled. The impact made her left eye feel like it was going to explode, and Jade fought to remain conscious and strong, just like in the ring, even though she could not fight back now.
“You worthless slut! I am ten times the man your precious Lantlas will ever be, and you know it! Where is he now? Where are your parents and your grandmother? You are alone, Emily DuPrae, and there’s no one to save you this time. Tonight I’ll release you and you’ll go fight your stupid little match at Trauma against Anthony Douglas. No one will suspect that your life is in danger. But it is, and I’ll be back. You’ll learn to love me. And Elf-boy? He’s too busy protecting his little princess and watching you grow older while he stays young, just because he has some crazy fetish about human girls and wants to get laid by whoever’s willing to stay with him. He doesn’t give a shit about you. One of these days you’ll see, Emily…you’ll see. I’m all you’ve got now, and you know it. Nobody else loves you like I do.”
He kissed her forcefully on her mouth, placing a small pocket knife in one of her hands. Then he stood up, wiped away Jade’s blood from his lips, and walked out into the night, purposely leaving the door wide open.
Jade stood for a few moments, shocked and tied up in the dark, before she realized that she was free to go. She cut through the ropes with the knife he had given her, and stumbled toward the door, half-convinced it was all just a bad dream and any second now she’d wake up in the strong arms of the one she loved, safe and sound. But the pain was too real to be imagined…
The young woman made her way down a dark, unfamiliar alley which brought her to Main Street. Recognizing where she was, Jade began to run, and she didn’t stop till she got to Lantlas’ door. She sneaked quietly to the bathroom sink, where she washed the blood from her mouth. Then she slipped into bed, trying not to wake him. But Lantlas was a light sleeper and rolled over immediately.
“Where were you?” he whispered, kissing her softly. “I was worried.”
She wanted to tell him, but it didn’t seem right. How could she drag him into her past if she wanted him to be a part of her future? She was afraid he’d get tired of saving her and leave her for someone who wasn’t being chased all the time. After all, just by being with him, she posed a threat to his life, and his daughter’s. She was putting them in danger. He’d just try to save her, and get himself killed, and Jade couldn’t bear the thought of that.
“Just out for a midnight walk.”
Lantlas laughed quietly. “Why am I not surprised?” He took up her hand, and his lips grazed the inside of her arm, where her skin always felt like silk. Jade shivered and closed her eyes, trying to forget what had just happened.
“I love you.”
