“Help! We need some help in here!” Gabriel screamed.
He stood there helpless, holding his little sister in his arms as she violently seized. More than helpless, he was scared. Terrified, really. Thirty seconds ago she’d been fine. She had been awake and alert and most importantly she’d been talking. Real honest to god words, her first words since she’d told Gabriel she loved him two weeks ago.
“God dammit, we need help!” Gabriel screamed again.
She’d suddenly gone quiet. Gabriel had just assumed she was lost in thought or tired. He was still entertaining those notions when her eyes rolled back into her head and she began to jerk uncontrollably. Cross tried to remember what to do for a seizure. Were you supposed to turn them on their side? Lift their feet? He knew you were supposed to do something but he just couldn’t remember. He cradled her head as she thrashed in the bed, her complexion beginning to turn an unhealthy shade of blue. So he’d done the only thing he could think of. Gabriel Cross screamed for help.
Seven Months Ago:
“Him? You’re sure?” James Keenan asked looking down at the two men in the ring.
“I’m sure. He’s perfect,” Gabriel said quietly.
“He’s good, there’s no denying that. But why him, what makes him special?” Keenan asked with genuine curiosity.
Sitting next to his mentor in a private box, Gabriel Cross looked down at Andy D and MONROE squaring off in the ring. He was quiet for a moment longer as the two men continued their struggle. Finally MONROE locked Andy into a vicious looking submission. Andy struggled valiantly but finally the referee was forced to call for the bell. Even still MONROE hung on like a mad dog, ripping and tearing at his victim.
Finally the referee managed to pull MONROE away. Andy was writhing on the ground. As the referee went to check on him, he found himself blocked by MONROE. The two argued briefly before the referee left to retrieve the title. Handing the title to the victor, he again tried to check on Andy. And once again found himself blocked. Finally MONROE got everything he wanted and left the ring, the North American Championship dragging limply behind him.
“That’s what makes him special. Everything he did tonight wasn’t for any championship. The belt was just a byproduct of it. What MONROE did tonight is send a message to everyone watching,” Cross all but whispered excitedly, “Here I am, come and get me. I’m unbreakable. It’s the perfect challenge, James.”
James Keenan watched as MONROE left the stage, “Okay, I’ll make the call.”
Present Day:
“Gabriel, you’ve got to get out of the way,” the nurse moved in with aggravating calmness.
Gabriel wanted to round on her, wanted to shout at her. He didn’t. She was just trying to do her job and dealing with a pissed off family member would just make it that much harder. So instead of getting in her face he just got out of her way.
As the nurse led Gabriel to the side he heard something that made his heart crash through the floor.
“She’s not breathing.”
Gabriel wanted to rush back in there. All big brothers were supposed to come with the power to make everything better, right? Right? But reality, the cruel mistress that she is, hadn’t seen fit to gift Gabriel Cross with super powers. So despite every fiber of his being screaming in protest, he stayed out of the way.
Dr. Evans rushed in, nearly knocking Gabriel over, “Situation?”
One of the nurses, the one not currently checking his sister’s airways for obstructions, responded, “Grand Mal seizure. She’s not breathing, Doctor.”
“And there’s nothing obstructing her airways, she’s just not getting any air,” the other nurse chimed in.
“We’re going to have to intubate,” Dr. Evans stated.
Gabriel was surprised when they opened the drawer next to his sister’s bed and pulled out everything they’d need. They opened the sterile tools and began to work. Gabriel couldn’t stand to watch as the hose snaked down into his sister’s mouth.
Dr. Evans and her team worked furiously. Finally the pump on one of the machines began to work, bringing sweet, life-giving oxygen to the girl’s lungs. It was only when her chest began to rise and fall did Gabriel realize that he’d been holding his own breath.
“Get her down to the lab,” Dr. Evans commanded.
She turned towards Cross, “Gabriel, we’re going to take Elizabeth down to the lab to run some tests. Nothing she’s taking or any of the treatments should have caused something like this.”
Two Months Ago:
Gabriel Cross sat in the crowd at Collision Course. The sheep were on their feet, baying as loudly as they could. Cross was not on his feet. He wasn’t part of the herd. Instead he sat biding his time.
The match playing out in front of him was brutal. MONROE and Kaijin Shinryu traded blows inside the ring before Kaijin began to get the upper hand. With a swift kick to the midsection, the powerful one had his opponent set up for the Shinryu Bomb, well, almost had him. MONROE was able to wriggle out. He found no respite against the ropes as a powerful clothesline from Shinryu sent them both over the rope.
Neither men moved at first, and with the count just starting there was nothing to do but wait. Finally Kaijin Shinryu managed to pull himself to his feet using the barrier. He stopped to catch his breath, leaning against the barrier while MONROE tried to get back to his feet.
This was it, the perfect moment. Cross stood up amidst the baying sheep and sprinted towards barrier. Good planning or maybe just good luck favored him as PCW security left a gap for him to exploit. Coming up on Shinryu, he pivoted and lashed out with a vicious Kenka kick, snapping the North American challenger's head forward. The camera swung over, catching Shinryu’s slow fall, but more importantly catching Cross’s contemptuous smirk.
Present Day:
Gabriel sat with his head in his hands as he tried to shut out the world. It was working too. Colors were muted and sound had been reduced to an annoying buzz.
“Gabriel, did you hear me?”
The world came rushing back in like the tide. The colors were suddenly overbearingly bright and sound, formerly a dull buzz, threatened to explode his skull with its clarity.
“Gabriel?”
Cross looked up at Dr. Evans, “you’re absolutely sure?”
“I’m afraid so, Gabriel,” she said with the tenderness of a loving grandmother, ”the cancer has metastasized to her brain.”
“How long?” Gabriel asked. It was difficult as his throat constricted with raw emotion.
She shook her head, “weeks, maybe two months on the outside.”
She continued to talk but Gabriel could no longer hear her. The raw emotion that had constricted his throat was no longer there. It was now flowing freely from his eyes.
