Things should have been different. You know that, right?
Phinehas and William Dillinger, better known as Grimm and Sadistic, would engage in mortal combat at Mass Destruction 2 inside the Cage of Death. It was a brotherly feud so bitter and brutal that Luis Malave gave serious consideration to calling off the bout for fear that someone might actually die during the match. Oh, if he'd only known...
You know how some people are born destined for greatness? Leonardo da Vinci, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Teresa, Jesus Christ, and the list goes on. These are people that have made grand contributions to history and left a lasting imprint on human civilization. From the second they were born, they knew they were meant to change the world...
As the gruesome ordeal neared its merciful finish, Grimm and Sadistic traded epic blows like two bearded titans bathed in each others' blood. And on this particular occasion, it would be Grimm who would emerge victorious after Harvesting his brother not once...not twice...but thrice! Beaten and battered, Phinehas would be returning to Hangtown – alone – with the International Championship. But the golden belt wasn't all that was on the line.
Ever heard of the phrase “on borrowed time?” It's when your life expectancy runs long on its allotted amount. And it's absolutely real. Some people claim it's by miracle. Or perhaps by accident? But we know that neither of those are true. You don't accidentally make it three more years. Come on...you really think you fall into six more months? No, no, no. When it's time to meet your maker, he comes for you. To take your soul. Probably he collects some bounty. And probably the greater the soul, the greater the bounty. Unless you're able to cut a deal, that is...
Things should have been different.
You know how some people are born destined for greatness? Well, they never really tell you which side of the coin you'll fall on. Probably, you'd like to know that before you dive in head first to change the world. Adolf Hitler, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler...they were all destined for greatness, too. These are people that have made grand contributions to history and left a lasting imprint on human civilization. These were not half-ass commitments. People will remember forever all of their wonderful little shit. Excuse me if I sound bitter.
When William Ian Dillinger finally came to, he found himself trapped inside of a pitch black, airtight casket. Blood flowed from every orifice...even some knew ones that Phinehas had opened upon his head and face. The throbbing in his head was tenacious.
I am Grimm's broken heart. Things should have been different.
As Sadistic regained his wherewithal, he tried to piece together the happenings of the past few minutes. Or had it been hours? He couldn't be sure. Figuring out where he was also seemed like a good idea. Feeling above him, Sadistic discovered the casket lid and it opened with a little force. The elder Dillinger pulled his bloody corpse from the container, but only to find the man in black...waiting. Time and location effectively became void. The man's porcelain skin shone in the moonlight. Not a thread out of place. Not a speck of dust to be seen. The heavy breeze plowed through Billy's coagulating hair, but seemed to pass straight through the man in black. The man's thin lips curled into a death rictus. It was a smile that did not reach his eyes.
After awhile, you'll realize that what you don't understand you can make mean anything. You know how they say that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder?” Yeah, well so is greatness. Napoleon Bonaparte was Mahatma Gandhi was Genghis Khan was Sir Isaac Newton if you really wanna split hairs. And as fate would have it, William Ian Dillinger would be throwing his name into the hat of such fine company.
Remember that blurb about borrowed time? How it works is one might borrow time if one has equity to barter with. William's equity was to barter his own soul in exchange for his brother's. He'd promised the man in black, the dealer of souls, that in exchange for his own freedom he would deliver the soul of Phinehas Dillinger. And he'd failed. Miserably. He'd been reduced to a butchered slab of flesh slouched before the ethereal bounty hunter.
“I can do it...” sputtered a beaten Sadistic.
“Oh, I'm afraid you cannot, Mr. Dillinger,” he hissed with dry delight. “And you will not.”
“No.”
“You've tried and failed. Since you did not uphold your end of the agreement, it is time that you come with me...”
Another funny thing they don't tell you about that whole greatness coin flip is that when you land on the bad side...well, you're not necessarily guaranteed a one-way ticket to the afterlife. Sure, if you're one of those goody two shoes world changers, probably you go to Heaven. But Hell wasn't necessarily Earth's landfill used for storing all of the rapists, murders, and other sinful rubbish. Don't get me wrong. Bad people go to Hell. But even the fiery depths have limits. Chemical terrorists and pedophiles, sure. But Adolf Hitler, Billy Sadistic, and Ivan the Terrible...well, Hell doesn't accept people THAT disturbing. We're left in the dark. So all of you drug users, adulterers, and abortionists can rejoice in the comfort that at least you'll have somewhere to spend your eternity. Again, excuse me if I sound bitter.
The man in black's bounty had backfired. Much like Genghis Khan...much like Charles Manson in exactly 1,214 days, Billy Sadistic's soul would remain in stasis. Never to breath fresh air again. Never to see another sunrise or sunset. Not unless somebody came willing to barter...
...and then Perfection and Ruth showed up.
I am Grimm's complete lack of surprise.
Things should have been different. You know that, right?
There's no time like the present to make up for the past. Once you've trekked down the path of destruction, is it too late to atone for your sins? Is there such thing as an ethical mulligan? Let's hope so, for William's sake.
In exchange for his soul, Sadistic was returned at Living a Legacy VI to join Phinehas Grimm and Michael Wryght. To return order to Pure Class Wrestling. To return order to humanity.
We all die. The goal isn't to live forever. The goal is to create something that will.
