“No, it can’t be true,” Emily stated calmly, sure that her parents were misinformed. “That’s ridiculous. Guy would never hurt anybody. I know him.”“
"Your mother heard some rumors at work about Guy…”
“So? They’re just rumors, Dad! Aren’t you always telling me not to believe everything I hear?”
"Emily, you’re not listening,” her father said firmly. “Your mother heard some rumors about Guy that made her uneasy, so I decided to look into it, just to show her that there was nothing to be afraid of.”
“And now you think he hurt somebody? You think he will hurt me? He wouldn’t do that!” Emily insisted, slightly raising her voice.
Her father handed her a copy of an old newspaper, put his arm around his crying wife, and led her out of the room. “I’ll let you decide, Emily,” he said as they walked away, leaving her there. “But I’m still your father and I’m still going to keep you safe.”
Emily waited till they had gone upstairs before replying indignantly under her breath. “I don’t need you to keep me safe.”
Her attention shifted to the old newspaper in her hand:
Boy, 15, Charged with Rape

HARTLAND, Maine - 15-year-old Guy M. Dawson has been charged with sexually assaulting a young girl, police said.
The charges were filed on a Monday afternoon after police conducted an investigation into an alleged incident that took place on March 17.
Police Chief Don Cedar said the 15-year-old has been charged with gross sexual assault, which is the Maine legal term for rape. While Cedar would not release the age of the alleged victim to protect her privacy, he said she was around half the age of the charged juvenile.
Both the alleged victim and the accused teen are from Hartland.
Cedar said police first became aware of the alleged incident when they were called by a parent of the victim. He would not release any specific information about the alleged assault because it is still under investigation.
The charged juvenile was not arrested in the traditional sense, said Cedar, but came into the station with his family. They were all very cooperative, he said.
The teen was released to his parents and must follow a number of restrictions, including a 7 p.m. curfew and submission to random searches and tests for drugs and alcohol use. The teen will also have to report to a juvenile corrections officer as directed. As with most sexual assault cases, he cannot have contact with the alleged victim.
The accused juvenile is scheduled to appear in York District Court on June 26 for arraignment. Cedar said the court proceedings will likely be closed.
Asked whether the juvenile could be charged as an adult, Cedar said the York County District Attorney could possibly pursue that, "but I don’t see us going down that road."
Emily stood there staring at the three-year old newspaper, her hand shaking slightly. Most of her mind didn’t believe what was right before her eyes. They’ve got the wrong Guy, she thought confidently. But the article was disturbing. What if it was the truth? She knew she’d have to confront Guy about it and find out for herself. “They’re wrong,” she whispered to herself. “I’ll prove it.”
