[The media moguls of PCW had set up this press conference for him. He wasn’t pleased to be there, he wasn’t even pleased to leave his own home that morning because of what he expected to be waiting. That morning he had awoken with a fresh mind and a skip in his step after the revelations of the past week. He had been given the closest thing he could get to his dreams and he had been riding the wave of euphoria and adrenaline since. The air smelt cleaner, his sheets softer, even his food tasted sweeter and more wholesome than before, all because of the events before that day.
However, it was all a very different situation now. The lights blinded him even though they were over seven meters away at their closest. The incessant flashing that happened ten times a second and prevented him from seeing any of his would-be interrogators and also kept him from focusing on his notes that had been prepared earlier. He had never been one for crowds and sweated profusely when placed directly in front of an audience as their one point of focus. When he was in the ring it was another matter altogether, he was competing and all of his attentions were on the other people in the ring. Now, however, he was on his own and being forced to answer to the crowds on his own, in his own voice instead of with his fists.
The seat he was hunched in was deeply uncomfortable, the sort of cheap seat they used for these arrangements because it was only for half an hour or so. They had spent all the money on the hastily arranged set and the quick coming together of some of the foremost wrestling journalists in the world. This was a big event in the history of PCW, it was something that had been inevitable for a long time and now it had happened the media was primed to take full advantage. They never though about making it a comfortable environment for the subject, the seat was beginning to annoy him more and more but all he could do was sit and bear it or else he would make an ass of himself and destroy everything in front of the world’s cameras.]
OK, now we will open to the floor for questions
Good lord, the words that I didn’t want hear. This is the time where they all go nuts, trying to be the first to ask the most obvious question they can.
[The crowd of over excited journalists becomes rabid with anticipation of who will be chosen to ask the first question. The masses begin to swell as they rise to their feet and lift their arms to signify their intention to ask the question, hoping they get picked first so they don’t have to think of another question. They all stare at the Master of Ceremonies as he scours them, looking for one that deserves the privilege of asking he question.
Gradually, he opens up and points down to the front row at a young journalist. He looks innocent and fresh, not suited to this environment but obviously with the ambition to be a top sports writer. Nervously, he looks around trying to see if the MC was pointing at somebody else but comes to the realization that he was indeed pointing at him. Beginning to sweat with anxiousness, he opens his mouth as the over sized, long arm microphone emerges above him.]
Erm, How does it feel to finally be given, erm, another World Title shot?
[Non Compos Mentis continues to sit uneasily in the seat but his views of the journalists seem to have changed with this new one sat in front of him. He looks into the eyes of the you upstart and sees that, in this world where people will cut you down if you don’t have a reputation, its would be better to give him a good answer than to shrug him off.]
Well, as you can expect, I was pleased that my efforts in PCW had finally been recognized by Skylar Marshall. I think I should have got my chance a lot sooner than I did but now that I have it isn’t much of an annoyance.
Isnt that much of an annoyance. Yeah right. It annoys me more than ever that Skylar didn’t even bother to consider me before now. All he did was watch me continue to hold my North American championship and see me beat opponent after opponent, then reject me for the World Title. The Prophet, Marcus Murdoch got a shot before me even though he had been away from PCW for months. The same about Sean Hunter, months away from the spotlight and then emerging and getting his shot for doing nothing. Ace Anderson used up more than his fair share of rematches when he lost it. He was given constant chances to win back the title because he was good for business, not because he was the best man for the job.
Next question please
[Once again the crowd erupts with action as the journalists stop writing on pads and laptops to throw their hands into the air for the second question. Once again the MC takes his time to look around the group and select the interrogator carefully. Gradually, Non Compos Mentis begins to sweat again, knowing full well that the next choice will not be as gracious as the last one. He would not get an easy question twice in a row and he would have to think of a fresh response on the spot.
Sure enough the MC points down to the crowd and utters the words that no wrestler wishes to hear, Dave Prazak. One of the most revered and feared writers in Wrestling was sat jus a few seat back from the first man. This man was the major contributor to the PWI rankings, the lists of the best wrestlers and tag teams from the past year and of all time. This man knew what he was talking about and never asked an easy question.]
How do you feel about having to give up your North American Championship for your shot at the World Title and stop your run as the longest reigning champion in PCW’s history?
[Mentis was annoyed, not only had Prazak asked a question that was intentionally probing he had stuck another two questions on the end of just to make his squirm. The two men were focused on each other in a staring contest where Mentis was trying to gauge the kind of answer that his questioner wanted and Prazak was trying to create an erratic reaction from his subject.]
Well Dave, giving up the North American championship wasn’t an easy thing to do. After all, I had held it for around eight months and I grew quite attached to it. I’ve been through a lot with that title around my waist and it is one of the main factors in me getting this shot. I mean, I have been through so may matches with it, the four way match two months ago, me, Kaden Keene, James Keenen and Seth Sinn. The Title vs Title ladder match against Seth Sinn. Even the title match against Anthony Douglas, ok that’s a bad example. But as you have seen, I have faced so many people for that title and it is odd not to have it around my waist.
As for losing my title run, I see it no as losing something but as a transition between giving that up and breaking my own record again with the World Title instead. I know it will be hard, I know that I will have to face challenges I have never faced before, but I also know that I will not give up and I will triumph over my opponents.
How do I feel about giving up my title run? I feel pissed off that Skylar Marshall made me choose between handing over my North American title for a World title shot and keeping my unbeaten run as champion. I am pissed off that Skylar didn’t see what is really good for business, PCW’s first Co- North American and World Champion. Think about it, the most dominant figure in all of wrestling, stood in PCW.
The only plus point is that I get my shot at the World title. And yet even then I have very little control over who else is in the match, I have no control over the stipulations, I have no control of what matches I am put in before that mach. I have nothing but a shot at this point. My point is proved this week on Trauma. I face Nina Arcadia, a woman who was annihilated two weeks ago by Gravdigger, a woman who has done nothing in PCW since her return. Yes, she is a former World Champion and that may be the only reason I am facing her, but is this really any way to showcase your number one contender. Definitely not. No way. This match will be a walkover where all I have to do is lift a finger and I will have won. I have all the skill in the world to show and I am placed in a match where I will not be tested in the slightest way.
[The MC once again begins to scour the amassed crowd for questions, looking for someone who sticks out. He takes his time, knowing that this will probably be the last question of the session. H spends a few moments looking but loses patience and points aimlessly towards the front row where a seemingly average person with no defining features and absolutely nothing exciting about him stands and focuses on the former North American Champion.]
What are your feelings about Grimm and Skylar Marshall?
[Mentis stirred in his seat like he was enraged by the question but tried quickly to compose himself. His face begins to turn red with anger at the very though of the two subjects of the question and the fact that he is trying hard to keep his thoughts inside.]
My thoughts about both of them? Ok, Let me think about this.
[Mentis scours his mind trying to find suitable things to say about the two men but comes up with nothing but anger and negativity. Still, he tries hard to find another alternative to say but still finds nothing of importance and gives up.]
To hell with it.
You know what I think? I think that Skylar Marshall is one of the stupidest bastards on the planet. I mean who leaves me out of the main event for this damn long after I am the longest reigning champion I PCW’s history. Its just common sense that I should be up against people lie Grimm, Lantlas and Ace Anderson. Instead I had to face people like Anthony Douglas, Atlas and Seth Sinn. Now he finally sees that I am ‘good for business’ and that I deserve to be in the World Title picture. Well let me ask him something, what was different before. You just gave in to the inevitable.
And Grimm? What I have to say about him is that he is a fake and a fraud. You heard me. He beat a man who had no will left to wrestle and was going to retire at the end of that match, win or lose. He beat a man that was waiting to be beaten. He is riding on the coat tails of the worst champion this company has ever had and has not faced any challenge worth thinking about yet. At Mass Destruction Grimm faces me in a match where he will be exposed as the fraud and the thief he is, stealing the championship that should be mine from a man that was not fit to hold it in the first place. At Mass Destruction, I will hold that World Title for the first time, and I will hold it for a lot longer than that.
[The flashes from the crowd erupt as Mentis stands up out of his seat and storms out of the press conference, leaving the reporters shocked by his reaction to the question and quickly jotting down everything they had heard. Confused and unorganized, the MC calls a halt to the event and scrambles behind the set to escape the jeers and boos of the number of fans in amongst the audience.]
