I voted #2, but when doing number 2 I'd probably do #1 as well.

We already know about the past, I can find out all I want from history books, documentaries etc. Plus we're already at the forefront of technology and living standards, what would I have to gain by travelling back to a less advanced time where travel took maaaany times longer than it does now and dinner is anything I can get out of the forest... which would be nothing The future though? Sure there's a chance I'd come out in a nuclear apocalypse, but there are so many things that we have yet to discover and I'd like to see the world that discovers them more then a world without the discoveries we already have.

I'd only use it once to go into the future... to find out winning lottery numbers for a large jackpot, come back, and enjoy my life of retirement.
My luck, if I tried to go to the past, I'd butterfly effect the shit out of the present, and really screw everything up. Though, it WOULD be fun to go back and see how accurate some of the "history" on certain things really is. I'm not just talking early 1900s either.

I pick "plan on never using the ability so to enjoy the present?"
Simple reason what if you change something in the past by accident if you went back to the past, it would mess up the present, and if you went to the future what if you saw something you didn't like.

I voted #2, but when doing number 2 I'd probably do #1 as well. I've heard it's common to number 1 when you have to number 2.

I picked "Explore the past." I'm especially interested in ancient cultures like the Greeks, Mayans, Egyptians, and Romans. But who am I kidding? I can't even afford to leave Missouri, much less other countries or their past.

That brings up an interesting point. What kind of time travel device are we talking about?
Is this more: the Delorean from Back to the Future, A stationary Time Machine like The Time Machine (H.G. Wells) or The Wings of Time from Chrono Trigger (which is more of a flying spaceship sort of thing).

The device is not important. Just know that you can only use it one time. To go to the future and, for your sake, hopefully back to the present or to the past and hopefully back to the present.
Which reminds me of the book, Something Upstairs by AVI. Random aside over.

See I think it does matter. If I had a stationary Time machine that would transport me in my current location (NYC) I would definitely go forward in time. I go backwards far enough I'm just on a forest island.
Though if I have the Wings of Time I'd be able to travel anywhere in the world which would lure me back in time to see some of the great ancient cultures.

Mikey brings up an interesting point. Travel far enough back in a stationary time machine, and then you are pretty screwed as far as travel is concerned from that point.
From my standpoint, however, it doesn't really matter, as I'm only traveling a week or so into the future at any given time to grab winning lotto numbers and coming straight back.

I would not be able to trust myself to travel to the past for fear of trying to give events a nudge one way or another to turn out more favorably, either for myself in particular, or the world in general. If I were to have access to time travel, I would surely travel forward, bringing myself that horizon of the unknown.
